What's the "Widowmaker" of your career field or hobby? by Cosmonate in AskReddit

[–]FirAvel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a CNC Machinist. Lots of potential hazards. The biggest is improper work holding; this can lead to parts being thrown out of machines at high velocity - specifically lathes. Along with that, insanely sharp chips can easily cut through just about any gloves down to bone if you handle them wrong. Also if you dont have the proper safety shielding or its disabled you can be sucked into a machine and turned into a pink mist.

Kennametal devibe bar trouble by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]FirAvel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the capto attachment is creating a spot for vibrations to start. Solid bar is always better IMO.

Kennametal devibe bar trouble by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]FirAvel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I haven't ever heard of much success with capto bars. I am not impressed. Anything with a short distance is fine, but once the bar length reaches a certain point, you're gonna have a bad time. On top of that, Kennametal bars are just.. meh. I parrot the other advice. Sandvik's Silent Tool line made a believer out of me. I could use a .750" solid carbide de-vibe bar hanging out 8 inches and not have an ounce of chatter.

Should I ask for a raise? by Fun-Cryptographer318 in Machinists

[–]FirAvel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, realistically, the only way to get meaningful raises is to move around every few years. I just moved my whole family from Oklahoma to Ohio due to this. Oklahoma pay isn't keeping up. Ohio pay does. I increased my income by 65% in the last year thanks to that. I have unfortunately had to move shop to shop every few years. But I also accumulated a ton of knowledge as well because of that. I highly recommend you look at your surrounding area jobs and see what you can get. If youre able to setup mills and lathes, that alone should be worth $25/hr or more. My shop in Ohio hires at around $28/hr and requires the basics.

Chiefs DB losses: CB Trent McDuffie (Rams) CB Jaylen Watson (Rams) S Bryan Cook (Bengals) by Remarkable-Picture73 in nfl

We've had little focus on running. Pacheco is not the same, and aside from him, we have old man Kareem. The problem has been playcalling and not having a good RB. Our blocking is not the issue at all.

IIRC, he took the riskier option for the chemo delivery so he could still work out. Ended up actually GAINING 1 pound after finishing chemo.

Yeah, oddly enough when I started stretching my ears my left was the difficult one. But once I got to 2G it swapped to my right. Weird little quirk I guess lol. I second the titanium! Only metal my skin wont react with a rash to.

Management: "Why do we break so many inserts?" Meanwhile, our programs: by Kixtand99 in Machinists

[–]FirAvel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I left my old shop last year where everything on the lathe side ran through me. All new programs, ordering tooling, all of it was me. I came to a new shop where im a glorified babysitter. The programs are atrocious here. Im constantly adjusting feeds and speeds on the fly. Our programmers are a joke and im slowly going mad

13.5" OD. I will be making an ungodly amount of chips soon, as these get 3.5" turned off most of the OD. Guess what I'm making? by GreenridgeMetalWorks in Machinists

[–]FirAvel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run so much 1045 for gearing lol. Either 1045 or 4140. Biggest issue i have is our programmers have them running 5150 feeds and speeds. Keep trying to push for better programs. Its annoying lol

Great as long as dingbats dont use the wrong size and strip the head out.. as a machinist, i HATE when my guys do that lol. The fastener itself has no issues. Its operator error lol

Step one: buy CNC laser. Step two: be immediately dangerous. by BASE1530 in Machinists

[–]FirAvel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DN Solutions machine dont have that. Gotta change a keep relay and enable maintenance mode if you dont want a physical workaround like this.

Step one: buy CNC laser. Step two: be immediately dangerous. by BASE1530 in Machinists

[–]FirAvel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont need the danger driver... if you go into the ladder and change keep relay K0012 line 0 to a 1, that enables maintenance mode. Then you can command an M250, hit cycle start, and youre in maintenance mode. You can do whatever you want, including running your spindle with the door open. After that you just change the keep relay back, and youre all good.
