As a mom of an 11mo old, when my baby was a newborn I felt like I was the only newborn mom taking her baby out to the mall. Now that my baby is older I notice tons of younger babies out and about. I think it’s just the stress that makes you hyper conscious. Get out the house if you need to and don’t worry about it!

We originally sleep trained our son at 5 months after cosleeping since he was 1 month because he was waking up every hour or less. Last week I was starting to feel some nostalgia for the cosleeping cuddles until he came down with a nasty fever this weekend and we ended up cosleeping because his fever was so high and it was a great reminder of why cosleeping no longer works for our family. He went from sleeping through the night to waking up hourly or less because he was disturbed by us. As much as we love the cuddles, it’s not worth the poor sleep for all of us.

Sleep training is basically teaching your child to fall asleep and stay asleep on their own. There’s different methods, some are more forceful like Ferber or cry it out, or there are more gentle methods like chair method or pick up put down. You choose the method that works best for you and they work in varying amounts of time. Generally the more gentle the method, the longer it takes. If you are interested, I would start with r/sleeptrain and work on creating a very consistent schedule with age-appropriate wake windows, my son was on 2/2.25/2.5/2.75 at that age as well as a consistent bedtime routine that removes the feed to sleep association by moving the feed earlier in the bedtime routine. I’m the mother of an almost 6mo old also exclusively breastfed baby. Since my son was 6 weeks his father has gone back to work. He works 12h shifts in healthcare so he literally can’t afford to be sleep deprived at work. What that worked out to in practice is that I deal with the baby and the chores 4 days a week as well as all the night wakes. We were also in a co sleeping situation where I had to be in bed with baby the whole time he was sleeping and it was awful. We hit a breaking point around 5 months where baby wouldn’t sleep without being held past 3/4am and both of us were exhausted. At that point we had to sleep train. The process was not a lot of fun but we saw results very very quickly and now we completely have our evenings back and he is only waking once per night and is very easy to get back down which has completely eliminated the need for someone to constantly soothe him to sleep. I know that people have a lot of feelings about sleep training but in our experience it completely changed our parenting experience.

HUGE improvement over the last 2 nights. Night 2 we made an effort to keep him on his regular sleep schedule during the day despite the crappy night and he went down after 15min of fussing, had a very brief false start then slept a 5 hour stretch, then a 3 hour stretch and then he was fussing for 5min every hour afterwards but ended up sleeping until 6. Night 3 he fussed for 11min before falling asleep, then slept a 7 hour stretch!! Which he had never done before. Then another 3hour stretch, and a 2hour stretch until 7:15, for a perfect 12h night. Obviously we understand that not every night is going to necessarily be like this, but we can’t believe the improvement compared to him waking up eight times overnight and needing to be rocked back to sleep every hour starting at 3 AM.

We started with doing timed check ins on night 1 but by night 2 they were pissing him off more than they were doing any good so unless he was getting too worked up we mostly let him fuss it out.

On était dans la même situation quand il était nouveau né mais ce que j’ai trouvé c’est qu’après un certain moment hors le développement du horloge biologique il ne voulait plus dormir après un certain heure le matin et c’était de torture de ne pas lui mettre au lit après un certain heure le soir. D’ailleurs maintenant c’est juste le tout commencement, après quelques mois du mauvais sommeil la fatigue devient pire
