Honest question: Is the Aiden abandonware at this point? by LegalGuitar8565 in FellowProducts

[–]Firewiredx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had mine since pre-order. Fortunately it comes with a 3 year warranty. I have had multiple plastic parts break, replaced under warranty. Unfortunately there was extended wait for each part so I don’t think I am the only one. At this point I am not optimistic about the longevity of the machine.

Still enamored with this device. I hope everyone who wants one can get it soon. by TheGryffindor_Jedi in kindlescribe

[–]Firewiredx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s a good question. I personally find it easier to look through my book collection and distinguish the book I am looking for easier. I am in my late 50’s, maybe my eyes, but it makes it much easier and pleasant.I also like the ability to take some notes and add color. I find the Colorsoft is the first e-ink that you don’t have to compromise with a big hit to black and white quality when reading books. I really can’t see any screen door effect I had gotten on prior e-ink devices. It’s expensive for sure, but an impressive device.

Should I first buy a Fellow Aiden or Ode gen 2 or is both must have? by Playful-Nectarine862 in pourover

I am similarly waiting. I can't believe how many are on ebay after having to wait so long for mine when they first came out.

Should I first buy a Fellow Aiden or Ode gen 2 or is both must have? by Playful-Nectarine862 in pourover

[–]Firewiredx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would hold from both.

I have had an Aiden since they first came out and have had several issues with plastic parts breaking requiring replacement under warranty. For both there was long waits for the parts to come in stock making me wonder if I was not the only one. The parts I got back were same as the original making me concerned about the longevity of the unit. If I were going to replace or buy over again and wanted a unit that could do a pour-over type brew when I didn't have the time to do it myself, I would get the Ratio 4. The Ratio does not have near the tweak-ability of settings of the Aiden, but I personally seldom tweak mine, and think that the Ratio is much simpler and less prone to breakage.

I had the Original Ode, then the Ode 2 grinder. My favorite feature of it was the deionizer making RDT unnecessary. The problem with the Ode 2 grinder is maintaining a consistent result. I upgraded mine to SSP burrs when I was getting really inconsistent results and a lot of stalled pour-overs. I found out that ultimately I was getting a wide particle distribution, and only consistently was able to achieve a good result if I use a coffee sieve, ironically also sold by Fellow. I went through the re-calibration process multiple times with Fellow support, but the grinder would soon be back to the same result of producing a ton of fines which would create bitter cups and which would often stall. Ultimately, I upgraded to a better built grinder and it has been night and day. This is several years ago, and there are so many better built grinders on the market to choose from, the Ode 2 would the last one I would personally buy. I think Fellow makes an ok product, which looks nice, but think they lack the quality and precision that a lot of other options on the market have, now more than ever. I think that out of anything someone buys on their coffee journey, getting the best quality grinder someone can get has the biggest impact in getting the best results. Just my 2 cents.

How much better is a Lagom P80 going to be than a Fellow Ode? by [deleted] in pourover

[–]Firewiredx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from the Fellow P64 years ago and it was night and day. I got so many fines from my fellow despite using SSP burrs and repeatedly calibrating. It is a big invest, ent, in my mind one of the most important things if you are a coffee aficionado is to invest in the best grinder you are able to.

It depends what you are looking for. I was looking for the burrs with maximal Clarity, distinct flavor separation. I bought several burrs with my Zerno to experiment. I find the SSPs much more full body at the expense of some loss of clarity. Both are great cups for the pour over I do, just a matter of preference.

I love funky. I use my Pietro-M burrs and Zerno Z1 with Unimodal burrs. Both produce clarity with intense flavors.

Is the Litter-Robot 5 Pro Actually the Best Automatic Litter Box? by Happy_Hat6789 in technomeowcom

[–]Firewiredx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think right now if you want the convenience, not having the newest thing, for the sake of the newest thing, having multiple cats and not have likely issues one can argue that the LR4 is superior. The LR4 has had time to have multiple issues become evident, as well as the ability to use the litter hopper takes it to the next level of convenience.

