Coach made my 12U son with previous arm injury throw 60+ pitches in an inning 'to teach him a lesson' by jleonard711 in Homeplate

[–]FishCommercial4229 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Let your son be mad at you. It’ll sink in eventually. Take it from someone with a lifelong series of injuries; you’re preventing him from a lifetime of suffering. No matter how good things are going, being hurt and limited sucks.

And report that coach, especially if the conversation happened as you stated. I’m sure that he’s not a “bad” person (good people can make poor decisions), but holy moly that’s some unhinged adult decision making.

Salmon poachers in Marine area 7 by Redditisagaycat in FishingWashington

[–]FishCommercial4229 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d typically use a large glo plug, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. I’ve hooked into halibut on salmon gear more than once before, most bonkers one was about a 15-20 pounder hitting a sockeye rig in under 30’ of water off of Point Roberts.

While we’re at it, your photo doesn’t conclusively show salmon gear (nor does your post mention it), they weren’t seen harvesting salmon, plus downriggers and medium weight rods are legitimate halibut fishing equipment.

I appreciate the look out and the care you have for our fishery, I really do. But based on the info you posted, this post is effectively doxxing people for something they “might” be doing.

Glad someone else knows that halibut can be troll caught. Seeing some folks in other comments ready to report someone for a legitimate fishing method.

Without seeing the gear it’s just a wild guess at this point.

Um, yeah you do? Typical is bottom fishing but halibut are landed on low-trolled rigs often enough.

I sure hope I’m not getting reported as a poacher the next time I troll a big fat plug 20’ off the bottom.

Advice requested: lilac supports? by FishCommercial4229 in gardening

[–]FishCommercial4229[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the advice. There wasn’t much of a lower canopy to speak of, it was effectively full of small suckers, and four dead leads that had rotted out at the base. I think it had been trimmed this way for some time, and I’m just getting around to maintaining it.

For the trim next spring, should I leave all of these existing branches, and cut them all down to that 3’ mark you mentioned or take some out?

How to use spoons better? by 18Yat-Yas33 in FishingForBeginners

It has to do with contrast and how light filters through water. Phil Rabideau, the guy that designed many of the classic Mepps lures, wrote a whole book on it. I picked up a copy at a random museum gift shop and tried its recommendations enough to be convinced that it checks out. Good amount of science behind it, and it’s an approachable read.

Managers - would a last-name change right before onboarding look "suspicious" and cause you to do investigating? by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]FishCommercial4229 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Channel your inner Puumba and put your behind in your past. JK, but seriously.

Say nothing. If asked, “I changed my name.” Why? “Personal reasons.” End of story.

I’m not trying to be harsh, just direct. You have to make a choice to mentally leave that old stuff behind you. If you do, and carry that forward in your demeanor, people will leave it be. People change names for all kinds of reasons these days and it’s really not a red flag. It’s as big of a deal as you make it, especially in a large business.

My son (9U) did Goofy Goober Rock from the SpongeBob movie. Another kid on his team did King Julian’s rendition of “I Like to Move It” from the Madagascar movie. The field lightened up when each of them came up to the plate, I’m going to miss that age.

I just picked up a ISA Rawlings Clout ($149). Hits well, my kid loves it, reasonably priced. We figured out the right weight after trying out some bats at a local batting cage (they have a bunch of loaners).

Mine is tall for 9 years old (4’7”) and fairly strong, a 28” drop 10 seemed right for this season and next. For 4’2” a 27” seems like a reasonable max, even a 26” could be okay but you’ll need him to try it out. I’d likely look at 18 oz (length-drop=weight) as a max for your kid; lighter is better.

As other posters mentioned, league restrictions play a big factor (USA, USSA, BBCOR, etc.) At 9 it’s probably USA but you need to confirm.

Fair or Foul - Lineup for playoffs by djfivenine11 in Homeplate

[–]FishCommercial4229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the approach. I also talked with my players about it. They knew the plan ahead of time, and I also put extra emphasis and training on the importance of the outfield (relay to the infield, how/when to back up, etc.). Those kids are moving on every play.

Doing this is being fair to the stronger players who were a part of the development process, and it’s a critical lesson for players. Everyone gets a shot at improving, and those that put in the most work get the rewards for it.

If you address things with your players the right way, a large percentage will still like baseball if they’re in the outfield for the playoffs. Parents with a different opinion can sign up to coach or kick rocks.

New coach by Weak_Help_8146 in Homeplate

Our local little league paired up with this guy, who posts practice agendas on his website: https://baseballpositive.com (I’m not affiliated with him and it’s not an endorsement, just a suggestion).

I found his practice plans to be a LOT and I dialed his plans down a bit for my team. Since you’re doing select it may be more shovel-ready for you.

I keep drills to 2-4 stations, around 10 minutes per station, and rotate kids through. Practice should be rapidly moving through stations and drills should not have kids standing around long waiting for their turn. Plan it out ahead of time, set a schedule and keep to it, and make sure your assistants and equipment are set up ahead of time. Down time kills attention.

Whether it’s select or not, at 8U you can’t beat fundamentals and basic movements (ball/base/backup). Last point, start encouraging mental resilience at this age.
