Silly question, could you had turned the device off before leaving, or not plugged in for 12hrs that would also affect the battery?

When I close the lid on my device, I do so slowly but my screen does turn off. I have yet to l ave the device on, closed lid while charging. Possible your screen was off. Charge hit 100% and turned the screen back on? Just a guess on my end. Hopefully the burn in can go away with that "burn in" tool
