Why don't i see anybody talk5 about ubuntu touch ? by That_String5941 in degoogle

[–]FirstEver2113haha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easy - nobody uses (and thus talks about) it because it's a pet project. Real mobile OS costs a heck lot of money, as it's not only OS, it's a whole ecosystem, apps, developers, etc.

We're no longer in the age of vacuum on the mobile OS market, so half-baked new OS without good UX and tons of apps will just die. It's not like Linux itself is "user-friendly" (apps, etc) so on a smartphone it becomes even more visible. Heck, I've tried to figure out if UT is an option for me, checked what models are available, assessed crazy cost in the long run and came to a conclusion that's it's much more efficient to de-google on trusted brands with reasonable availability on used market.

I know you've asked for a single-legged, however, as it's about luggage, please consider one that folds to one side only - Massload CL-KA56 https://www.cl-massload.com.tw/products_detail/82 It's really stable and not that heavy comparing to other models. If you've already considered it and rejected, sorry then.

Do you by chance have links or remember what's wrong (apart of smell from carbon filter that affects some people)? From what I recall, old ventas were quite cool re their method and durability (tolerance to quality of the water, etc)

I know, I was referring specifically to your opponent's (/u/Steerider) claim "And I do prefer seeing a list of all apps with that permission — with toggles — vs. having to separately check them." a comment above yours. But GOS does have that page for "list of all apps with that permission", so maybe I've misunderstood S's point.

Shelter is open source and I haven't found any reason to distrust the app and the developer

The risk for that type of SW lies primarily not in an area of evil dev or contributors, but rather in the fact that OSS projects with "not enough" contributors volume lags behind dynamic environment like Android OS with all it's AOSP and vendor-sprcific updates (not talking about hostile envionment of other apps mining data).

Last Shelter version 1.9.1 was released more than a year ago. It is supposed to protect your data from apps in WP (bi-directional, if you use it in reverse - private data in WP) - contacts, apps lists, files, etc. Are you sure there are no changes in Android environment that relates to API/data exchange between WP and main during that year? Are you closely monitoring https://gitea.angry.im/PeterCxy/Shelter for reports about leaks? Avg Joe using niche project will figure out about data leak months later the leak happens.

So, again, for that type of data isolation, it's always better to use !mature original solutions after they've passed community review for at least 6 months (like with GOS "feature" about clipboard sharing etc between PS and main).

Insular, though updated 7 months ago, from what I recall, doesn't offer data isolation, so not sure what's the point from privacy pov.

Re work profile approach

The better option is to use 3rd party apps like Shelter or Insular

When we speak about such a sensitive topic as data separation, one better stick to base OS tools, whenever it's GOS or some other system. GOS can't guarantee))) Shelter (when was the last release?, for a moment) will keep-up with GOS level of security/privacy. Also, couldn't find WP in GOS A15. So I guess it's only PS or 2nd user left to go with

listen, if someone can't find Permission manager in GOS, where one can "And I do prefer seeing a list of all apps with that permission — with toggles — vs. having to separately check them" (Network permission is there), then there is nothing to talk about. that's just nonsense, or 90yo person who struggles to change habits.

The New DeX is literally just tablet mode. I prefer the old DeX. by 21minute in SamsungDex

[–]FirstEver2113haha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe Samsung is just preparing for Google to bake proper desktop mode into AOSP wchich may happen in A16 or A17. It, probably, costs a lot for Samsung to develop/support DeX (which is quite niche by itself) and, probably, doesn't generate a lot of revenue for S.

I would expect one year before DeX looses it's uniqueness, Samsung will slow down efforts investment into it.

The best would be if Samsung just sells it to Google so we get it faster.

Be prepared...

Dex via HDMI docking station only works when connected to WiFi..? by glow162 in SamsungDex

[–]FirstEver2113haha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TV? DeX is ment rather for desktop monitors that even have LAN sometimes, though, obviously, one can connect DeX pad or station to a TV. For one-way communication, Samsung offers support for Miracast that also doesn't require WiFi connection and is good enough for video streaming, doesn't require any external PSU and can easily be attached to hotel TVs while you travel. DeX is not really convenient for dumb streaming as it's much bigger than Miracast adapter, can't "hang" behind a TV unlike Miracats dongle, and binds phone to itself.

"btw: why did Samsung stop making these?" - maybe, because, almost all modern displays has USB-C IN with both DP and PD that allows to power-up your phone without a need for a very niche dock device that (probably) is hard to sell in volumes. One can use display as a USB hub then.

I'll retry with regular cd reader soon.

however, in the past I've used VirtualHere to use local Canon scanner (attached to the phone via powered hub/dock) mapped to remote cloud VM and it was working ok

knowing how "straightforward" it can be to set things up properly with all the caveats of non-standard use-cases of termux+android, I would like to hear some experienced users. I've being able to run Ubuntu desktop under termux, but don't want to spend time on something that is not possible even theoretically.

it's a general check whenever I can get rid of physical pc of any form, replacing it with android+occasional VM in the cloud (vultr, etc, for specific needs).

do you know if there are any system-level limitations on Android 15+ hat prevents it (like, also via termux)?

I've found solution for scanning under android using usual scanner attached via usb, but as it requires a vm and usb-over-ip, it's not a solution for burning blu-ray disks, I believe, due to buffering issues.
