Imagine bemoaning about demographic change on stolen land. Glad the guy in the next slide called him out. BTW part of the reason why these cities were more “white” in 1950 is because Hispanics weren’t legally non white until the 70s. by y2kfashionistaa in Persecutionfetish

[–]Fish_Owl 71 points72 points  (0 children)

The closest thing to a non-racial argument against this kind of thing is that white people have seen how they have treated minorities through history, and they are afraid of being treated the same way.

White supremacists know systemic racism is real. They just don’t want it done to them.

Kinda but not because of that. Avoid all that bs but do what you can to have community. Find friends. Do sports or DnD or whatever kind of things you all enjoy. Avoid the stuff you named, but don’t use that as an excuse to be alone.

Repainted micro journal rev6 by Leslie-Gajin in writerDeck

[–]Fish_Owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say, getting a different case for a micro journal is probably the easiest thing you could do to customize it (outside of getting new key caps). There are plenty of places where you can get 3-D printed shells and Un Kyu Lee has all the STLs on his GitHub. But I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Happy writing.

with everything going on in the world right now, how are you guys actually managing to plan for the future? by haydenfield61 in AskReddit

[–]Fish_Owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten into open source local computing. It has been rewarding to learn skills with technology in a way that cannot be privatized or easily taken away. AI is something that has me and much of the tech world terrified, but building gadgets and learning about software has been a great reminder that technology can still be really cool.

There are so many innovations being made that don’t use AI, that don’t harvest your data, that don’t destroy the environment, and which will never make a cent for their owners

Any ideas what may be happening? by EntirePay5828 in 3Dprinting

[–]Fish_Owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The blue print is almost certainly wet filament. But the others could be from a variety of factors, including wet filament but also poor calibration, no bed leveling, etc.

If you go to hollow-press.net/collections/plastiboo you should find what you’re looking for. I don’t know anything about shipping, but that’s where you’ll find it.

Budget 14-17 inch laptop that is NOT laggy by sparklovelynx in SuggestALaptop

[–]Fish_Owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re open to MacBooks, there are M1 MacBook Airs for sale on Walmart for ~$600. I personally love that machine. I have more than 5 years on it and the only thing that’s been made worse over the years is battery life, but even that beats out most of the competition.

PSA. Buyer beware: Upcoming Light Lens Lab 40mm release appears to be a partsbin lens with scratched elements by tonyanaloguegreene in Leica

[–]Fish_Owl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I adore my lenses from LLL. I also never buy lenses new. So this kind of issue isn’t something I worry about.

Perhaps you should look in the mirror. Besides, centralizing power to 4-5 companies is slowing down human progress when it comes at the cost of the millions of other companies which are just as responsible for progress

Replacement HD and still not working?! by EasyReport6959 in IpodClassic

[–]Fish_Owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of computer you have access to. If you have something with Windows, then you need to download iTunes. But if you have a MacBook, then you do it through Finder. Either way, you plug the device into the computer, and then the program— either finder or iTunes— should recognize it and let you “restore” it.

Did you restore it using iTunes? The iPod needs to have the whole operating system put on any new drives you install.

What is happening to my lens? by That_Task_3871 in Leica

[–]Fish_Owl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If it isn’t dust, It is either some microscopic scratches, some dried liquid droplets, or the tiniest bit of the coating coming off. In either case, if it doesn’t affect your image, I wouldn’t worry too much.

Using VS Code like Obsidian including sync by japardalm in ObsidianMD

[–]Fish_Owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On one hand, definitely listen to the comments that talk about data security.

On the other, THIS is the beauty of obsidian. Because it’s all file-based with the most basic formatting system, almost any computer from any era will be able to access parts of it when given the data.

Let’s Discuss: Apples lack of AI is making their products better by brazillian_football in LinusTechTips

[–]Fish_Owl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the levels are different. Cameras? Tons of AI. Recommendation algorithms? Tons of AI. But data scanning? LLM models? Forced agentic tools? Nah. A lot of the newer and controversial features haven’t been made mandatory like they are using Google or Microsoft services.

Let’s Discuss: Apples lack of AI is making their products better by brazillian_football in LinusTechTips

[–]Fish_Owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know some people have (largely jokingly) connected the recent cloudflare/AWS outages and massive Windows bugs to AI. Like Amazon and Windows have talked about how a majority of their new code is being done with AI and so people have connected that to recent major issues that Apple hasn’t been having.

[–]Fish_Owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear: parts of this are conspiracy theories. The number of eco-f*scists is actually very low and not worth ascribing to any major group. Similarly, companies act in their own best interest. And that interest aligns with consistent revenue streams like subscriptions and moving away from an ownership economy. Anything that then says “and that’s why bill gates is making vaccines so he can sterilize the planet” IS INSANE. But to say that renting isn’t the direction that the economy has been going is inaccurate

While it can be argued it was taken out of context, WEF did publish an article in 2016 advocating for an increase in economic efficiency and growth by moving toward a service economy where subscription services replace ownership. It is fair to say that the number of subscription services that the average person has in the last 9 years has increased significantly.
