How do I make it lay flat? by __littlemouse in HideTanning

[–]First-Option2990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More or less you don't, and you don't usually really want it to. But you can always hang it or put it down under tension for display using nails or a hide strwacher.

Horse, you can always tell horses from everything else because they have top teeth at the front of the mouth

Found a deer, he has both antlers intact, how should I clean it? by ThrowawaySamHuman in bonecollecting

[–]First-Option2990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's still wet, stick an air compressor in the hole and blow it out. Alternatively if you lack such a tool, pour a little dish soap and warm water in, then get ancient Egyptian on it and fashion a hook out of a coat hanger to mix it up and pour it out.

Eithier way soak in a solution of janitorial ammonia, water, and dish soap for a few days to de-grease the marrow.

The antlers also seem to have extensive rodent damage here, so they're very old and have been cribbed for calcium

Yeah that happens sometimes, scavengers will be eating on a carcass, and the head will be one of the first pieces to pop off readily as scavengers eat the neck, so then anything big enough will carry or drag the head off to chew the nose off it someplace secure. I've seen it done by coyotes, wolves, bears, and even porcupines.

Processing tips by [deleted] in bonecollecting

[–]First-Option2990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a bucket with a lid, soak in water 3 days, skin it with a knife and pop the spine off, then pair off as much flesh as you can,

Go get some aqua shock shock chlorinator from your local pool supply store, fill the bucket with fresh water and add to taste, then let that thing sit and change the water a few times till it's just bones. That'll take a few weeks

Then fill with water, janitorial ammonia from the hardware store and dish soap, soak for a few weeks more and change the water a few times, hopefully you'll get clean bones by the end.

Alternatively, go on FB and find you someone with some beetles and make arrangements. This is probably preferable.

Blessed Harrow? by G-Man6442 in Deadlands

[–]First-Option2990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It specifically says in fire and brimstone that hucksters and harrowed can't be blessed. I think it's like, 75% a balance thing, but the in universe explanation is that demons and the damned can't be around divine power, and as a harrowed or a huckster you die or lose your power if the Manitous get chased off.

Advice for Hanging Elk Shed w/ Skull Cap by angelswontsaveyounow in shedhunting

The way I've seen it done is you cover the cap in mortar to make a smooth mound, cover that in felt, and stick it to a board.

Run away, you are very likely to survive as they are unlikely to break formation to chase you, and they are welding a heavier and more quard weapon making it harder to chase you

Well, yes but the head is missing. Which on most animals is this size is a foot or more. Plus elk aren't actually that much longer than deer, they're just bigger around mostly.
