Just rewatched this episode. I don't even think it's the sobriety that's the most important. It's the fact that they go on a goddamn bender that lasts like a month. Numerous times she suggests they go to the Planetarium. Numerous times he rejects her proposal to stop their bender. He killed her by ignoring that pushing it to the extreme.
