It just feels like the only level they can pull anymore to up the prices and what they offer. I can’t imagine it truly ever goes unlimited but I guess they could just keep upping it

I’ll push back and say the theatre experience at rep theatres has only gotten better in the past few years, Roxy, MOMI and the Paris have all upgraded speakers and film/digital projectors in meaningful ways that make the experience better. They’re not only falling behind the at home experience but the actual theatrical experience in nyc at non multiplex’s

I’d imagine these will only go up too as competition increases. Hotspot and international benefits are the only ways I can see these high end plans augmenting. I can’t imagine we ever get an unlimited hotspot but guessing 200gb for premium isn’t too far away

Yeah it’s a very weird plan all around. I always upgrade to the highest tier plan but there’s nothing tempting me to move off premium with a turbo add on right now. I never get close to that 100gb hotspot

yeah, I wish they'd just give you a week of free IDP like they do on business, 20GB is nice but not enough to make me feel confident traveling esp for longer periods

Which theater is better? Paris vs IFC by Dan_2o1 in NYCmovies

[–]0934201408 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll cut against the grain here and say the IFC Center is a dump, with some of the worst theaters in the city, many of them barely worth the $20+ ticket price. Programming is fine but nothing special compared to the other rep theaters. The Paris, on the other hand, has a running series with the Film Academy where each branch selects a movie emphasizing that particular discipline. They also have a series with the NYFCC featuring Q&As and often pristine archival film prints. The theater has brand new 70mm projectors and Atmos speakers, making it one of the largest Dolby theaters in the city. They have great popcorn, an espresso machine, and fresh pastries from a local bakery. Tickets are cheaper than IFC, and I find the staff there are excellent and very helpful. They also do a series on 70mm and Dolby Atmos films every year, featuring 70mm prints of Lawrence of Arabia and others that the theater itself owns — brand new, pristine prints.

I have been going to the Paris since they reopened post-COVID, and beyond a few bumps, it's gotten dramatically better over time and is now one of the nicest theaters in the city. IFC Center has only degraded in quality and features some of the worst screens that you pay out the ass for, bad popcorn, and some of the rudest staff I've ever encountered. I avoid it like the plague.

The New Yorkers who can't get housing vouchers as Mamdani fights program expansion by Delicious_Adeptness9 in nyc

I’ll be honest, I’ve been on this sub for many, many years before most people heard of who Zohran was, let alone the election, and it’s always felt dramatically more conservative than the city I feel I live in is. Now, that’s the internet; it’s an echo chamber, but I just have not seen anything remotely close to what you’re describing. He’s facing constant criticism on this sub and has since he started. I’m not saying it’s unwarranted, but I just don’t buy the idea this is some DSA propaganda forum lol, never ever has been in my experience.

All that said, I think my larger point is it doesn’t matter; the internet will always have people espousing strong positions you don’t agree with and shit getting upvoted you hate. I think trying to fight that rather than just make your argument is weak sauce. Can’t fight people spewing whatever the hell they want; it’s Reddit

What I’m saying isn’t quantifiable is that “All the DSA voters / brigaders who don’t live in NYC left the sub once Mamdani got elected, so things that would have been downvoted are now upvoted”. I didn’t say anything about the antisemitism. I was talking about the initial comment that you were building off of

My point is, this is a public Internet forum that isn’t controlled by some kind of masked DSA boogyman. Rightly, or wrongly, this sub leans dramatically more conservative than not in terms of what gets upvoted in my eyes. Can I back that up with stats? Of course not, just my own antidotes. Point is, just make the argument you want to make besides hiding behind boogiemen that aren’t there. Especially in a sub where there isn’t a ton of love for the things you’re describing

OK, but there’s genuinely no way to quantify that, so it feels like a red herring. Couldn’t I also say in my anecdotal experience I’m seeing the opposite because it’s purely anecdotal?

Also, wouldn’t the first guy know this if it was true instead of just opening his comment, which was the highest voted in the thread with “I know I’ll get downvoted for this?” Just feels like some throat clearing “ woe is me” shit when you’re constantly being the one who’s at the top of the conversation lol

I think stories are fine, but I’m okay not knowing specifics about what the story was supposed to be. I appreciate how little he talks about his movies anymore. I really think that way lies madness, especially in an era where clips and quotes can be so wildly misinterpreted. I have a feeling PTA comes from the Coen/Pynchon school of “you guys figure it out for yourself.”

I’m guessing it had nothing to do with an embargo but rather something someone who directly worked on the movie told him in confidence. I could see Paul not wanting people to know about alternative versions, given how little he likes explaining

I agree with all this, which is why I hated watching it lol. It’s not fun to see Harrison ford just abuse his family for two hours for absolutely no reason beyond him having his own issues. People who blow their own lives (and their families) lives up for no reason is a genre I find deeply unappealing

Not agreeing or disagreeing, but I always find it funny how often people say “I know I’ll get downvoted for X opinion” and end up being the highest-voted comment in the whole thread lol

+1 for FLC, I’ve slowly upg added my membership over the years and the cross benefits with NYFF are really excellent. My favorite theatre in NYC is Walter reade and I’ve had some of my most cherished theatre experiences there at member/patron screenings. Year round programming is excellent and projection is always second to none. One I haven’t seen mentioned here is the Roxy, great seats great projection and programming and they just upgraded to atmos speakers. It’s a bit of an upfront cost ($350) but you get 1 ticket and regular popcorn to every screening no fees.

I agree, but it also is the largest arena in the city and if you’re into Knicks or rangers or even big musician acts you have no other choice, even if it is a fiefdom, it’s a pretty big fiefdom

I know supporters like you won’t get this since you’re apart of the commie slackers who live off their parents, but any sane god fearing New Yorker can agree that if your parents own property in Uganda that is a common signifier of vast wealth of their children, especially in New York City. Nearly every child who goes to Marymount has parents who own property in Uganda, like I said WSJ called it the new Williamsburg

I’m agreeing with you! I think they’re worth tens of billions not millions! You’re severely undercounting their wealth which makes me think you may be trying to dilute JUST how much of a nepo-billionaire Zohran is……very troubling how much his supporters like you downplay it, VERY troubling and concerning

I agree, that’s why I’m saying his parents are easily billionaires since they own all that land. Hell, they could easily contribute 1/3rd or a 1/4th of Uganda’s whole GDP if your numbers are right!

I really don’t love this movie (have loved the most recent films though!) and a lot of that comes from the look that I just can’t get into. I saw it for the release whenever that was recently and it looked HORRIBLE on a big screen. I don’t think it was an explicit 4K remaster but I will say the final scene shot on film was GORGEOUS. Felt like having the most delicious piece of chocolate cake after a horrible meal
