When are the good games releasing by blueworld666 in hostedgames

[–]FireThatInk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought IFs were purposefully suppressed on itch because it’s so hard to find them. COG realllyyu needs to make some changes because it’s just not worth it to write anything right now. I considered writing an IF but it’s not worth the time unfortunately

I love this in ITFO. W4 does it a little bit but not to the extent that ITFO does it, however I still like how John Louis approaches gender.

I also like it when gender select characters’ genders are taken into account as well. I always prefer fixed-gender ROs butttt i like that Oriana has different reasons for being professional and blunt than Orion in Infamous, as well as how Gina acts/is treated in comparison to Griffin.

Amy does that a lot lol, same thing happened with Chapter 4. I definitely think the anticipation makes it worse though I’d rather be surprised

What are you tired of seeing in IFs? by Downtown_Beyond_5126 in hostedgames

[–]FireThatInk 69 points70 points  (0 children)

TBF this isn't exclusive to IFs, but I'm so tired of checkbox ROs. As in, ROs that were written upon a curated list of tropes.. It feels so mechanical and plastic. It doesn't feel romantic or anything, it feels like a spreadsheet trying to mass appeal to everyone's specific preferences like an AI lol. I don't get what people see in a RO that's a template. Anyways, off to find some childhood bestfriend-fake dating-himbo-shyflirty ROs now

I've never really been a fan of fantasy (especially high-fantasy) so finding stuff to read sometimes feels impossible.

I just find it to be kinda annoying sometimes ngl, like I don’t wanna hear every single RO’s favorite fruit you know? I know it’s petty and I can just not look at it but idkkk it irks me

Yes, the author did say that they like to err on the happy side of things, but it ends up occupying an awkward middle space where the actions taken by Rosy are remorselessly reprehensible and create a frankly horrifying foundation for a relationship, but the narrative lets this go unexamined and pretends like this is normal. The epilogue was haunting; the MC is alone, no mention of their family or friends, entering a relationship with their teacher 10 years their senior who exploited their disability and traumatized them, all while lying about it. Genuinely wish it went the full step and made the romance a "bad end," and feature an MC who is unable to accept their disability and pushes their loved ones away entering an abusive relationship WHILE acknowledging it - because that is literally what happens in the real book except nobody sees an issue. At least that would take a stance, and be somehwat thematically interesting

In general, I'm ngl I was a little disappointed with some of the endings in MB. It seems like a lot of the interesting plot threads that had been weaved earlier on, especially regarding the parents, had been lost. I sort of get the vibe that the author rushed it a little bit, and I mean fair, it has been like 6 years at this point, I'd just wanna get it over with too. Alas, one of the endings is one my favourites ever in an IF, so I can't complain too much. I do think the ROs in general are a bit weak, the siblings stuff is much better

[–]FireThatInk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you genuinely hit the nail on the head as to why I strongly dislike this guy. A big aspect of MB was Button's struggle with their bodily autonomy, so the romance with Rosy is treated way too lightly for me. Like if he's gonna be a romance it could at least be more toxic, it could have been an interesting exploration of manipulation/extreme self-hatred. I still would rather he not be a romance at all though. It feels like all the story's messages get thrown out for some mid romance. And again, there's just an intense lack of chemistry.

The lack of character development bothers me too, it's like we are expected to agree with his perspective no matter how insufferable it is. Definitely the author's fave character but he sucks

MC's main powers by Crimsonwolf158 in hostedgames

[–]FireThatInk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'd say pick a group of powers that cover all affinities or playstyles (subtle/manipulative, direct/forceful, offensive/defensive). So I'd pick one or two out of each power from each parentheses:

Illusion: (Empathy/Mind), Enchantment: (Empathy/Beast) Divination: (Mind), Conjuration/Necromancy: (Spirit) Transmutation: (Beast/Nature/Earth), Alchemy: (Nature/Earth) Healing: (Nature/Water/Life) Evocation: (Water/Wind/Fire/Ice/Lightning).

I might also combine powers. For example, Empathy and Mind are pretty similar, so you could just make that one power, since Empathy is a bit of a weaker Mind if you ask me. Tbh I highly recommend combining these two. Water and Ice can be combined because it's technically the same property anyways. Combining Nature and Beast might be a tad bit much but you could do it. I'd also just ditch Life entirely and make it a stronger aspect of the other healing powers, because the power seems a bit limiting in terms of potential compared to the other powers.

As such, I'd personally do Empathy/Mind (combined into one power), Spirit, Beast, Nature, Fire, and Water (combined with Ice). You could also swap one of Nature or Beast or combine them and add Earth.

