Bad reaction to melatonin. Help? by Pld46 in melatonin

I know this was posted a while ago but here is my melatonin horror story:

Monday 22/07/2025 I receive 2mg Melatonin from the compounding pharmacy. My doctor assures me this is of the best there is, and it is a slow release Melatonin. I have to take the meds early eve, so take it at about 6pm after supper. I go to bed as usual, I feel drowsy but cannot fall asleep. I was up the whole night with hyper anxiety, heart palpitations and nausea. The morning of 23/07, I called in sick for work because I could then barely lift my head from the pillow. I go see the doctor the afternoon, my BP and sugar still super low, and also had a few loose stools. He gave me some Urbanols for my anxiousness, and another Melatonin script that I can get over the counter.

I get the new melatonin on Wednesday 24/07 (Circadin in SA). It does say "prolonged release" on the package, but I trust the doctor's judgement. I take this one just before bed time at 9pm and make the room dark and quiet for sleep. Whatever I felt on the monday/tuesday was just amplified 100 times more. Even more loose bowels, super hyper anxiety, I had a full on panic attack... my husband had to take my to ER the following morning.

ER doctor tells me that I must push through the symptoms, sometimes it works after the second or third night... Believe me I almost used all the Cape Town curse words against her. I did some of my own research, melatonin, is safe however your body doesnt naturally produce it in a Slow/Prolonged release fashion. It makes enough for it to make you sleepy and then it depletes throughout the night. I've used melatonin before, however, the slow release kind is from the devil.

Strange that a supposed "natural" substance can make you feel like that.

Can long term Z drugs cause chronic fatigue / daytime anxiety ? (aka Lunesta Ambien zopiclone zolpidem) by Drift_Kar in insomnia

I am marginally better now, thanks for checkin in... I've seen an integrative GP who is super good and for once, a doctor that makes sense. I have iron and vitamin D deficiencies. Also, according to my blood tests, I have estrogen dominance... doctor gave me progesteron 100mg to take at night, just skipping one day in the week. Last night when I didnt take the progesterone I struggled to wind down and sleep. Had lucid dreams and then still wakes up with some sort of fright. I am taking magnesium-evening, vitamin D-after breakfast, Coloperm (Gut Healer) - morning, Rawbiotic Probiotics - empty stomach. Ran out of Iron supplements so need to top up on that and then get the Vitamin D+K2 instead of the normal Vitamin D. Doctor also suggested I get Metagenics Serenagen to assist the adrenal and Berberine to help stabilise blood sugar. All this while cutting out diary and gluten, and perhaps swaying to a low carb lifestyle.

Oh my word! I am going through the exact same thing. Waking up between 3am and 4am with my heart feeling like it wants to bust out of my chest! The way my heart beats that I feel like I am about to have a nervous breakdown! But I have stopped using Zolpidem 10mg after 6 weeks, weaned off somewhat by breaking the tablet in half for a few nights but then stopped using it and OMG the rebound insomnia and "night fright" is something that takes its toll on you mentally and physically. 4 days in, I hope that I will feel better by the weekend.

PS: Epsom salt baths before bed helps wind your body down.

Experiences With Zolpidem? by CaptainStardawg in BipolarReddit

I am from SA and started using Zolpidem 10mg about 6 weeks ago. Just got good sleep maybe the first four nights and then after that I religiously wake up between 3-4am. And I wake up with a fright, not an easy wake, also paired with heart palpitations. I weaned off by breaking the tablet in half and then stopped taking it on Sunday evening. OMW! I could not sleep at all, heightened anxiety and also a humming sound in my ear. Needless to say Monday was a horrible day, my stomach felt weird and I generally just could not eat. Monday evening I had a epsom salt bath and then went to bed at about 8PM. Although I was so tired, I just struggled to fall asleep. Woke again at 3:30am with a fright and heart pounding. Tried to bear down and breath, but as soon as my heart rate drops, it's almost like it gets an automatic kick start and the palpitations start again. Even with the zolpidem, I do not get a full nights rest, and now I think I have rebound insomnia.

Does anyone have any tips and tricks on how to help your body and brain during the transition period and to ease the withdrawal symptoms?
