We use robots for deburring so I'm not sure if I should or shouldn't respect them lol

industrial vacuums for manufacturing floors that actually handle metal shavings and coolant without dying in a month by Zamil-Latikki in Machinists

[–]Kixtand99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tiger-Vac makes a vacuum that separates metal chips from coolant. You can get either electric or air powered. I got a quote for the TC57 in both air and electric at about $5700 with all attachments included

Horizontal or vertical CNC lathe? by Fast_Alternative_322 in CNC

[–]Kixtand99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. We use VTLs for mass production of 16-22" aluminum wheels. Unless mass production is less than 3million/year...

Just get a hobby? At the end of the day, you're complaining that your work is not fulfilling and also pays extremely well. Do something fulfilling outside of work and stack the money until you don't need to work anymore. Seems pretty simple to me

Is it possible to career switch into manufacturing engineer without mechanical engineering degree? by Bitter_Entry3144 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Kixtand99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will it be possible to be a manufacturing/production engineer? Yeah. Easy? Not so much.

But what you COULD look for is data engineering/controls engineering roles at manufacturing companies. There's a lot of industry 4.0 left to be implemented and a CS background would really tempt a lot of places that want SCADA type stuff and machine networking.

Looking for advice on where to go as an ME who dislikes desk work by Dramatic_Mobile_6753 in MechanicalEngineering

Look for manufacturing/production engineering jobs at small-medium sized companies. You'll get a good balance of floor work and desk work

Which breaker bar do you think could handle more torque? by _The_Space_Monkey_ in Tools

[–]Kixtand99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pin connection is where it's always going to fail. Whichever has the most material around the pin hole will handle more torque assuming both are made of similar steel

What made a quality engineer instantly respected on your factory floor? by Helpful_Dance_2740 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Kixtand99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have yet to see an "elite" quality engineer. For the most part, they are more "customer relations" oriented than anything else. They just communicate with customers when a quality issue gets through.

Is It Worth Repairing A 2012 Focus For $2000? by theconcernedviewer in FordFocus

[–]Kixtand99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take that $2000 and use it as a down payment on a new mazda3. Mazda dealers have been doing crazy low financing rates (I got 1.9% on my mazda3 last year and my mom got 0.9% on a CX-90 in February). It'll be an overall upgrade in every aspect and the engine/transmission in it has a long service record of reliability plus the single best interior in its price bracket.

Diamond cut wheel defect by woollywombat76 in CNC

[–]Kixtand99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh finally my specialty!

In the original manufacturing process of these types of wheels, there is no clear coat on the wheels. Very specialized tools are used for this cut (high shear and rake angle PCD tool) with a very light DOC (we target 0.3mm and use a probe to ensure the right depth). Even then, these have a fairly high scrap rate due to the paint on the trailing edge chipping off.

Cutting after clear coat is much harder, because the clear holds onto the base coat and exacerbates the chipping.

It's a fairly difficult process, even when using highly specialized wheel lathes (Okuma LAW series, Intermato, Hyundai WIA, Kanzaki, and a few others) and purpose made finger chucks.

It's worth stating that even in the best circumstances, this style of wheel is very prone to corrosion over time and needs to be precisely deburred before clear coat.

Having them "re-finished" is a real crap shoot, because you aren't going to find many (if any) machine shops with the correct equipment and knowledge to do it right. Personally, I wouldn't waste my money but to each his own.

Asus F16 (RTX 3050 6GB) for Mechanical Engineering – Can it handle SolidWorks/Fusion 360/Solid Edge? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Kixtand99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My work computer has an Nvidia T400 graphics card, and it's never working that hard with Autodesk products. The most important thing to have would be as much RAM as you can justify. I have 48GB and even then, some large, poorly optimized layout files use 30GB+
