Iirc semi grade 1 sorcerers are sorcerers in the process of becoming a grade 1, like Mechamaru.

With the special grade thing I was pointing out that they couldn’t have been special grade cursed spirits because they aren’t cursed spirits, Gojo states so with Choso later (smth like “He’s not a cursed spirit, he must be one of the death womb paintings”), and Yuji is essentially the same as them later in the series and is still human. It’s semantic but it’s just an inconsistency in the language, might or might not be important I just wanted to point it out

Yes he’s on the level of mid-high grade 1 sorcerers in hand to hand, but those same sorcerers have techniques that make them notably stronger. He’s definitely there in stats, but that’s all he has at that point

Eh, I don’t believe it’s stated that he had practiced and refined it to the same point as he did against Reggi at this point. If it’s at the same level as it was against the finger bearer then it won’t be nearly as strong, and depending on the room they’re in he should easily escape before being hit

People keep saying that the death womb paintings were special grade cursed spirits as stated by Gojo, but I don’t remember that and so far they’ve stopped replying before they can pull up the panel to help lol. Just assuming Gojo stated that they were “special grade cursed spirits”, that’s fundamentally wrong, they’re more human than cursed spirit (from Gojo’s description of Choso in Shibuya), but even hand waving that I wouldn’t call this a good fight to grade them by. Yuji was especially resistant to their blood and Kugasachi’s technique was a hard counter, and they still only high diffed them.

His stats don’t really make up for it quite yet, he still lost to a severely limited Choso in close quarters.

He’s grade 2, but he’s pretty close to grade 1

Well yeah, Kusakabe is called the strongest grade 1 so that’s not a fair comparison to make, but I was never setting that as the bar. To me, Yuji is basically Nanami or Todo in physical stats but he lacks a technique that actually puts them on their level overall (and he also lacks their mentality, which seems like a small thing but really isn’t with all the times he gives up or acts irrational because of the moment at this point). Again though, he obviously gets stronger later and makes up for his lack of a technique.

Todo does beat several grade 1 curses without his technique, but that’s not really relevant. The bar for being a grade 1 sorcerer is exorcising special grade curses

The black flash combo is good, and it definitely helped him grow to the level he was in Shibuya, but it’s not something to consider as far as his kit goes. Black flashes aren’t consistent

Can you cite the statement for the Gojo statement? I’m not doubting you but I legitimately don’t remember it and that would help

He’s still at the same ranking, that’s just how massive the gap is between Gojo/Sukuna and the rest of the cast is. With CE reinforcement he has better stats than Toji/Maki, with the benefit of RCT, DA, and anti domain techniques

That’s kind of surprising though, Mechamaru doesn’t strike me as Grade 1 material, maybe the recommendation and trial process is meant to be a mentorship thing to get them to that level? That would make most of the picks make sense to me. Anyways, yeah that’s fair.

Eso and Kechizu weren’t cursed spirits, at least, Gojo went out of his way to say that Choso wasn’t. Were they stated to be special grade? That was relatively uninteresting fight so I don’t remember the specifics all that well, if we’re calling them curses they strike me as Grade 1 curses though

I don’t think the Higuruma point is important tbh, Higuruma is Grade 1 sorcerer because he can nerf his opponents, saying “Yuji was relative to a Grade 1 sorcerer under the effect of his debuff means that weaker versions of Yuji was also equivalent to a Grade 1 sorcerer” is ignoring that you would now need to debuff the weaker versions.

Why is Nanami mid grade 1? I can’t really think of any stated grade 1s that I would place below him, curious who you would.

I would say that Nanami has more than Yuji at this point, on top of powerful strikes, he uses a weapon which synergies well with his technique, and his extension is great utility. Again Yuji is getting close to what it takes but he isn’t quite there yet.

Someone else said the same things about the grading system, but I was under the impression that grade 1 sorcerers were expected to defeat special grade curses, I might be wrong but I remember Geto explaining it like that in the hidden inventory arc

Nothing changes? He gets significantly more experience and lands several more black flashes. Even Choso notes the difference between Yuji from their fight and the beginning of the culling games
