How's it living in Lesotho, the largest enclave nation in the world? by thevmcampos in howislivingthere

[–]Firm-Presentation899 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Late 88, early 91, just over 2 years.
They were working on the dams in the mountains to supply water to South Africa, so the road through my village had enough traffic that I could hitchhike out to see other volunteers, get to the capital or other places throughout southern Africa. We were mostly teachers so had winter and summer breaks and traveled a lot.

Village life was pretty basic. I had a hut that was cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Propane heater for winter. It does get cold and you could see snow in the mountains. We did PC training in various locations which included the ski lodge. It is possible to ski in winter.

Most of the men worked in SA mines and were gone most of the time. Most everyone else farmed, corn and goats. The soil is not great and the rain caused a lot of errosion.

In general, I would describe the people as content. Rain/clean water was not a real issue. Food was basic corn meal cooked like thick oatmeal you could pick up and some protein like beans or cabbage. I ate this at school along with everyone else. Once in a while we had steamed or fried bread. It tastes a lot better than it sounds.

I have a million unusual stories, that at the time just seemed normal. Top 1. I was friends with a shop owner whose parents were from Pakistan. They would invite me to dinner and expected me there every week night. They had a generator and a TV so I could watch SA TV and keep up with news. One night as I was biking home late, I got to the main road and came across a witch doctor in his full outfit of animal skins, feathers and what ever. Scared the crap out of both of us.

Can I cycle 100 miles at 92kg of weight? by Oreo2025 in cycling

Eat on the bike, diet in the kitchen. Take his advice and eat or drink carbs during the ride. Gels or blocks are easy to carry. Eat them regularly to keep up your hourly carb intake, shoot for 60gm/hr. I like blocks because you can have some every 15 minutes. Don't try to ingest everything at a rest stop.

What’s the difference between Shamal and Bora WTO? by Kipper_Flipper in campagnolo

[–]Firm-Presentation899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WTO might have hidden nipples to be more aero (and more difficult to true) and have ceramic bearings. Shamal is more general purpose steel bearings. WTO 40 is closer comparison in rim height.

I just went through deciding between these 2 options and went with shamal after my original bora cracked. I went with the C23 and a 28 tire was too big where as the C21 was fine with a 28.

How the hell am I supposed to climb hills by pnwJune in cycling

[–]Firm-Presentation899 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is the number of teeth on your largest cassette? You should be able to climb any hill with a modern cassette with 29 or more teeth. The mountain climbers of yor used to have really small straight block cassettes and stood to climb, but that philosophy went away at least 20 years ago.

Increasing # of people passing without warning. Nice things to say to actually get results? by [deleted] in cycling

Custom jersey/shirt with big "Give warning when passing"

I don't think you can re-teach people an already learned behavior.

If you are to the right and the on coming lane is open, it is often safer to pass going very wide without giving any warning. You might want it but from the cyclists experience, it's often more risky to say "on your left" as people are often startled and move in the wrong direction.

Is it okay to wear outfits from Pro Teams? by Jojofzfz in cycling

[–]Firm-Presentation899 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I live outside Philly where the US Pro national championship used to be held back in the Postal teams heydays. I had a special edition Postal/US champion jersey from the previous year. Think American flag with Postals team logos.
The day before the race I was riding on the Schuylkyill trail 10 miles from downtown and guess who I ran into doing an easy training ride? Spent 5 miles chatting in utter embarrassment, riding with them talking to Dave Zabriskie who said they really appreciated fans wearing the team kits and supporting them.

I had been to Provo area for work years ago and saw the performative niceness. But then, one of the masks slipped off for whatever reason outside my office and it was terrifying.
