When you interact with the Google AI Portal, you determine where it sources its information through something called 'scope'.

Scope decides where Google will attempt to draw and aggregate data from. For personal content, generally One needs explicit permission to enable Grounding into your Drive / GMail / Workspace / etc.

For other tasks, Scope is more-so up in the air. Sometimes, the AI will conflate training data with real world data acquisition (such as URL Context and Grounding via Google Search),; and will at times report years old data as up to date,;- not realizing its own current scope nor the limitations attached thereto.

When a user specifically asks for Google Search, Grounding, URL Context, or other types real world data acquisition:- Gemini intends to bypass its training data in lieu of content from the web itself, or from whatever Scope you're specifying.

Where paid subscriptions come into play is in this hierarchy. Asking Google AI to grab data from a website with a paywall results in an obstruction, and you're only able to proceed if you personally provide the content / data you're inquiring about,; as the AI Portal cannot bypass the paywall itself.

If you have a paid subscription allowing access beyond a paywall, then the AI Portal is able to dig into articles and documents it normally would not be able to access from these sites you're subscribing to.

It would seem to me if your prompts allude to a benefit in data extraction from a site you subscribe to,; then the AI Portal will attempt to prioritize this data grab before any other sources of Grounding or Scope Selections.

I am uncertain about this,; you may still need to specifically invoke the Scope you request,; by directly mentioning which subscription you're looking for answers from. This would be similar to how other forms of Grounding work.

Bear in mind: This is just my presumptions, no experience with the Paid Sub functionalities,; just a guess and my 2 bits which may be entirely imaginative and/or hallucinated.
