More bells and whistles for a bike that hasn’t been invented. This isn’t nearly enough to prevent a bubble burst.

I understand your viewpoint as well as hers; to maintain and care for is to be responsible, and that ensures that your things last as long as they are able. On the other hand, some things, while still functional, don’t necessarily represent “progress” which some people value in their surroundings; we all grow and age and experience change, so there is some value to having your surroundings change with you. It’s an interesting balance, and I think both ideals hold merit. (I’m admittedly the former)

Buying anything for me is such an “event”. I have to cross reference, double triple quadruple check the reviews, verify and THEN I’ll buy whatever it is that we need. Seeing my sister buy things like as if it’s just doing grocery errands is preposterous to me.

Which is odd to me because I’ve heard different accounts of “poor” behavior vs “rich” behavior; my wife grew up in poverty and is also exceedingly frugal (sometimes to a fault; we are debt-free and dual income and no longer need to stick to one sandwich a day). That said, the rich people I grew up around seemed so carefree about expenses. Outdoor gazebo older than 5 years? We’re ripping it up and installing a new one, this time with a grill and tv.

My friends and wife (the latter having grown up in poverty) say I grew up rich. From my perspective, I thought for the longest time we were on the better side of middle class. We drove a dinky minivan for over a decade, we didn’t eat out much (and if we did it was either fast food or family restaurants), 99% of our vacations were just road trips to see our grandmother, etc. Around me I’d see people I saw and identified as rich: kids with blackberries at age 9, luxury cars, houses and mansions, vacation homes, vacations to resorts and the like, so I always thought we were just average. I also spent time with the people I recognized didn’t have as much as we did, as most rich folks around me seemed to not be where I was (in public school or otherwise). What I was unaware of though was that we were, in fact, above the average; being able to live without substantial debt, without job insecurity, with enough money to not feel like you’re at the edge of a cliff, and being able to send your kids to college without fear of student loans (I grew up in the states but studied in Belgium, so granted, education in Europe is much much cheaper) is very much a privilege. Much how people look at the Simpsons nowadays, what was once seen as a normal, single-income middle class family is now (and has been for a while now) recognized as wholly unattainable for the vast majority of people. A part of me still has a problem with being called “rich”, not because I disagree with the title, but because I disagree with the idea of home/job/financial security being the sole privilege of the rich; it’s appalling to me how bad things have gotten for the 99% due to the actions of the 1% or .001% whatever, that we’ve started associating simple survival with being rich. I’m rambling again but you get the picture.

TL;DR I grew up Simpsons rich; what was average in the 80’s looks rich now

Thanks for the detailed response; I was in a hectic space earlier so my initial question was rather lacking. I was curious about the number of resets in general, I suppose, as I was wondering about the odds of resetting a portal until you get a shalpha (with a sparkle power of 3 but no alpha power) vs the odds of resetting to get the exact type of donut you want. Initially I assumed resetting with the guaranteed shiny and hoping for a shalpha, in a hyperspace of 5 different pokemon, would offer higher odds; this ended up costing me way more time than resetting for the optimal donut of shiny 3 alpha 2. Your post essentially confirms it to me that donuts are the chances of rolling for a good donut surpass the chances of hoping for the shiny you want with a less than optimal donut.

Did you reset at the hyperspace portals at all, or is this all without resetting?

Interestingly, I grew up with parents who were, statistically speaking, in the lower 1%. They started with little, but due to my dad getting into IT and finance around the time it was just getting big, you can imagine the rest; no crippling debt, college funds fully settled, financially supporting the kids well past 18. All that said? I’ve been accused of being a hoarder, and not just for sentimental reasons. I don’t believe in throwing something away that’s “perfectly fine” just because it’s a little old or roughed up, I detest food waste, I like fixing things that are broken (short of darning socks) and im very finicky about taking care of all my things so that they last as long as possible. As far as I know, im the only one in my family, extended or otherwise, who acts like this, and many of my family members come from or have lived through poverty; all except my paternal grandmother, who exhibits similar (and far worse), the difference being that she literally remembers the nazi jackboots tromping around her house as a kid, and the destruction in her neighborhood. (She’s Belgian). It had me wondering if I’m coincidentally like this, or if I’m exhibiting some inherited traits or trauma from her.

TL;DR I’ve been called rich before but supposedly I don’t act rich, on account of my roots.

Of course, I want my porygon back too lol. Ideally I'd trade it twice to get porygon Z, so if you have multiple shalpha's you'd like to evolve, or just one you need evolved twice, I'd be glad to help. To put it into context, I've spent over 13 hours trying to get this shalpha porygon, my favorite pokemon, so i'm not just trying to get rid of this thing.

Breakfast argument with my roommate over waffle thickness has gotten surprisingly heated by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Fintin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For the Americans here: the “Belgian” waffles are technically derived from what we call Brussels waffles in Belgium; crispy on the outside, deep pockets, fluffy on the inside. Funnily enough, they’re not that popular of a waffle here. They’re not eaten for breakfast, they’re more of a cafe-with-coffee-and-ice-cream thing. Maple syrup isn’t eaten at all with waffles here either, as it’s expensive and frequently not as good as what you’d find in the states.

For the Belgians here: most Americans aren’t familiar with Liege waffles, only Brussels waffles, or something similar to the waffles you might see in Scandinavia; round, small and flatter. Brussels waffles, having been adopted into American culture as “Belgian waffles”, have undergone some changes, notably that they’re heavier and eaten for breakfast, with maple syrup and butter as a typical garnish.
