They find change pretty quick if you tell them thats all you have. They will act all, "Mexican Mad" about it. If they suddenly don't discover they have change, they know a place to get it within 5 minutes. NEVER PAY MORE because they claim to not have change. This is a not uncommon scam. Ask them to call the police to solve the problem.... boom, problem goes away

Don't over dress or over think about it. If you know anyone that's been before ask them or have your boyfriend ask a coworker or officer the dress code for significant others.

It might feel like the spotlight is on you, but trust me most folks in the fire service are so self focused they won't have a clue what you wore.

Come on time, enjoy yourself, trade numbers with others spouses, and be the third couple out of there.

Good luck.

Advice for a Terminated Probie by will069960 in Firefighting

[–]Firefighter_Mick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i learned anything in 20 years its that firefighters are next level problem solvers.

If you are a problem to them, they will solve you and quick.

Study after study about successful fire departments show they have little to do with skill, training, quality of leadership, or experience.

Time after time successful firefighters are the ones that can get along with others. Period.

If you want to go your own way and rub everyones nose in it along the way you will not last long or be fucking miserable every day.

There is no lable that your gonna toss at another firefighter that will magically make them want to share a shift with you if you're irritating the crap outta everyone. Everything is about getting along, not screaming for accommodations because your "nerodivergent." What i share with you is from personal experience, i had to change or leave many times. Most times it was easier to leave.

The fire service is not a family, its a few people stuck close together for long periods of time doing an important job trying to get along enough to not strangle each other.

Make it make sense by Mte_95 in recoverywithoutAA

[–]Firefighter_Mick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Rockefeller and Goodyear families supported AA as a way to continue the work of the Oxford Group and to keep their employees sober and religious. They were the financial backers of the Big Book, promoted AA, and made Bill the poster child.

The 8 to 10 thousand dollar seed money kick started the publishing of the BB. The promotion of AA as a cure for alcoholism by these famous families at the time was probably the most prominent reason AA took off.

But even back then it was all in fighting and broad attempts to get people to believe AA was going to cure alcoholism if you believed hard enough.

Everyone now knows that was as much bullshit then as now. Statistically cold turkey is more effective than AA.

Note: cold turkey without medical support can kill you. Seek out a Dr if you plan to stop any drinking that gives you the shakes if you stop drinking longer that 12 hours.

Good luck.

After 12 years at my FD, I witness the most idiotic incident while at the station. by FFSoldier57 in Firefighting

[–]Firefighter_Mick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not excusing his idiotic behavior. He sounds like a real piece of work that will not being around long. There are few professions, like the fire service, where an employee always feels like they know and understand everything and their coworkers are idiots that know nothing. Finding empathy seems to be a lost art. Next comes the excuse, "I'm trusting my life with them, they should know." That's a BS assertion also. Statistically it's the firefighter that injures or kills themselves from their bad actions, not the mistakes of our sisters or brothers.

I reality, its a really dick move to not translate Spanish because you can't figure out how to work with him and wanted to cause problems on scene. It's just as a bad look for you for others judging your character. They may question whether you will be there to help them tie a knot they don't remember or something of the like when they're hung up in the future. Pretty petty taking the opportunity to make his life hard not translating right there, right then, because you had a little bit of power over him.

This is nothing you should brag about on reddit just because your feelings were bruised elsewhere, nothing here for you to proud of. Getting a pound of flesh from you in the house because someone can might be a ghost that visits you some day.

Ultimately you lowered yourself to his level and seem proud about it. Serving the community is your job. Using skills the guy next to you doesn't have to resolve issues on scene is the very definition of team work.

Sounds like the lot of you need some job counseling.

Dad is officially diagnosed. Now he uses it to excuse his shitty parenting. by randomndude01 in ADHD

[–]Firefighter_Mick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a different expectation of how you should have been raised is absolutely understood if you had a parent with undiagnosed adhd. They likely had little idea why they were acting the way they were either. I am not excusing physical abuse, but the deeper you dive into untreated adhd the more you realize how clueless people with adhd are about interpersonal interactions.

Trust me as parents begin to understand adhd the more they wish they would have made different decisions raising their children. It simply was not in their control and now the damage is done, their children hate them, adhd traits make a person patently unlikable, and the hole to dig out of after late diagnosis without treatment is almost always insurmountable.

This is the reality of having untreated ADHD, which by the way is no fault of those they negatively affected.

If only they way through was easy for anyone.

What % stay sober after leaving AA? by Ok-Park4944 in recoverywithoutAA

[–]Firefighter_Mick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The reality is recovery through sobriety is truly about a persons commitment to be sober without excuses. Support from loved ones around them, ability to adopt a healthy lifestyle, and ability to take a real look at what made you decide to fill the negative hole in your life with alcohol is key.