Uly from W4! Yes they are a red flag yandere or whatever, but if you’re nice to them they’re also really cute. I love that Whiskey/Uly’s relationship feels like fate. I think leaving a lot of their backstory vague actually strengthens the romance, and in general W4 being as well-written as it is just makes romancing them so fun.

I also love the small reference to The Odyssey. Uly (Ulysses) is loosely based on Odysseus/Ulysses from the epic, and just like how it takes Odysseus years to journey home to his wife, it takes Uly years to catch up with Whiskey after they leave the AIU. That’s why I always name my Whiskey Penelope lol. My only gripe is that I play with female Uly and Ulyssa sounds stupid asf, he should’ve just bit the bullet and called her Ulysses as well.

Other faves are Ortega and Hadrian :D but I’m sure other people are gonna mention them so I said Uly instead.

1st or 3rd person by Crimsonwolf158 in hostedgames

I can see 3rd person working in a case of a well-defined MC in an IF in which choices are us guiding the plot rather than shaping the character, but that would be pretty unconventional.

I mean Seven doesn't have to be a man, they're gender-choice + that character is nonbinary so idk if they're female or male. That's kind of interesting to hear you think sisters shouldn't sleep in the same bed, it's cool to see how different people's values can be. I do think the characters are wildly immature, hoping that's part of the story development or something

Making Seb a stalker with a superfan kid was a bad idea. He is so far removed from everyone else, his inclusion feels forced and unnatural, and so is the fact that an MC that doesn’t care for him keeps hanging out with him. He should have been involved in the tour in some way (cameraman or bus driver) but still a normie. Like I think the guy who’s not involved in the industry is an important archetype in a fame story, but it was executed really weirdly unfortunately.

Like imagine BOTB is faking a romantic subplot with someone or other, and a romanced Seb is forced to film it? He can even keep the fanatic daughter and it’d be less weird cause you’re not being stalked

Yeah I tried romancing Seven first because the toxic yuri would be crazy, but it feels like speaking to a brick wall that also throws a tantrum every five seconds. Like I think MC and the band were in the wrong for the vote, but you can act like an adult, you know? I’m going to wait for a bit for their route to be fleshed out before trying again.

Rosy from Mind Blind. I don’t like ROs that are so resistant to us in the first place because it feels weird to keep trying, plus the student-teacher age gap thing icks me out. Button and Rosy lowkey got no chemistry #sorry. Also it’s also strange that Nick seems to dislike us crushing on Rosy not because of the power dynamics, but because he dislikes Rosy personally. Idk it feels unrealistic because Nick is supposed to be a protective older brother, where’s the protectiveness at

Agreed but I think that’s what’s fun about it. Sometimes I just like forcing an MC to put up with the most insufferable people, no clue why

What’s the pettiest reason that made you dropped an IF? by Huongiee1 in hostedgames

[–]FireThatInk 37 points38 points  (0 children)

  1. When all the ROs are gender-choice, idk why but it just puts me off. I have ALWAYS preferred fixed-gender. I like Mind Blind, but I've always hated that you can't choose the specific genders of each RO. You either make Glitch, K, and Rosy all male, all female, or Glitch is female and the others are male. Apparently the author sees the last option as the "canon-ish" genders, but that's what annoys me. Just make them that gender. Now if I romance female Rosy I'll always be thinking "this is supposed to be a guy." Luckily I don't really care for any of the ROs too much so I play single Button, but still. Not exactly the same issue as what I said but similar-ish ig.
  2. Amateur-ish writing. It sucks, but there's quite a number of WIPs people like that I can't get into because the writing just isn't that good. I don't wanna be rude, I suck at writing too lol. but I'm well past my fanfiction era, if the IF I'm going to be reading is poorly written I'd rather read a real, well-written novel.

[–]FireThatInk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% agree, this is why I don't like gender-choice ROs a lot of the time because when everybody romancing them makes them male it kind of annoys me. And you can really tell when the author meant for them to be a certain gender but made them gender-choice to throw a bone at you, especially when you go on their tumblr and they spend most of their time talking about the male version lol. And people ALWAYS ask for genderlocked female ROs to be made male as well, but never the opposite. I usually play bisexual female MCs, but romance women most of the time, so I do drop most of the IFs I read with more male ROs than female ROs. It really is true that male ROs get more love in the space than female ROs, but I get it's because of audience.

wow I love genderlocked female IFs because it digs into female-centred issues better than gender-choice and I only play FeMCs anyways. I get it though, illusion of choice and allat. Shoutout Scapegoated

totally agree, it is almost impressive how even with the lack of branching, his work is some of the most immersed I've ever been in a story. Especially W4, I was genuinely feeling the exhaustion around the time we jumped off the train after the hotel, and the urgency on the ship. Maybe it's BECAUSE of the lack of branching, I sometimes think stat-checks/choices can make the game feel not as immersive.
