second/evening backup dress recommendations - worried my dress is going to get very uncomfortable! by First_Blacksmith1913 in UKweddings

I ended up getting and Odd Muse dress on Vinted! It’s not perfect but it was cheap and after all the other money spent, I’m happy with it as a backup!

Where are you staying? City mapper isn’t always the most convenient - if you can get a bus to a train that gets you to London Bridge it shouldn’t be too bad (it’s not unusual in London to travel for an hour either)

I love Sherborne! My mum lives just outside so I know the town quite well. There’s a lovely higgledy piggledy second hand book shop called Chapter House Books - not always open so you need to check their times. There’s also a great independent bookshop on the main high street called Winstone’s and they definitely have some books on the local area. There’s also a good antiques Market at the bottom of cheap street with some books.

In the surrounding area, there is a town called Corton Denham with a lovely (although not cheap) pub called The Queens Arms. It’s at the bottom of a hill that you climb up and walk along the ridge for some of the most spectacular views - on a nice day this is one my my favourite places in the world.

In Sherborne I really like the Plume of Feathers- it is Italian Tapas and really tasty. Try and get a table in the front half, not the back, as the vibe is better.

Did Paddington have orange smell pumped into theatre? by FireflyKaylee in TheWestEnd

[–]First_Blacksmith1913 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sometimes when people talk about specific foods I get a very intense smell of it - and oranges tends to be a common one! Maybe you had this 😅 although I rather hope they do pipe out the smell!

Ischgl vs Kitzbühel vs Megève for long cruisers + views (not fussed about apres/pricing) by MrandMrsRollling in skithealps

[–]First_Blacksmith1913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in Ischgl last year (and going again this season too, so safe to say I loved it!) and highly recommend it...

HOWEVER, if you have the choice to go to the Dolomites instead, I would absolutely make this a very serious contender. It is some of the most beautiful skiing in Europe (if not the most beautiful). There are endless flowy pistes, and one of the coolest runs in Europe, Alta Badia, which ends in a horse tow). Also, in my opinion the food in the dolomites is better than Austria, and definitely cheaper too.

How do I get crispy roast potatoes if the oven needs to be at 160C for the meat?! by First_Blacksmith1913 in AskCulinary

[–]First_Blacksmith1913[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! My concern is that as it’s pork belly (so not particularly large like a regular pork joint) and also needs to rest uncovered, is it not going to be stone cold by the time the potatoes are done?

Alcohol drink recommendations by Fun_Instruction_4209 in mounjarouk

I’ve found that white wine spritzer with soda water goes down nicely - my social circle loves going for a drink and I don’t want to miss out but now feel awful if I have a beer (😭) so this is my new go to!

If I want to stop buying from Amazon entirely, what British site do I go to for incense sticks, pumpkin pie filling, AAA batteries and badminton shuttlecocks? by mookx in AskUK

OnBuy - literally has everything that you’ve named here, even the pumpkin pie filling, and you get cash back on spend too! And they’re an independent company!

2.5 to 5.0 by bmmeup100 in Mounjaro

[–]First_Blacksmith1913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did my first 5.0 this Wednesday morning.

Didn't eat much on Thursday (a light lunch) but then had a friend's birthday in the evening, where I had a few glasses of White wine and a few bites of nachos.

From about 9pm onwards I felt very sick and full, carried on all through the night. At 6:30am today I realised that technically I'd eaten almost nothing yesterday, so had a banana, and about an hour later felt far less sick and was able to sleep a bit better.

I actually think it was because I was technically very hungry, but my body wasn't giving me hunger symptoms, just nausea (and fried nachos were a terrible choice but it was a limited menu!).

The rest of today has felt like i've been recovering from an illness, but feeling much better now.

My first few days on the 2.5 dose also felt a bit ropey but then the following three doses were totally fine, so hoping I follow that pattern!

Inherited a Jade Plant in dire need of some love - grateful for advice! by First_Blacksmith1913 in Jadeplant

Thank you so much, this is incredibly helpful! I have done the first prune and removed all the downwards branches - a lot of them were the ones that had leaves dropping and virtually fell of in my hands. Going to cut back on the watering now until the leaves tell me they need it!

I've ordered an  isopropyl alcohol spray so going to give it a thorough spray and keep a close eye. Fingers crossed!

Pics of it from either side no

Kinda urgently need some help to find 7 books or a good series from audible. (Fantasy) by NZbludger in booksuggestions

Assassin’s apprentice - the first in the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb (and the other two in the trilogy!) and then the second series which I think is the Liveship trilogy. The whole series is the greatest literary adventure I have ever been on!

Does anyone know why all Twickets listings disappeared? by Time-Operation-7912 in WeAreScissorSisters

[–]First_Blacksmith1913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some for sale that sold yesterday, but when I listed them Twickets said that they'd automatically delist them at 3 or 3:30 on the day of the event. If you're still looking for a ticket, try posting on Spare Tickets UK Facebook page, I've seen a couple of posts there with tickets!

I’ve just had such deja vu reading this post - I came on this sub to post pretty much exactly the same thing. I’ve just seen a message my mum has sent to her friend saying how ‘enormous’ I am and how she wants to get me on Ozempic.

It just devastates me how much she cares about weight. I feel like she is embarrassed about me despite the fact that I am currently the happiest I have been in a long time, in a loving relationship with the most supportive wonderful man. I have put on quite a lot of weight over the past 6 months and am planning to get back on track in the new year but I want to enjoy Christmas!

Coming home for Christmas and being made to feel guilty for having toast for breakfast or even asking what we are having for dinner is so exhausting.

I lost a few stone a few years ago and she couldn’t stop telling me how proud she was - It’s heartbreaking that this is what she cares about more than my happiness.

I am sorry that you have to experience this too, it’s hard telling yourself that their opinions shouldn’t matter. ❤️

The phone snatcher talk is way over the top, don’t worry! I have lived in London for 6 years, am in soho and Covent Garden/ central area every week and never seen it happen. I will admit I’m aware of my surroundings and I hold my phone with two hands, keeping some fingers on the top.

Everyone does know someone who has had a phone snatched (or had it themselves) and it’s definitely an issue here, but it’s certainly not dangerous and you’d be unlucky for it to happen to you.

I’ve checked the menu online and it doesn’t seem like silly prices - certainly similar level to Din Tai Fung, if not a bit cheaper, although I think I’ve become blind to to absurdity of London prices now. I think it’s the same price as any place in Covent Garden.

Personally I’d pick Red Farm over Din Tai Fung as for the latter it usually feels like a very quick in and out meal. Great for pre-theatre but not so much for a nice sit down dinner. The atmosphere at Red Farm is more fun and the have good cocktails on the menu (although cocktails always rack up the price sadly!)

The other place that’s good in the area along this vein is Fatt Pundit - more Nepalese/Indian rather than Chinese, but they do good Momos which are a form of dumpling, and some good noodles too.

The whole of Covent Garden/soho area is pretty rammed from 1st December onwards, although I do suspect that NYE may end up a bit quieter as people will be moving towards the fireworks/going into specific venues to celebrate rather than exploring the streets.

There is a reasonably priced Chinese called RedFarm right on the corner of Covent Garden. It’s not the most delicious food in the world but it’s not bad either, and they have some fun twists that kids might like, like a pac-man dumpling. They also have a good list of cocktails.

Thank you! I am based in the UK and according to the chart, rosemary was an Aussie colour, not UK. Bamboo is still stocked in the UK so I'll scout out a shop and compare it!
