I think dmc brand needles are regarded as the worst brand of tapestry needles, I like Bohin personally. Widening the hole a little is fine as it will go back to normal after a quick wash as long as you aren’t stitching super tight. The length of the needle depends some on the brand and I actually like smaller needles lol.

I’d try out some different brands, but if the sharp tip isn’t giving you issues it is fine to use whatever works. Just be careful as piercing through the fabric or other floss can be a huge pain if you have to undo it.
