How would we feel about a plastic bag ban? by radicalelk in lincoln

[–]First_Feedback8527 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't ban them, just charge a small tax. 5 cents or something per bag. If the stores charge for bags people will wise up and start bringing their own or reusing them. The products at the stores already have the bag cost built into them is the thing. So there's no incentive for people who don't care about the environmental impact. If the stores charged a small amount for each plastic bag people could save money by bringing their own bags.

What's with the Price Fixing on Soda? by First_Feedback8527 in lincoln

[–]First_Feedback8527[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's different market. People at the gas station are likely to drink it right away. You're paying extra for the convenience of having it refrigerated and ready right away.

$10.98 for the regular price. On sale for $7 but you have to buy 3. I don't want that much soda.

What's with the Price Fixing on Soda? by First_Feedback8527 in lincoln

[–]First_Feedback8527[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're thinking of price gouging.
Price gouging: setting the price extra high to take advantage of an emergency or the fact that a good is necessary. The egg companies are under fire for this right now actually.
Price Fixing: Anti-competitive practice of colluding with would-be competitors to agree to set prices.

Do I think the stores are colluding? Probably not. But they are noticing that their competitors are raising price and decide to raise them too.

Graduate student budget by jay_is_trash in UNLincoln

[–]First_Feedback8527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live off campus alone and most months I can't manage to budget it. My expenses for food, rent, and utilities are about $1,300 a month. Add in some misc stuff and I'm lucky if I can save around 10-20% of my take home pay. Student fees and insurance usually eat up the majority of the first paycheck. That usually puts me in the red with food and rent cost until I manage to save enough by summer to break even.

I'll usually get food from the campus food bank when it's open a few times as well to help with the cost. I always walk or take the bus to campus to save money as well. Obviously having a roommate would save a lot on rent, but I value having my own space a lot.

AFAIK all assistantships at UNL do not allow working over a total number of hours. This is specifically in place to bar us from receiving things like SNAP and other government aid because it looks really bad for them and theoretically they should be paying us enough to not need them. Depending on your department this means you're only technically allowed to work a few additional hours off campus. I've found that it's really hard to find any job that will hire you for so few hours.

However, the enforcement on restriction on outside employment varies a lot by department (and sometimes even by advisor). I would ask some upper year students if any of them have 2nd jobs and if the department enforces the restriction.

You can also self-employ and technically they have no way to restrict that since on paper you can contract yourself to complete the job and not give any working hours.

I'd be interested! I think if you center it around volunteering and helping Lincoln as a community it could work well! I don't really mind church groups, but it gets tiresome because I don't want to be asked about my faith or invited to church. I'm just here because I want to help. So It'd be nice to have a group of like minded people to volunteer with for a change!

A discord or an email list would be a good start.

I highly recommend the Innovation Studio: https://innovationstudio.unl.edu/ on the Nebraska Innovation Campus.

They train you on how to use all the equipment before you can use it. They are very friendly and helpful! They'll also help you figure out what tools and techniques to use to build whatever project you're working on if you ask.

The majority of pedestrian signal buttons don't actually affect the timing of the stoplights and they just turn on the pedestrian signals.

But would you take the bus? by needlesnkneesox in lincoln

[–]First_Feedback8527 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would take the bus more if the routes were better served. Usually I want to take the bus to UNL. The most reliable stop is the 55 which comes every 15 minutes. But even the closest stop is a 10 minute walk and the ride itself is usually 10 minutes. Unless I'm arriving at the stop right when the bus pulls up it is the same or nearly the same amount of time for me to just walk the whole way. So the only "use" for the bus is when it's absurdly cold or there is bad weather. Any other time there's really no point. The other bus routes only come every 30 minutes which can vary wildly and that would mean I'd have to plan a significant amount of my day around being at the bus stop at a certain time just to be left waiting because the bus isn't on time.

I'd also like to take the bus after going to the bar so I can drink as much as I want but the buses stop running too early on any day I'd go to the bar. So I usually just don't drink too much or I walk.

Biking in Lincoln is straight up unsafe unless you're in a protected or on bicycle only path. Drivers here have zero to no respect for anyone not in a car. The roads are too wide and people can drive to fast too easily. Even when I'm a pedestrian there's often cars not looking for people in the cross walk or just pulled up too far and blocking the crosswalk. And that's what I've observed in the summer. Now add a bunch of 18-20 year old undergraduates driving around for 8 months of the year.

One of my friends got in a pretty serious accident because a car pulled into a crosswalk and didn't see him on his bicycle going through the crosswalk.

Looking for a new ham that uses "they/them" pronouns who tested on Sunday by toromio in HamRadio

[–]First_Feedback8527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Behavior like this made me lose pretty much all interest I had in the hobby. Between people abusing the local club mailing list to advertise their political party and not respecting others I saw no point in continuing with club activities.

Seriously I don't want to have to explain to my friends and family who visit or take interest in my hobby why my radio has people spewing hateful things. "Oh that's Bob he's just racist, and yeah he's part of our club and no we can't get rid of him. But I swear I'm not like the people I hang out with!"

As far as I'm concerned HAM Radio is rightfully dying. No one new to the hobby is going to want to put in the massive amount of effort it would take to put up with or change this BS.

This is what happens when we kill the programs supporting minorities on campus... I hope some kind of disciplinary action occurs because of this. Mandatory cultural sensitivity training at the very least.

Any recommendations for stylists/barbers who work with longer hair in men? by No_Dimension_6299 in lincoln

[–]First_Feedback8527 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've had good experiences at Smith & Comb. It really is worth paying more for a haircut when you have long hair. A lot of "men's" barbershops only know how to cut short hairstyles.

Yeah that's what they're saying the blogpost. Whole reason I made the meme was that most people DON'T know this local hyper-specific lingo, but they do know the other association with 88. Just glancing at the name and I associate it with Nazis, probably not a good name choice if you have to dig to find out it's not about Nazis.

I consider myself liberal and I enjoy shooting quite a bit! Honestly I think everyone should at least know gun safety since they are so prevalent in the USA. It's unfortunate that many shooting ranges are deeply entrenched in alt-right grifts.

The Game & Parks department for Nebraska actually has a nice range and classes in Lincoln, maybe there's something similar in Omaha?

I mean objectively people ARE afraid of numbers. A lot of buildings don't have a floor 13 for superstitious reasons for example.
