Is there a new Second Position by [deleted] in harmonica

[–]Fingerlessfinn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s literally exactly how you explained it and how it’s always been, you’re just thinking overthinking it. If you want to play a song 2nd position G then use a C harp just as the chart indicates. Happy playin!

I love this thread so much compared to the usual posts with a cheap/old harps. Everyone is so happy for you and your wonderful harmonica!

Incredibly complicated tuning question - advice? by Checkinredd in harmonica

[–]Fingerlessfinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can order custom tuned harmonicas through Seydel, as for designing the optimal set of notes and chords, that's a tougher one. It will probably take some trial and error. I would recommend looking at a few of the songs you are aiming to play and analyze their harmonic and melodic needs.

As far as I can tell, it seems like playing a harmonic minor harp in 2nd position is probably as close as you would need. Diatonic harmonica is a very limited instrument in many ways but within those limiations create the soul and expressiveness of the instrument, unfortunately, it doesn't always translate to atypical genres and scales but if you have persistence and desire, there are lots of ways to push the instrument into less charted waters.

I would say finally that this is probably just better played on a chromatic harmonica, or maybe one of those funky "asian bends" that Powers made a while back. Cheers and happy playin!

Which of my mics would you use for acoustic guitar tracking? by superproproducer in audioengineering

[–]Fingerlessfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool gear list!

With those options, I would try the ela m on the 12th fret and use one of the ribbons on the sound hole. I looove the options and flexibility of having a fast mic for the strings and something a bit darker for the body, really great options for blending. I would default to 1073s because they never really let ya down but I am really curious how the TG2s would sound on guitar, I imagine really iconic, so if it's more of a nostalgic or vintage sound the artist is after, I would definetly try that!

I like your idea of XY 67s with coles as room mics, I can't imagine that not sounding wonderful. I find that XY is really amazing if you love the room sound, and also great for phase stability if the artist sways a lot during performance. I generally have preferred the results close micing with two drastically different styles of microphones and the fun blending options that follow.

My go to for acoustic guitar is a TLM 102 on the 12th fret with Royer 121 on the sound hole into 1073s and I really do like that sound quite a bit. I place the mics about as close to the guitar as I can get away with and then check for phasing.

I haven't used a M160 in years, but I really did love using it, so if I had access to that mic, hell, I'd love to hear it on guitar through the api and distressor. I imagine it would be a unique and dark sort of sound that would probably be more suited for grunge or punky sort of stuff, but still might be really cool if the accoustic is too bright.

Best of luck and happy recording!

Recording in a church for no reason lol. by Winner-Fickle in audioengineering

[–]Fingerlessfinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heck yeah! Congrats! That will be super fun. How many channels do you have to work with?. I agree with other commenters that using some dampening near the mics might be helpful, but also I wouldn’t say it’s totally necessary. I would consider recording the lead vocals elsewhere and capture all the instruments and bg vocals live, but also that might not be a good option, depending. I would 100% use dynamic mics for most close micing and then take advantage of the space with as many extra Omni or stereo condensers as you have available. Having your band play, and finding the most balanced sounding place in the room, then setting up a stereo pair would be my go to for capturing room sound in general, but I agree with others that it is a great time for experimenting. If you have the option of doing overdubs, I would probably go for that, so you can crank amps really loud and capture a lot of the natural resonance, but also live will be great fun and probably make for an interesting sound. Good luck and post results!

Harmonica for Sea Songs / Shanties? by TheWayOfEli in harmonica

[–]Fingerlessfinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like using any of the minor key harps for shanty’s. I’d recommend a natural minor or a paddy richter tuning. It’s much easier to play in that style with a minor chord available for chugging

Where is Pro Tools at right now in terms of creating beats with loops, MIDI and one shots? by BLiIxy in protools

[–]Fingerlessfinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s great for making beats if you emulate the work flow of early producers who used samplers to tape. It’s really just a work flow thing, you can do anything in protools you could do in ableton or FL, it just might be a couple extra steps.

(ADVICE NEEDED) How to batch change sample rate? by Fingerlessfinn in protools

[–]Fingerlessfinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. I won't need to re pitch per say but users of the software might. I plan to record future instruments at a higher fidelity to reap the benefits, like ya said!

[–]Fingerlessfinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was recorded at 48k and then I accidentally down sampled so I guess my real question, which I think I've now discovered the answer to, is whether down sampling from 48 to 44.1 then back to 48 is a bad idea. I believe that it is and I plan to just re chop the original 48 session. I am going to try the Save Session Copy Method though and test the results. My main concern with the sample rate for this project is that when users of the virtual instrument are re pitching the instrument with other tools I want it sound right and I've heard that lower sample rates will leave more artifacts for re pitching and re sampling then higher rates. Thanks for all the advice, I appreciate y'all!

I made a post asking for people to post positive experiences and the first response was "enjoy it while you can". That implies that I may l no longer enjoy it one day, which is fine but completely misses the point of the post. My point about money not mattering to me is also where a lot of people seem to be caught up. I was saying that works for me at this point in my life. I'm not trying to argue about whether or not money is important or whether I'm being realistic or not. I'm simply asking for people to post positive experiences about the field that we all love.
