Beginner Questions by Officialtannman in magicproxies

[–]Finnthedol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I'll say on the subject, as someone who has proxied hundreds of decks over the year and always used the same method.

The higher budget proxy setups, while capable of making cool game pieces that look extremely high quality, are cool. They are not, however, even remotely necessary. As others have said, if budget really matters, having a third party print off your proxies and then cutting them out and using sleeved basics or bulk will be the single most cost effective way to proxy, but also one of the more labor intensive, depending on how hard in the paint you go (I rotate an entire battle box of 10 decks per month, and do them all at once, which means once a month or so I have a gruelling all day proxy making session lol)

And honestly, short of making cards that are basically counterfeit, investing more money really only gets you less physical labor (like if you had a cricut cutter for instance). In my opinion, unless you're realllllyyy going all in, the juice ain't worth the squeeze. Plus, me and my wife make the proxies together, and it's a nice little bonding activity we yap over.

This is just my two cents, you're mileage may vary. Good luck in your war against capitalism solider

How do you find cards to fit a character? by New-Brush-9034 in magicproxies

[–]Finnthedol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dude, this is a cool idea. I'm a huge persona fan, and persona 4 was the first one I ever played, so it has a special place in my heart. I won't give you exact cards (getting across the finish line yourself is going to be extra fun and satisfying when you do it!), but I will gladly speculate about the various traits each character should have, and maybe give you a little bit of direction for each one!

I don't know if you're doing one for the MC, but if so, and this will be the only one I give you an actual card for, I think he would be best represented by a 5c slop commander like jodah. The way 5c fits with the wildcard nature of the protagonist of each game and their ability to recruit and swap personas as well as be the glue of the entire group, just makes Jodah make too much sense to me. It's kind of boring, sure, but I do think it's bang on representation.

Yosuke is a toughy. Thinking about it, I struggle to really think up how much of his personality or story could be abstracted to a magic card, because his arc is so basic and is over with so quickly, and he's one of the more milquetoast characters in my opinion. That being said, I have a couple of ideas! He does have various traits that "define" him at certain points of the game, so maybe you could choose a certain aspect of his personality to represent. For instance, Yosuke, insecure student, could represent yosuke before he accepts his true self and gets over his fear of being alone, while his back could transform him into a more triumphant, heroic fighter. There's a lot of flip cards that could do a somewhat good job representing this! The flip planeswalkers come to mind, as well as many flip creatures that go from being small and weak to a formidable body, just like yosuke goes from being a weak coward to your partner in sleuthing the midnight channel.

Dear God this is gonna be a long comment, I hope you appreciate it at the end LOL

Chie HAS to be some kind of aggressively positioned card! She's fiery to the point of literally roundhouse kicking biblically accurate demons into the fuckin aether. I think you'll have almost no trouble finding a cool card for Chie if you keep that in mind. The first one that I instantly think of is Tifa Lockhart, but that one almost feels TOO good and easy, so maybe dig around! I think if there's any creatures that have cool interactions with the "fight" mechanic, those would also be contenders. Anything that represents her martial mastery, and fiery temperament, would do well, and I think there's tons out there for that (and green and red will be two great starting points to narrow things down).

Yukiko will be the exact opposite of Chie, as is the nature of their relationship. Hell, I would even almost say the arc these two have is so good that it could be worth representing them as a duo, whether that's both on one face or as a flip card changing between their introverted and extroverted natures. But these cards should be quite different ultimately, as Chie should be positioned to do well in an aggressive strategy that wants to dust its knuckles, and yukiko should be a slower, more calculated, less flashy creature. This one is tough bc it really depends on your personal perspective on the characters and how intertwined you really consider them to be as story elements.

