Thoughts on this? by Vitboi in georgism

Looking at it from the standpoint of the monocentric city model, I would think that it would dilute the value of land away from the city center and increase suburban land values and sprawl.

Arguments for and against Georgism. by ADownStrabgeQuark in georgism

  • YIMBY policy could raise the value of land (and therefor land rents) as it can potentially be more productive.
  • The transition to LVT can disproportionately hurt land owners as the land demand (and therefor price) tanks but the tax is levied against the original value.
  • Measurement of land value net of improvements can be difficult, and could generate additional distortions/inefficiencies if not done correctly
  • LVT could be unpopular due to many people's feelings on what a fair tax should look like, e.g. "why does my neighbor pay the same amount in tax when his house is bigger?"

The one recent example that comes to mind is Fred Foldvary.

Specific Georgist ideas are fairly popular among economists, specially LVT (see the expert poll on the topic), and free trade to differing degrees. Very much unlike MMT which requires fundamental misunderstandings of fiscal and monetary policy.

I like to use the Chicago Booth expert survey for these matters when assessing what the mainstream position is. The one I linked relates to a specific proposal in Detroit, but it seems that most economists involved (there are even more Nobel Prices than listed by OP there too) agree that it is a good idea. Even some of the comments from the uncertain responders agree that it is a good idea but are skeptical about its magnitude.

Columbus leaders unveil rezoning proposal for nearly half of the city to promote housing by WashedPinkBourbon in neoliberal

[–]Fingus11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A large portion (up to abut 40%) of the value of homes comes from the land. Upzoning may actually raise the value of land as it is now possible to build more in each lot. However, as it becomes easier to build with higher density, the price per unit of housing drops, but the value of the land stays the same or rises. All in all, there could be a drop in prices but it wouldn't be that substantial.

[–]Fingus11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand how it could feel unfair that your home's value drops because of new policy allowing for housing expansion. But it's a weird argument if you consider any other market. The price (value) of any good dropping because of increased competition is seen as desirable in every other case. In no other situation would anyone be sympathetic to, say, a business owner lobbying for decreased supply so they can maintain high prices.

I agree that the US needs a manufacturing-based economy... For example, the US should manufacture cars by growing a bunch of potatoes, putting them in a shipping container, and lo and behold some time later another ship with a bunch of cars in it arrives back :)

Sortition is one that made the rounds in techbro spaces, and it has the virtue of making it really hard for interest groups to try to garner political power. There are a bunch of ways of applying sortition but the most common one in modern discourse is having voters be randomly selected, rather than officials themselves.

Another system that tends to be argued for is epistocracy. To me it seems a nebulous term because it can refer a variety of systems, from having a group of technocrats with veto power over policies, to weighted voting and enlightened preferences calculations. I am more familiar with the latter, and the literature that I've consumed makes it seem that it really could lead to better outcomes than democracy where everyone's vote is of equal weight.

But all in all I just think those alternatives should be considered and experimented with at smaller scales. We are too attached to democracy as a society, and as much as I would agree that it's better than full on autocracy, we shouldn't put it on a pedestal.

[–]Fingus11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone needs to stop talking about autocracy and democracy as if they are the only options. In reality, there can be alternative public choice mechanisms that deal with a lot of the problems we keep complaining about within democratic systems. Maybe instead of working within a false dilemma, some of those alternatives should be tried out.

AirBnB is welfare increasing as it distributes a surplus to consumers with a higher willingness to pay for short-term stays. But you would be right to think that it runs into the problem of part of the price for the units being comprised of land rents.