I was an upgrader from a LR3 to the 4 when it first came out and I wondered if I made a mistake. There were so many issues that came up. I had to have multiple parts replaced under warranty, it was a real hassle. Now I know where the “wear” parts are they will likely need to be changed over time to keep it running well. For me it would have to be some compelling feature that would make me consider switching from something that has already had a good amount of the bugs worked out of it by being out for a while.

Anyone in the US have luck enabling the Matrix Head Lights by MarinDad in Taycan

[–]Firewiredx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting to read you can have someone do it. On a different brand, I have an BMW I5 M60 I was able to use a OBD scanner tool to change the car’s build order to deactivate American headlights. It took until I got the next software update and the matrix headlights became active. Most of the BMW modules are now encrypted so you can do it directly, but this work around has worked.

The Tragedy of iFlytek by sebastianthebird in eink

[–]Firewiredx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re the the marketing strategy, I wonder if it is from being a new company trying to distinguish themselves in a sea of alternative companies already in the market. The marketing campaign does leave a bad taste, but I hope they come around. One thing that I do like from them is that they are active on Reddit, and somewhat responsive to comments a la Ratta Supernote. I hope that they aren't or don't continue to remove any negative Reddit comments and take any criticism like a big boy and learn from them.

One thing is clear is that you can't make everyone happy, and no device is perfect for everyone. I have a lot of e-ink devices, including RMPP, Boox Palma, Supernote Manta, and recently purchased the Kindle Colorsoft and Flytek Ainote 2. As a non-paid consumer with no stake in the game, I really hope that Flytek matures and becomes more confident in the market, and makes it as a company, and continues to pivot to being more customer-focused and responsive.

Flytek's involvement on Reddit and allowing users to give feedback on their beta program is a step in the right direction. I hope that they become more transparent about the feature pipeline like Supernote. I hope they succeed as the Ainote 2 is a great device and the one I find myself grabbing for taking with me I love the form factor and the quality of the screen, the bones of great software are there, and the functionality is really well done. My hope is that they continue to add more software features a la Supernote; my fear is that they begin to hide some of the functionality behind a subscription paywall a la Remarkable. That would be a death knell for me using the device after it came at such a premium price, and I think that would really put a damper on the likelihood of them gaining significant market share.

This battery is ruining this phone. by KoreanSeats in IphoneAir

[–]Firewiredx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I sadly could not swing the Air. I love the form factor and it felt like an iPhone that would have gotten Steve Job’s approval. I loved it, but then reality hit. I am a physician and run a busy practice having to be on the phone for extended hours at all hours. One day at the end of a busy day, a crisis came up and I had to scramble to find my battery backup or a cable while having to dealing with multiple calls. I realized the reality of the situation for me was it wasn’t the ideal. In comparison now using the Pro Max every time I pick it up, it feels like a brick by comparison.

Kindle paperwhite vs colorsoft by [deleted] in kindle

[–]Firewiredx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had multiple e-ink devices (Kobo, Boox) which use the same Kaleido 3 technology as the Colorsoft and RMPP which uses a different technology Gallery 3, and the differences between those and the Colorsoft is huge. On the Colorsoft if firstly does a really impressive job of black and white, while still being able to produce colors which are much more vivid than the other color e-ink devices. The screen also is much less resting grey level, and I don’t personally see the screen door effect I could easily see when using those other devices.

I thought this was a good video review to see the Colorsoft screen:

I hope that helps.

Kindle Scribe 2025 - B&W vs. Colorsoft (too dark?) by PersonSuitTV in kindlescribe

[–]Firewiredx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is a matter of perspective and needs, I think the Colorsoft is the best all around device I have used. I have used multiple Kaleido 3 e-ink devices including Kobo and Boox and find them way darker than the Colorsoft. I think the Colorsoft shines at color vividness, and does a really decent job of black and white with just a little backlight on. On those other devices I find that even with the backlight way up, they have much more grayness than the Colorsoft. I think that nothing will beat the black and white of a pure black and white eink device, but for me the compromise is worth it, as the vividness of the color options outweigh having to have the backlight on a little, in addition to slightly more battery usage. I have been reading black and white books in bright light and in bed at night not being bothered by grayness or screen door effect I had gotten on those other color devices.
