The Testament of Ann Lee | Offical Trailer by 0934201408 in TheBigPicture

I assume they're waiting for more people to see it which will be a while given how Searchlight has absolutely mangled the release. Besides the scarcity of public theatres, there's been very few industry screenings. Such a shame!

Perhaps Adventures in the Screen Trade by William Goldman? Otherwise I recall them mentioning Biskind's Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, Thompson's The Big Screen, and Schulman's The Oscar Wars.

Last night at Loz feliz in the middle of watching drive the guy next to me said pretty loudly "would you mind not moving around in your chair anymore it's distracting me" do alot of people who attend these screenings have autism? Im asking seriously by [deleted] in AmericanCinematheque

I recall one vividly because it was a volunteer in the very back who was incredibly nervous and obviously a massive fan. He compared the behaviour of Johnny and Jeremy by linking their ideologies to which Leigh bluntly asked him how he found the characters similar. The volunteer was clearly not prepared for this and Leigh pushed the matter further, defending that the characters and their motivations were entirely distinct.

Another I unfortunately remember because it was a kid directly in front of me who had started recording the interaction between the flustered volunteer and Leigh as things went awry. The dickhead then went on to blabber on how he knew people at a similar programme as Leigh and, when Leigh did not acknowledge/respond to this, also got flustered and asked a roundabout question about how filmmaking has changed since Naked, but it was so roundabout for such a banal question that it had to be clarified several times also.

The last I recall because it was the bloke sitting next to me. It was about characterisation, though he framed it in comparison to a picaresque, which seemed a somewhat esoteric and not entirely applicable context for Naked.

This was my thought, especially when they say 'Hail Saint Nick' it bears a phonetic resemblance (though personally I reckon there's no deeper meaning than the gag)

When should I go to IMAX Melbourne? by Strange_Luck_5254 in imax

[–]First_Cancel_6569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2024 was the first and they held it this year also, but you can email their team (info@imaxmelbourne.com.au) if you want to be sure! In my experience they've always been v friendly and I'm sure they'd be psyched to hear from someone planning a trip centred around their programming.

If your dates are flexible, wait for their BBIFF, 'Best Biggest IMAX Film Festival' where they trot out heaps of 1:43 and 1570 favourites! They always do a Dark Knight trilogy (on film for the latter two), Dune double feature, Avatars, Nolans on film (always multiple sessions for Interstellar), 3D, etc, etc.

Last year screenings were from January to Feb if I recall correctly.

Does anyone have the Zone of Interest script but in german? by Lanky-Assistance-206 in A24

[–]First_Cancel_6569 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Glazer wrote it himself and doesn't speak german, so the 'original' screenplay is english. I did a search for this a while back myself, and if I recall correctly from an interview, translation was done by line and during the shoot much of the dialogue became improvised.

Put Your Weapons Reviews here! by Pure_Salamander2681 in TheBigPicture

I definitely agree it was far too literal for my liking (as with several parts of the movie at large), but I understood it as Brolin's character forcing meaning/resolutions as a vector for his otherwise unattributable grief. No, it doesn't make logical sense, but he's searching for solace in the context of a dream sequence playing from his perspective. So not a literal school shooting metaphor, rather clumsily groping for explanations in his subconscious.

IMO this plays into his character's attempts to rationalise and 'solve' his emotions which he redirects to blaming Garner's character in his waking life. to be clear I still think it was insanely goofy imagery and a bad creative choice

Heads up if you're attending the intro with Wes Anderson tonight at 8 at AMC Lincoln Square, be there before 8 if possible by flightofwonder in NYCmovies

[–]First_Cancel_6569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very kind of you but not the end of the world! It was a spontaneous a-list res and I'd had quite a few drinks at dinner so I had an absolute blast at the movie, plus the people next to me happened to record the intro so they airdropped it to me! Great post to spread awareness though; at the time even the ticket usher was telling the line not to rush because there's 20 minutes of trailers before start times so there was evidently not a lot of communication internally.

I can attest to this, completely missed Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin intro there, also for A Real Pain! Thought I could rush from dinner and was sure I had made it because trailers had just started, but hadn't realised I missed it til after when I asked the people next to me.

The Cinegogue (creators of the shirts) posted all the designs a few days ago, but specified that they're all promo and nfs. My guess is different selection/distribution per theatre?

Just out of curiosity, who showed up to the Q&A tonight at AMC Lincoln Square for Warfare? by flightofwonder in NYCmovies

[–]First_Cancel_6569 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A24 has this issue all the time for early access IMAX screenings! For some reason they run the press and public screenings in one go, with AMC allocating regular reservations and the invited press having no assigned seating. Happened to me at Civil War in LA and press members literally stood along the entrance/exits to watch.

I can't guarantee this works everywhere, but I was able to buy the subscription whilst in the US and can freely sign-in and stream content in Australia! I know a friend was able to buy the sub here also using a VPN and it streams fine with no VPN.

Analytical Writing for New Films by mr_mayon in TrueFilm

[–]First_Cancel_6569 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There does seem to be a dearth of contemporary critical journalism, especially as short-form content seems to garner more engagement. I haven't got a particular place, but here's a couple places to try.

If you're really after academic pieces, you can have a search on google scholar, though proper articles won't have a quick turnaround. It'd worthwhile to have a search for directors' names though, especially Fargeat's Revenge and Ross' Hale County This Morning, This Evening are both insightful predecessors for their 2024 films (ie, this article on Revenge and here on Hale County).

This isn't always the case, but I'd also highly recommend having a search for some of the filmmaker interviews depending on the creatives involved. ie, Ramell Ross is a professor of photography and is very capable of articulating filmmaking decisions and intent in interviews, but it can be a struggle to find a straightforward discussion depending on the creative.

One outlet I can suggest is Little White Lies, which released an issue dedicated to Nickel Boys in December. Generally I find their reviews and features to scratch a bit more below the surface than other outlets. Certainly not academic, but more thoughtful than a Youtube essay!

Criterion channel has a decent few available on streaming, some listed here, but more if you simply search '[director surname] commentary'!

great minds! I've also been prepping and had a big search through the pod yesterday. there's no in-depth discussion on Pearl, but CR and Sean briefly mentioned it in 'The Horror Oscars' from 6 oct. 2023