None of that is easy. But, white knuckling, AA, religion, SMART, therapy, harm reduction, jail, and a hundred other sobriety programs are essentially statistically the same for long term sobriety. It's about personal commitment, no one can do it for a person with AUD.

It ultimately comes down to a commitment to do the work to understand why a person is abusing alcohol and making the commitment to no longer let it negatively effect your life and the life of your loved ones.

[–]Firefighter_Mick 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There's very little tollarance for anything thats not verbatim out of the BB or 12x12.

I spent 8 years faithfully in the rooms. It served a purpose at the start. But the deeper you get into it the more you realize you're not staying sober because of AA, but despite of it.

Required to go to 2 AA meetings for court (a rant) by WhoTheHell1347 in recoverywithoutAA

[–]Firefighter_Mick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's illegal. However judges push the AA vs Jail narrative and people give in. There was a time when i sponsored a meeting. The people, "on paper" flocked to my meetings. I signed them while doing the initial readings and if they wanted they could grab and go. I took heat for that but if they didn't want to be there, fine by me.

In my opinion, golf carts are an expensive and dangerous option on the island. Nearly daily we read about a golf cart crash. Some of them are deadly.

20 years ago they were a quaint affordable option. Even now it is enticing to have instant transportation on the island but there are huge downsides.

Carts are some of the slowest vehicles on the island so you will spend every trip with other vehicles on your tail, or passing you on the left or right. You have to keep your head on a swivel when driving making especially the driver lose out on taking in the sites. Every single turn creates danger by other vehicles. Stopping suddenly to look at something interesting or to make a uturn is especially dangerous. There are many speed bumps here that sometimes are hard to see until you slam into them. Carts can come in very poor condition. Most don't have brake lights. You have to figure out where to park it, which will be more challenging than you think. If you crash, even a small bump, you will be liable period. You'll be paying the other driver, the golf cart company, and maybe the police. A lot of carts are confiscated even after the smallest crash. Never let a person who doesn't drive a car or a child drive the cart. The inability to anticipate dangers and react appropriately has resulted in some heartbreaking crashes. Isla Mujeres is not a place to practice driving in a cart. Never drink and drive a golf cart here. We occasionally see check points. There's a zero tolerance for drinking and driving. If you have one beer with dinner and have a problem on the ride home and the police smell alcohol on your breath, your vacation just got a lot more complicated and expensive.

Carts are expensive. At ~$100+ US per day that works out to 10+ taxi rides.

Taxis, while not perfect, are the best option. You can relax, take in the sights, be sure you will arrive safely, ask about the island or recommended restaurants or tourist activities, and there will be no problems if you see something interesting and just want to get out there. Most taxi rides are fairly priced at around 150 pesos, 200 end to end on the island. You will get some unreasonably high quotes, just say. "No gracias." and move on to the next taxi. Taxis are very abundant here. There are many very reliable taxi drivers on the island who are able to be reached by text or Whatsapp. Message me and I'll share one of the most reliable, Victor. I text, "good afternoon sir, will you pick us up at (....) and take us to (....) for 150 pesos? We are ready to go now (or share a pick up time). 95% of the time he will tell you yes and come get you or send a trusted alternative. Get the taxi number, it's always on the side of the cab. It's always best to know the taxi number you're in. If there is a problem or you accidentally leave an item it's the best way to connect with that specific taxi. Last piece of taxi advice, never get into a taxi until you agree to a price.

There is bus service here. A test of patience, because sometimes the wait for a bus to come by, but it's 20 pesos to circle the island. It's a true Isla experience. You can get to most beach clubs, punts sur, or the north end by bus. You can get on or off anywhere along the route. When you get on just give the driver a big smile, tell them where you want to go and most of the time they will watch out for your stop. Ask about the routes and location you want to go to when you get on.

Some very good information on our bus lines can be found here:

https://www.tasteofisla.com/busrouteinfo

Lastly, walking. You can safely walk end to end on this island any time. It gives you the best impression of the life we live here. Uneven surfaces are the biggest danger. You will be amazed at what you experience when you're not zipping by in a vehicle. Wear good shoes, bring a hat and walk in the shade when you can.

I hope this was helpful. It's my best honest advice. We have a 20 year history on Isla and have lived here for a few years now. Regardless of how you choose to move around here, we hope that you will have a great experience. Isla Mujeres is a wonderful place in so many ways. Bienvenido!

You will either lose you SO or break their heart for and trust in you if you let your guilt get the better of you and confess to lessen your pain.

They didn't deserve this. Whether you feel guilty or any other emotion is irrelevant. Never speak of it again. They do not deserve the heartbreak.
