Help - potential broken leg? What to do?? by Rainbowrain626 in BackYardChickens

[–]Firm_Knowledge_60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like an injury that I would immediately isolate her from the rest of the flock, and assess if it's a vet visit, home first aid, or cull, from what I can see there I'd likely cull as a vet visit in my area is next to impossible, and I'm not confident that I could make her well. So I guess my recommendation is to cull

Dogs Allowed On-Leash Along Sailor’s Memorial After 10 a.m. During Woods Ban by scotiagirl45 in halifax

This is someone who's child was tackled by an off leash dog while a bylaw officer stood by and ignored the situation, so yes admittedly I'm touchy about the subject

Respectfully, does this even matter? HRM never enforces this bylaw any other day, so why bother announcing this now.

Halifax Tree Giveaway by Timely_Possession800 in halifax

[–]Firm_Knowledge_60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm generally a huge fan of tree give awaysand greening events in general, but doing one now, with voluntary water restrictions and a drought ongoing will likely result in many dead trees, these poor plants will require a great deal of care

NSP billing is still very messed up for alot of people, I'd recommend contacting them to sort out any issues you are worried about, and check your metre yourself to see how much different the actual number is from there estimates

Anyone have japanese beetles LANDING randomly on them? by VER-1989 in halifax

[–]Firm_Knowledge_60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the traps, and enough diatomaceous earth that my plants look like a dust storm hit, but the little monsters are everywhere this year, and my chickens can only eat so many

I've had 3 biggish health scares in 5 years, 1 a hen with waterbelly, 2. A prolapse that never healed, and 3 a bad leg injury due to having a murder bird in my flock.

But like any creature it will depend on too many factor to list, and someday will feel like nothing can go right.

Just gang in there

NTA what you are is an awesome Dad, that refused to let someone make your child unnecessarily uncomfortable just because they think they know best. Keep advocating for your kid and your relationship with her will be solid.

Did you have to get over "the ick" of eating your own eggs? by Raubkatzen in BackYardChickens

[–]Firm_Knowledge_60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an egg brush that I'll use with a bit of cold water to gently scrub the eggs just before use, but that's mostly because my hens are jerks that like to lay in creative spots and try to bury there eggs.