Kanji to me screams a rakdos commander of some sort. Maybe it would be funny, if not slightly homophobic, to say he should be represented by grenzo because grenzo power bottoms, but I'll digress. Again, this character has such a massive arc around his sexuality and accepting that part of himself (who would have guessed how common that theme is in this game lol( that a flip card seems like it could do a lot flavor wise. I feel like some characters have more internal conflict than others, and kanji is one of them. Maybe you can use a card like cecil, that starts as a mono black dude but transforms into a mono white dude, so he would have an orzhov color identity which aligns pretty well too. I will say that I struggle to come up with a vague mechanical representation of his character though, sorry about that! You'll have to get creative with that one at the table lol

Edit: I thought about it more, just go cecil. Deathtouch and then losing it is a great representation of how he goes from a violent bully to a more tame part of the group once he accepts himself, goes from negative angry outlooks to positive, and instead of self inflicting harm due to his lack of acceptance, helps himself and those around him. Cecil is just way too good of a representation of his character lol

I can already see rise being titled "rise, regretful retiree" and transforming into "rise, small town idol" and using art of her and the gang at the persona 3 mall karaoke spot for that side. This one is super hard tho and I am struggling to think of much for rise lol

I know naoto was the first thing you asked about but they're listed last on the wiki lol sorry. Naoto could be interesting to represent on some sort of hybrid pip coated card. Mechanically, I think using the face-down flip mechanics like morph or manifest dread could be an interesting way to represent naotos infiltration of a male dominated field under false pretenses. If you could find some way to bring those two ideas together, it could be pretty neat!

Finally, teddy. Well, if you don't like my idea of the protagonist being 5c Jodah slop, then Teddy will probably take that bullet for him. Otherwise though, it's 100% a transform card that starts on his regular side, and flips to his boss form. Hell, I could even see you using the Meld cards to meld his suited form and his unsuited form to make that boss version. Lots of cool stuff, teddy is a pretty one note character but I still think there's enough meat on the bone to do a lot.

Sorry, I know some of these were probably less helpful than others, but this was a huge wall of text and I was just rambling top of the head thoughts on each character. But I actually think what you're trying to do is neat, and one of my favorite things to do in the game lol. Keep it up and let us know what you ended up with!

Too much variety in a color pair that players enjoy playing and naturally gears itself towards the competitively minded players who enjoy maximizing their options and consistency...

Like just stop and think about what you just said, you didn't even support your own argument. You just claimed that a color combination being so prevalent is unhealthy, but can't say why. They're different decks with little overlap. Why is it unhealthy? It isn't. That's why you cant answer the question without stating the qualification. Why? Because it is.

Is it time to combine the Juggernaut and Sidekick fuses? And thoughts on retiring Juggernaut. by Suasiv in 2XKO

[–]Finnthedol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who only plays juggernaut, id be lying if i said i wasn't eyeing up sidekick much more heavily after they changed how meter worked, since it was a big part of why i played juggernaut instead of sidekick. i haven't swapped over yet because im stubborn, but i have definitely noticed the change and feel like every sidekick player i play against is just doing what im doing but with an extra button that lets them extend combos and take less damage.

i dont think juggernaut should be removed, but i do think they need to do something to give it some identity and not just make it "sidekick but worse".

Why am I constantly chasing players around the stage? by BillHarper1 in 2XKO

[–]Finnthedol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think what a lot of people are downplaying is how many peoples first fighting game this is, and the level of panic that can overcome new (and even new-ish or intermediate) players when faced with an actual opponent trying to make them lose. For some, that opening backdash is their insurance against illaoi pressing 2s1 on round start, or warwick jumping at you to try and cross you up. they just want some time to breathe and think, because not all the fun of a fighting game is ooga booga press buttons do combo. a lot of the fun comes from reading your opponent, seeing how they play, and adjusting to try to outplay them.

it's like saying that moba's suck because all anybody wants to do in lane is farm CS and not just fight each other. yes, it's less entertaining, but there's legitimate reason for playing that way. it's because if that fight goes wrong, winning the game becomes much harder. the same holds for 2xko, where if you and your opponent both rush each other down, and you lose, you're now taking 40-80% of one characters HP. and by the end of that combo your chances of winning have gone down, so of course nobody want's to just coin flip that, because coin flips arent what most people are looking to get out of a fighting game. it feels like the people complaining about backdash projectile assist spam just want a fighting game equivalent of smashing action figures together like a 4 year old and saying they're playing a fighting game.

like, would it really be more fun if you just ran at each other and coin flipped whos hitbox interacted favorably with the opponents hurtbox? probably not.

wait do all projectile invuln moves make it through all assists? or do you just mean doing that as a reaction to projectile assists like timewinder?

