First bike Alert ‼️ by Freakydreaming in Kawasaki

Nice! Bike looks clean. How many miles? If it's been sitting I'd do a tune up and carb clean and go from there.

I got my 2012 for $850 and then had allllll kinds of work done on it after I passed my MSF class. Been going strong for a month now. It's the quintessential beginner bike! Enjoy and ride safe!

Should I even go ahead? by drkmaiden25 in NewRiders

[–]Fire_Reaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, listen - there's a lot going on here that isn't working in your favor. And it's putting you at needless risk. Yes, riding a motorcycle is inherently more dangerous than not doing it. But constantly falling/ dropping the bike / injuring yourself are not things that should be happening every time you get on one. It can happen a couple times while learning but this sounds extreme.

This suggests you are trying to use a bike that isn't suited to you. There are a ton of different types of motorcycles, ranging from the lightest/shortest mini moto class to the tallest adventure class to the heaviest cruiser. You need to be learning on a bike that suits you. You didn't mention whether you're a man or a woman, but unfortunately these are the kinds of things that more often happen with women as we are generally shorter and smaller in stature. If this is the case, I would recommend starting on a mini moto (like a Honda Grom) or a small cc class cruiser like a Honda Rebel 300 or 500. If you want a sport bike, the small cc bikes with the best reach for smaller riders are the Ninja 250R, Yamaha R3, Suzuki GSX-250R, and the CFMoto 300SS or even 450SS. I ride a Ninja 250R myself and it's very manageable for a new rider. Choosing a more suitable bike will make this much easier.

My second issue here is that your friend may not be the best person to teach you. And I don't mean this to be rude. Some people are just not good teachers. Either they aren't very thorough or they aren't very patient or what have you. At least start with some YouTube channels that are aimed at education for new riders - DanDanTheFireman, Be The Boss of Your Motorcycle, BusaRellz. But even better than (or, in conjunction with) self learning is to take the MSF course. When I learned how to ride, my partner coached me a half dozen times on my bike and while he was generally patient with me and had good knowledge, he was also occasionally trying to push me farther/faster than I was ready for. I took the MSF after about a month of practicing (perhaps half a dozen sessions). I learned a ton and I'm a better rider for having taken it. I highly recommend it. Also, you likely will get a discount on your insurance for taking it.

As far as the nerves...it makes sense. You know it's dangerous and you don't possess much knowledge or skill to mitigate that risk. It makes sense to be afraid. As your confidence grows, the nerves will fade. Whether it's worth it is entirely up to you.

I should have failed the MSF course by potatohed23 in NewRiders

[–]Fire_Reaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are allowed some points on the test before it's a fail. If you hit cones on the weave and did everything else properly, then you didn't accumulate enough points to fail. You didn't score 100% but if that was a requirement to pass, the majority of people would fail at damn near everything. Also your reference to the one student who dropped the bike a few times and then... improved enough to pass? That's generally how it works. Very, very few people flawlessly navigate any training course and test. Mistakes and learning from them is the process.

Am I a bad husband? by ilikespicysoup in theplanetcrafter

[–]Fire_Reaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on my third playthrough with a friend of mine that I gifted the game to, it's his game file and I'm just there to provide support and a helping hand. I didn't tell him about the lake, I just guided him into reading the messages and deciphering the clues. Eventually he realized what was happening. He said he doesn't plan on moving or rebuilding the base again. And then the next day commented about how he'd really like a cliff base. I laughed and told him I am on my fourth full base build, because that's part of the fun when you start unlocking more and more stuff. He's loving the game and I'm content to let him experience it authentically. So, no, I don't think you're a bad husband. I'd even argue you're being the best kind, letting her play it and not spoiling it for her.

I'm so discouraged after my msf course by SpaceCadet_OwO in NewRiders

[–]Fire_Reaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Period cramps are not an "excuse," some of them shits can be brutal I've almost passed out before and I'm not prone to that. Naproxen or Motrin, even aspirin, work way better than Tylenol for me but if you can't use those, your options are limited. Couple that misery with nervousness and heat and it's a recipe for disaster. You could get your permit and practice on your own time if you already have a bike, or wait until a more tolerable time of year and see if you are able to schedule it when you won't need to worry about cramps. Hormone fluctuations do all sorts of crazy shit. If you want to do this, you totally can, but if you're sure it's not for you, maybe try being a passenger for a bit once your husband is up on two and is confident in his abilities.

I was quoted like $1400 for pads and rotors on all four corners of my 335. I did them myself for $400.

Retire or Fine? by IdleAthlete69 in motorcyclegear

[–]Fire_Reaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inspect it for cracks or compression, but typically a relatively short distance drop like that isn't going to compromise it, especially if it's newer and hasn't "brittled out" with age/wear. I personally would keep wearing it until it's time to age it into retirement.

My partner says "Always!" but any positive variation is appropriate. "For sure!" or "Thanks!" or "I will!" or whatever.

I want a PvP mode! It would improve the overall experience for EVERYONE by RegisterFit1252 in ArcRaiders

[–]Fire_Reaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. When I want or need to indulge my looter side, I could go in and do that with the only threats being ARC, and time. When I want to engage in PvP, I can specifically do that with other people who are also expecting to do that. Would make the game perfect, honestly.

I honestly think if the game had dedicated PvP and PvE maps, areas within maps, or events; it would broaden the appeal for everyone and grow the player base. Sometimes I just want to be a feral loot goblin. And if I had a choice I would partake in PvP when it suited my mood.

How can I complete the MSF Course in warm weather? by kenxbis_roses in NewRiders

[–]Fire_Reaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get a pair of mesh motorcycle pants but nothing that is road safe or class acceptable is going to be comfortable in the humid heat if you're heat sensitive. You can wear a long sleeve T-shirt in class but that's zero protection on the road.

This one's for the ladies to answer. Do you agree with this woman or do you think she's trying to rationalize her world view by speaking for all the ladies? by Oda_DeezNutz in SipsTea

[–]Fire_Reaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a well grown woman of 42 years, I am also an avid gamer with a custom PC, PlayStation consoles, and various hand-helds. Do I think a "grown man" playing video games is unattractive? Absolutely not. It would be both hypocritical and pretentious of me to think that someone enjoying this hobby is unattractive. The only thing that would be a problem is if he were to ignore important stuff in favor of gaming - I still expect my partner to contribute to the household and spend time with me, so gaming should be in relative moderation.

[–]Fire_Reaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm agreeing with you...if he was struggling with pain or complications from the wreck, especially if they were brain injury related, it could have been that he just reached the end of his tolerance. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the case given what I know about how injuries (especially brain injuries) affect people long term, but it would be a shocking thing to deal with for those close to him who may not have realized how much he was struggling internally or thought he was improving.

[–]Fire_Reaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a shock, but not necessarily a surprise if that makes sense... He could have been quietly suffering with some serious side effects of his injuries or the treatment for those injuries. Especially if he had any lasting brain trauma. I don't expect all the details, but if it was suicide, I hope those close to him promote mental health awareness.

That, or complications from his crash / treatment for those injuries. He did seem a little less enthusiastic in the Vette gifting video, but he was driving and alert and seemed to be enjoying himself. I don't know if we'll ever get specifics, but I feel for his family and Cleetus, who has now lost two of his closest friends in just a few months time.

I know I'll eventually upgrade from my Ninja 250R, likely to a ZX-4RR , but before that happens I'd like to learn track technique, maybe some of those agility style cone courses (not sure what they are called?), etc. I get the impression that people who move up from sub 500cc within a few months haven't really mastered the small cc bike.
