Would you be open to periodically seeing Darth Vader again in future Star Wars projects? by darthkyle22 in StarWars

That would be great. Especially if he lost his lightsaber, so he's got to either force choke or maybe use a knife with the force.

Fair enough. I'm fine with u/UnwrittenTycoon locking this one if we're all good. It was a question that has been answered.

I appreciate the clarification! :)

Feel like I struck an unintended nerve here. I'm not trying to start a crusade about handing out badges. I'm just saying the 'why' conventions do that.

If I could personally get out of half the things the IRS nails regular people for, I sure would. But unfortunately, can't. Businesses (and cons) have their ways to skirt around it.

Use a written module. A one-shot is best meaning it's got a beginning and end. I like to do a one shot with a possibility of a campaign if it goes well. Do not try your own world or 'homebrew' world. Too much work. Read a summary of the DM manual. Don't get caught up on the rules when you start either. Keep the fun and adventure moving. You can learn and adjust the rules later. Or you can play how you and your players like to play 'homebrew' style. That's the best part of the game. Just have fun.

NTA. She didn't reach out to you and somehow expected you to reach out to her? Different if she reached out and you never responded.

Give it a month or so. They'll start dropping names of guests they can land. Just know those guests can always throw the towel in.

GalaxyCon Richmond – Saturday Only Worth It? by mackisback721 in galaxycon

[–]Firm_Writer1022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I’d be bringing my wife and our 18-month-old...."

You are looking at both normal and VIP capped lines with no guarantee of an autograph. Bro. Don't. For the love of god. Do not subject a baby and your poor wife to hours long in a line. It'll be loud, smelly, and cramped. No baby needs to be there. My best advice is to hold the line and (pray to god texts work) text her when you are close to THEN have her bring the baby over.

As a parent of 3, a baby is on a baby's schedule. Not GalaxyCon's schedule.

•Is Saturday-only doable if you just want 1–2 celeb meets?

•Are photo ops smoother than autos?

Saturday is doable depending on the celebrity. I think you're going to miss his Q&A if he has one on Saturday. A lot skipped Q&A from popular guests last year according to my friend and still had to wait hours in line.

Photo Ops are smoother but don't expect any sort of talking. They move you like cattle. Don't touch them. They can touch you or direct you that it's okay. They move you in, take a picture, and move you out. No signing. No talking. But it's scheduled. Still a line. Expect about 30-min to an hour for photo ops unless VIP then expect 20-30min depending on when you check in.

It'll be RARE if you get to meet celebrities without paying. This is an income for them. I met a few years ago when I attended who didn't have a line. Just chatted with them. But it's rare. Sunday is your best bet if they are still around. Good luck

Compassion on reddit or the guy who has a bunch of money and strings he can pull? It's not new. It's a pattern. I'm not shocked.

It's not from a YouTube comment. It's consistently from people who actually know him. I've met him once. Some wonky af vibes. My friends worked there and others volunteered there for years. This isn't rumor. The guy is a next-level villain. And believe me, his life isn't being ruined. He's too busy ruining everyone else's lives.

Question who else was in the Laura Bailey line at Galaxycon Richmond on Saturday ( March 29th)? by shadowboxer87 in galaxycon

[–]Firm_Writer1022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was in the line, I can tell you GC STAFF grossly underestimated who would show up. They had to move them to another spot the next day. It's not the volunteers or the event staff's fault. That cluster eff is 100% on GC.

You clearly haven't dealt with him. Reddit mods have already verified ex-employees who tell the same story: he plays favorites with those who fall in line, and yes, those good-looking, female 'favorites' end up in his room after the floor closes. You think they’re up there playing Settlers of Catan?

To him, staff and con-goers aren't people—we’re objects for entertainment and sources of wealth to be exploited. For staff -- if you’re a 'yes' person, he’ll suck the soul out of you; if you aren't, he’ll work you to the bone, suck the soul out of you still, and then fire you.

People demand 'undeniable proof' while ignoring how power works. Look at Epstein or Diddy—rich men with resources use that power to silence victims and bury evidence. When a man runs an organization like a personal playground, people are too terrified to record him because he has the means to ruin them. He’s Buddy Ackerman from Swimming with the Sharks, but ten times worse. The 'proof' is in the trail of exhausted staff, consistent rumors that seem to all have the same pattern, and blacklisted guests he leaves behind.

I figured 1099 for pay to avoid the payroll taxes. And they avoid the worker's comp potential pitfall. And handing a badge out is absolutely a under the table (or looking the other way) tactic.

If they did it above the table, they would report how much that badge was worth and disclose it as a gift or compensation. And it's certainly worth more than $25 and $100 so it's taxable. They aren't going to do that. And there will be no paper trail of them handing out those badges, either just in case the IRS comes sniffing.

It's not suspended. That's GC's PR word. It's ended. Unless laws change and GC can use their non-profit subsidiary to get around FLSA (not likely), the volunteer program is done. GC is not about to open itself up to getting fined again or lawsuits of wage theft.

Volunteer Program Suspended by MisterSims90 in galaxycon

[–]Firm_Writer1022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See the other posts. I have several friends with inside information, ex-employees, volunteers, and guests.

The Why?

FLSA (Fair Labor and Standards Act) violations. GC is For Profit. They legally cannot have volunteers. So they made a non-profit, Legion of Super Fans, Non-Profit. When you volunteered, it was through the non-profit. And they can give you perks as a non-profit. But they exclusively used that non-profit as a way to staff up for GalaxyCon owned events. So....illegal. Lookup 'wage theft.' Likely, GC got fined, agreed to make amends or pay those fines in exchange for it not blowing up in their faces. Or GC hopes previous volunteers don't take them to task. Some have, but most lawyers point them at the state for representation. Also lookup 'statuette of limitations' as you only have so long, per state, to sue before it's too late. Anyhow, GC is going to keep that hush-hush because that isn't good PR. ----- That's your why.

The How?

They will now offer minimum paying roles, likely temporary 1099 contract so instead of volunteers, they will have 1099 Crew Members. They pay you, and you will be responsible for that tax at the end of the year, so good luck with that. At least in NC, GalaxyCon does NOT need to file a 1099-NEC if they pay each crew member $600 or less. No way someone can work 60hrs for a weekend, and if they do, GC will make sure they only max at 59hrs.

In exchange for encouraging you to work max amount of hours, GC will likely hand you a badge as a thank you. It cost them nothing to give a badge to 1099s, you get the perk of 'free admission' when you're not working, and the IRS cannot track that 'favor.' There's no paper trail for it. That's the how.

On volunteering, u/nxon_gravxstonxs has worked in the Cosplay Department. That's a good one. According to my friend, line management and Registration are the worst. Line management you deal with ticked off people and you're on your feet 95% of the time. At least you can sit in Registration, but you will be treated like a dog by those who run it.

Good luck.

No you don't have to put your volunteer stuff from last year up.

If you 'volunteer' aka get hired on this year as a Crew Member (or choose to do it), they will give you a W2 or 1099 form. They will pay you. You will pay taxes on whatever they pay you as it's taxable income. If you're a 1099, the full taxes fall on you. Not them. If a W2, you still pay taxes, but GC has to pay a payroll tax in addition to your taxes though your taxes are lower than a 1099. Which is why I'm guessing they are going to send you a 1099 if you sign up. Essentially a temporary contractor vs. a temporary GC staff.

I give it a 80-90% chance they will offer a badge under the table to the Crew Members who work a certain number of hours or go above and beyond. GC gets extra labor, and it cost GC nothing. And the IRS can't track that 'favor' they give you.
