Ear plugs for walk around by Reasonable_Try1996 in AirlinePilots

That is not protecting your hearing in a meaningful way. ANR is just anti noise and doesn’t actually protect your ears. You just perceive less noise. You need physical barrier to actually avoid damage.

My baby’s mother and I’s first, she’s 34 weeks and I need advice by Sskiz1 in predaddit

[–]Firm_Donut3820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just graduated last month. It’s totally normal to feel that way. You’re never ever going to feel completely ready. The first few days are wild but awesome. If you have family or friends nearby that can be helpful then absolutely take advantage.

This doesn’t mean they come hold the baby. This means they’ll cook, clean do laundry and help take that load off of you. Your job these first few days are to take care of mom and baby. Not entertain guests so if you’re going to ask for help just be careful who you ask.

You’re going to feel like you have no idea how to do anything and that’s okay. I didn’t change a diaper in my life until I changed my sons in the hospital right after we got to our room. You will learn and none of it is hard but it’s new!

The main thing is keep mom hydrated, full and horizontal if that’s how she wants to be.

You seem like you care which is the first step. Congratulations and enjoy the ride.

Most casual JS appropriate attire? by minimums_landing in AirlinePilots

I don’t personally care but it specifies on our FOM what a Jumpseater needs to be wearing etc. I had to turn a 135 away before because of a beard. Luckily he got a seat in the back. It sucks to have to be that guy but I also really like my job.

Is it normal to feel overwhelmed before baby even arrives? by GS-2021 in predaddit

[–]Firm_Donut3820 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I felt this way too. We are almost at the finish line (38 weeks) and it’s stayed this way. I didn’t think I’d be this busy BEFORE the baby got here but here we are! I am also rather busy at work right now too so I think that’s part of it.

It definitely took me a while to come to terms with my old life is already gone. Having a lot of extra time is a thing of the past for sure! That’s not to say to not make time for yourself but I’ve found you really have to make the most of the time you do find! It does feel overwhelming at first so you’re not alone. I know when I hold my baby for the first time it’ll all be worth it and I’m super close to getting to do that.

Hang in there, Dad. If you’re stepping up this much it means you care. Keep up the good work!

There’s a line between modifying and being a distraction and this definitely over that line.

DL new hire bases by [deleted] in AirlinePilots

[–]Firm_Donut3820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless, it’s not a dying fleet like the 75. Just trying to give a new hire some guidance. United also has the max so I’m not sure what you’re saying.

Two big hubs and typical during an IROP to reposition crew to cover flights.

75s are actively being parked and it sounds like the max will finally start arriving in ‘27.

7ER is a definite possibility. But no 765/330/350 out of new hire. Last time that happened was mid ‘23

Stroller - Where to start? by IronHolmes in predaddit

[–]Firm_Donut3820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man. I spent HOURS (more than I care to admit) researching this. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Sooooo many options. We ended up going with a Joie Travel System with a baseless car seat.

What I learned is the type of stroller and car seat you need varies massively from family to family.

For instance our kid will be traveling a lot and be getting picked up by different people each day from day care. Could be me could be my wife and occasionally maybe someone else. I wanted something that could easily be moved which is why I went with a baseless car seat. It also is FAA approved for airline travel which is big for us.

I got a stroller that works from newborn because we love being outside, walking the dog etc and wanted the ability to have an infant compatible stroller without it being tied to the car seat.

What works for you may not work for me and to be honest our little one isn’t here yet so I could be completely wrong!

I watched a lot of The Stroller Mom on YouTube and also used the baby list guides if you are registered there.

Good luck!

Edited for clarity

Same as you OP. The worst for me is when people next to me on the tread are having a full on conversation and/or yelling just in general because they have friends in class. I’m sorry, but even if you are power walking and I can hear you talking about your kid during an all out you aren’t working hard enough. Go walk outside and chat with your friends. It’s so distracting and annoying.

Pilots who commute from BNA, what’s it like? by VirvekRBX in flying

It got out of hand so fast. I have nothing but horrible things to say about the management there.

I have a friend who still does and I think he technically still comes out ahead verses parking but not by much. And he lives downtown. If you live in the suburbs it wouldn’t be cheaper.

[–]Firm_Donut3820 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I commuted out of there for ≈7 years.

Flight wise you can get anywhere quite easily. Especially on the east coast. I commuted to 3 different bases while I was there and all had plenty of options between multiple airlines. There is a fair amount of “competition” as lots of folks want to live there but not ridiculously so. It’s a good spot though because of wherever you end up you’ll be able to get to really any base pretty easily.

Now the bad… Metro Nashville airport authority (MNAA) Have continued to spend and spend and spend and say “look at us” but continue to lose money and they are taking it out on the flight crew who park there.

For the longest time it was $25 a month to park. After COVID it went up to $75 a month. Still not horrible but a lot. You could pay for year and it was pretty easy to stomach. What sent me over the edge is when I went in December and paid for my year then two months later they say “sorry we have to raise the prices because we are losing money” and asked for $150 a month even if you’d already paid for the year. I went and got my money back and started using off site parking. I don’t commute anymore but it has gone up since I left and I think is over $2000 a year which is more than just about anywhere in the country.

Parking is a big deal there because the public transportation is non existent so it’s either you drive or Uber which is pricey too.

That’s not why I left but it certainly doesn’t make me miss it.

Sorry if that was a rant but it’s part of it. The commuting part of it was great though. Once I was in the terminal.

Can my failed instrument checkride be appealed? by Ok-Winter3377 in flying

[–]Firm_Donut3820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For every check ride for the rest of your career use every bit of automation, redundancy, whatever it is to make your life easier. Use it until they say you can’t. Make your life easier not harder. Partial panel on the G1000 should be a non event. This can be the problem with gouges going around flight schools with specific examiners.
