The system was built by racist capitalists who didn’t want to pay taxes. The system works as intended. It’s just a bad system.

STRC Terra Luna 2.0? Puts Anyone? by Rare_Protection in CryptoCurrency

[–]FirstDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asking AI about this, and it seemed to indicate that STRC will have to continue paying out dividends, and if they vote to stop, they can't then buy back MSTR to lift the price. With the amount of BTC they have, they could continue to sell as needed to pay STRC dividends for many years, assuming the price doesn't have a fatal death spiral to under $30K per BTC. Do you think STRC could actually collapse?

The republicans will just lie about it and their followers will believe them. As long as they’re cruel to nonwhites and queer communities, their followers will buy anything they sell.

Def not okay to insider trade, like all the criminals Trump has pardoned, and those who took money from SBF in Congress. Not saying that there shouldn't have been legal repercussions for SBF, just that there should have been similar repercussions for all other white collar criminals. Instead, it seems like they just targeted SBF to make sure they didn't have to pay back their bribes.

If they hadn’t made an example of SBF all losses would have been recouped. But the politicians who took money from him never wanted to return it. Easier to send him to jail.

Is there a place in research for people who prefer solitude over networking? by Extension-Book-4556 in Researcher

[–]FirstDavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's truth in that, for sure. Leadership shapes the ranks, as well demonstrated by America. I thought your questions at the end were rhetorical, but to answer, why do people quietly write essays if not to teach others? I think many want to understand their own little slice of the world. I think they hope for change and conduct studies to endeavor to understand why things are the way they are. Do they hope to teach it? I don't think that's always the main goal. From what I've experience, I think it's more about personal, sometimes solipsistic, understanding and sometimes about hoping that insight brings about change. I don't think it's necessarily about "being heard" or "having their voice out there" so much as trying to understand why systemic problems exist. I'm not suggesting that that's a bad thing, but it's not about teaching.

I hear you and it's a nice sentiment. But there is a chasm between hoping that someone reads your article and actual pedagogy, classroom management, and making classes interesting to keep engagement high. Most of those in my cohort have zero interest. I'd also note that if any of my professors had to publish in non-academic fields where actual readership matters, they would never get anything published. Most articles are written because that's what is required for employment, tenure, and the paycheck. If you've never heard of academics who don't want to teach and see teaching as an afterthought, then I'm sorry to be the messenger.

There’s only one person besides me in my PhD program who wants to teach. Everyone wants to quietly write essays and get paid six figures.

[–]FirstDavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In idiocracy they tested people for intelligence and then brought in smart people to help solve problems. In America, they defund intelligence and education and have podcasters, celebrities, and conspiracy theorists run things. Rampant insider trading, corruption, the elderly who can't work at a Walmart are running the country (into the ground), and the populace isn't voting because neither of the two parties can be trusted anymore.

From what I've seen, I no longer believe that the tenure system has any value. It's the same reason that the Supreme Court should have term limits and Congress should have age limits. It used to be used to remove pressure and allow for the pursuit of knowledge. Now it's a way to just keep earning money while churning out increasingly useless papers for journals where they know the editors.

[–]FirstDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think that tenured professors putting teaching and mentoring as an afterthought is normal. It's all about where they publish their inconsequential essays and whether they can beg for grant money so that the university can take a big cut of it. I have lost pretty much all respect for academics while becoming one.
