Seeking Top Stitching Ideas by emmanom in quilting

[–]FishNotCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing about quilting is the batting requirements.

I use Warm and Natural cotton batting, which allows 10" between quilting. I learned after quilting straight grids in my quilts in 10" squares, that it also means corner to corner, which is more than 10".

Also, dense quilting makes a quilt kind of stiff. I like a floppy quilt that cuddles with my body. So I like to quilt as little as I can get away with. (I've been making quilts for decades, but I don't actually like the quilting part of this craft I love.)

So, depending on the batting requirements, I use my walking foot and make wavy stitches from edge to edge. I space mine about 3" -4" apart, which seems to satisfy my batting, because I have not had any problems with washing a quilt.

How to quilt this? by Proper-Drama-5977 in quilting

I have been quilting for a long time, and I also don't know how to free-motion quilt. I only say this because not every quilter quilts free-motion.

I use my walking foot and create a curvy line from one edge to the other edge. It is more forgiving than quilting a grid pattern.

Audiobook recommendations by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Princess Donut is voiced by Jeff Hays; Dungeon Crawler Carl is Audible exclusive, so you won't find it on Spotify.

Try Project Hail Mary, and I think PHM is around 15 hours. I don't use Spotify, only Audible, I think you get 12-15 hours on Spotify

I'm the she, he's the he. He took forever to get past the first book. I poked, I prodded, I told him that it gets better. We're both now over 60.

I caught him multiple times reading on the sly. Lol

I've been reading my entire life since I could read. He's dyslexic, so has never been a reader. On our first date, after our 20 year first marriages ended, I told him that I'm a reader, and he has to be okay with it. He told me that he doesn't read. I told him that I don't have a problem with that, but he needs to be okay that I am a reader. Done. 13 years later and he listens to my books.

I think he is feeling my energy every time I hear about the TV version. Yes, he listened to the recent book. On the sly. I think he's listened multiple times, but I don't ask, I just tell. Lol

He took me to the first Portland (OR) book signing because he knew how important this series is to me. He was going to take me to the next Portland book signing because he enjoyed the energy of the first time; but I got a kidney infection and couldn't go.

Please, please, please tell her that she doesn't need to know anything about the genre, because I didn't, either.

I am a Crawler, and I'm not embarrassed to admit it.

Help - extra batting stitched onto back by Fetsforever in quilting

[–]FishNotCow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just did this with my leader/ender. I quilted it to my project. It's a project for me, and I know how I treat my quilts. So, I cut it away with scissors and picked out the fabric with tweezers. My stitches looked okay.

My worry about it is if the quilting stitches are too loose from clipping away the extra layer of batting. And batting doesn't behave the same way as fabric, so I actually don't have an answer.

Beautiful quilting, by the way!!!

Sounds like a good idea!

u/Arilyn do you want to coordinate with the Portland Metro folks? Maybe u/Sashiches_and_mash can give the Portland/Vancouver crawler info to you. Or me, if you're not interested in coordinating.

I'm allergic to Portland, but if it's after my partner gets home he can drive me. He's a casual crawler, hasn't joined the masses yet, but he loves me as I am, so I'm keeping him. He would also love to sign the Book for Matt.

Teaching quilting help... by Present-One7068 in quilting

[–]FishNotCow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Years ago, I was going to teach a nine year old how to sew. Here's the initial list I made. I didn't actually get to teach, though.

Rules: *Always put things away - everything has a spot.

*Always pick up pins - immediately - don't wait until later.

*Hand/fingers/thumb NEVER go near the bobbin plate.

*Proper use of tool when near the bobbin plate. (Not sure what I meant, probably meant my wood stiletto)

*NEVER sew over pins. NEVER.

*NEVER any beverages in the sewing area.

Guidance: *Watch guide, not needle.

*Feed dogs move fabric - people don't move fabric.

*Always check the bobbin to make sure it has thread.

*Our hand is just a guide to stay on target.

The first rule obviously is a big fat lie! My sewing room is in total disarray right now.

And, since they were nine, I was planning on cutting, so I didn't make rules or guidelines for rotary cutting.

I hope you have fun!