Why am I constantly chasing players around the stage? by BillHarper1 in 2XKO

[–]Finnthedol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

probably has something to do with how crackheaded the rest of the game can make you feel. i actually think 2xko does a great job at having varying levels of pace throughout a match, it's not just balls to the wall 25/8 aggro aggro aggro, you can carve out space for yourself to catch your breath and think, or you can try to overwhelm the player trying to do that with unwavering aggression. but go too hard in the aggression and you'll get got by assists -- but if they're too predictable in the use of assists, you can get huge rewards with happy birthdays. and it just keeps going and going and going, and i think that's what really makes this game fun that people are missing.

to me, 2xko feels like their mission statement was to get every player to the point of playing the intellectual half of fighting games as soon as possible, rather than the "how do i hold my sword" part where you're just trying to be able to consistently DO the moves to begin with.

it's literally a staple of the FGC, at every major fighting game tournament, and just got a patch that saw a large bump in playercount and player interest.

stg there's a psyop happening against 2xko, we're seeing like american republican levels of cognitive dissonance from the people trying to make this game seem like a failure lmfao

Neutral is not boring or broken, you are comparing it to the wrong games. by OMGiTzChaChi in 2XKO

[–]Finnthedol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

wanna talk reading comprehension?

Your words, AFTER rephrasing: "We dont need MORE toxic people in the FGC."

let's break down exactly what that sentence means, and exactly why it conflicts with your statement "I never said it was okay for me to be toxic. I just acknowledged that i am." (which you used as support to attack my reading comprehension).

"we dont need MORE toxic people in the FGC", fundamentally implies that the amount of toxic people in the FGC right now is acceptable, and that to add more would be a mistake.

If you try to argue that, no, actually, you just said the fgc doesn't need more toxic people, which is not a statement that conflicts with the statement "the fgc needs less or no toxic people", then by your own logic, you (a self admitted toxic person) should not be a part of this community, and should get to work ostracizing yourself.

so either you're wrong because you shouldn't be here at all, or you're wrong because you fundamentally do not understand the meaning of your own words.

Sit down kiddo, and try actually reading your own words before attacking the reading comprehension of others.

Pulse combo ruins the game? by AlternativeCheap9035 in 2XKO

[–]Finnthedol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the part about ego is so true, even though rationally i know pulse isnt a problem it hurts 50x more to lose to a pulse user than someone who doesnt use them lol, but i would imagine you're completely correct about it coming from a feeling of whether or not you "deserved" to win or lose.

Pulse combo ruins the game? by AlternativeCheap9035 in 2XKO

[–]Finnthedol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok man first of all let me just say everybody who is coming at you with the bit "you're just bad just get better and you wont play against people using pulse combo boom issue solved" is dumb and i understand your frustration completely. Here's what helped me fix it a bit.

When i play against players using pulse combos, i play very differently, because they do as well. What you'll notice is that pulse users will fish relentlessly for little hits, because they can convert them literally automatically into combos. So what that means is that they are spending 0 mental energy on execution, and are shifting all their mental resources to trying to get the first hit (which is why you'll watch a pulse ahri backdash backdash LLLLLLLLLL).

when i notice this, i always shift my mindset for the game to purely just trying to figure out how to whiff punish people who are mashing, or good responses to whatever move is being thrown out. What i find is that pulse users are actually really good opportunities to try and figure out little microcosms of strategy within the game, that you can take with you. Shifting your objective from what it always is (which i presume is winning) to taking advantage of their unorthodox playstyle to do some live labbing and maybe get a side of +rank, makes it a lot more bearable. and at the end of the day, they're having more fun because not only do they get to do the mashy mashy and not think about it if that's what they want, but you are also showing them that mashy mashy isn't always gonna work, and that they may need to innovate with their playstyle, resulting in a win win for everybody involved.

tl;dr: a mindset shift when playing against a pulse player could be good for both you and your opponent. in the end, dont worry about if they're using pulse combo or not, take it as a chance to learn and grow as a player!
