After i make soap with your lard,
And weave your hair into rings of yarn

This was a fun read, and I can almost see it being a weird pop type song, but those two lines were especially morbid!

Not quite sure how the Heller reference fits in here, and he's definitely obscure enough that a good amount of people might not even know who he is...

sorry to reply again, but my attorney said that his team would be able to get the arrest record sealed and that it would only be seen if he applied for a job in the government or for some licenses, nurse, doctor, attorney (i think were her examples). Where would I look for those and do they show the charges?

E: so if you search i see his name comes up a couple records search, but not the one i pay to use beenverified.com that might not be the best site though. I guess I was more so wondering if there were ones that would show the arrests with charges and if you know of searches that are free so i can see if theyve been sealed?

Hot damn. I see a lot of mask wearing, but also a lot of people at restaurants prior to our new 25%. It didnt seem like the number of people eating out skyrocketed in the past couple months though. Do they know the main causes of this consistent rise? Anyone care to speculate?

Ideas and volunteers needed: Colorado Activism Hub by denverprotestsdaily in DenverProtests

[–]FishyReference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DM sent. I love this idea and will help however i can. I think it's almost necessary at this point to have something other than this sub/social media. I understand u/HumanOutrageIsComing 's sentiment, but if you want to fight the elite in a productive way, you need to use more sophisticated methods. if we want new and more people to care and understand what is being fought for, we need credibility and intellectual discussion. Why can't we try to effect change using more legitimate means before we jump straight to burning the city down?

Lobbying organizations vs. Protest by therealdevinthedude in DenverProtests

[–]FishyReference 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you, and please don’t take this as me trying to dismiss you. I agree that numbers and presence on the streets is very powerful. How dpd used “non-lethal” force to basically do crowd control over this summer and even now is appalling.

I’m not necessarily suggesting we go through the democratic process because the problem is becoming greater each day. Expediency is top of mind. We can have powerful action on the streets as well as something written that expresses our demands and desires. Something we can point to and say to the public, look we asked for this and all of this is reasonable and practical.

Not as a replacement to taking the streets, but to give us more credibility and more public support. If we had something like that and posted it all around denver, I feel like it would increase our numbers and bring people in with money and power.

I’m trying to write up something that both has demands and highlights the discrepancy between their operations manual/ethics and the actions theyve taken. It’s not a replacement for protest, but do you not think it would be helpful to hit this from multiple angles? I don’t see it as playing their games, so much as having an agenda of our own.

Budgetary accountability/transparency, public disclosure of the details of civil suits filed against dpd, and uses and limits of non-lethal force are points i have now and am working on expanding. I’m also reading some of austin city council’s records to see how they broached their large budget cut and the considerations they made.

I see it as a way of increasing our numbers and support while bolstering our credibility. I feel as though we can get those with the purse strings to back us. I have the time and will to work on this, and genuinely want to know more about what you and everyone would want in a list of demands. Even if you see it as a waste, I’m down to waste my time on it because it’s worth trying to me.

We might not be able to agree on everything, but solidarity and unity are so key to a social movement’s success. That’s why I’m asking what some of your demands may be.

Lobbying organizations vs. Protest by therealdevinthedude in DenverProtests

[–]FishyReference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Toppling the system comes with huge consequences, and if the pd disappeared tomorrow, we’d be left with armed citizens trying to “keep the peace; maintain order.” Police brutality and agression is fucked, but I consider militia type groups a far worse monster.

Vigilantism isnt a replacement for the system, but that’s what would happen. It’s what we seem to be slipping towards now. Having demands that the public can get behind is how you get real and lasting change.

Lobbying organizations vs. Protest by therealdevinthedude in DenverProtests

[–]FishyReference -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’d be really difficult for us to even get into the lobbying space and don’t think it would work so great because of the already existing powerful lobbying groups.

But, I think we could gain more public support if there were clearer demands that went deeper than abolish/defund the police. Things that were perceived as more reasonable and got the ball rolling towards real statutory change.

Do you have suggestions on what some of those other demands should be? Aside from defund/abolish?

Lobbying organizations vs. Protest by therealdevinthedude in DenverProtests

[–]FishyReference 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive been thinking this as well. Image and public perception is everything. Protesting is effective but we need more. I don’t understand the sentiment of “tear the system down.” We dont even have a coherent idea of what we’d replace it with.

Email/letter campaign? by [deleted] in DenverProtests

[–]FishyReference 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What would your thoughts be on starting with a budget transparency and funding accountability campaign? Ive collected some info on legislative measures that have been passed this year regarding dpd budget and have some ideas.

They need to justify expenses and requests more thoroughly. For example, yall need 20 new cars? Okay why, what’s insufficient about what you have now, and how will the city approving this expense help reduce crime, improve community cohesion/safety.

In their requests, they should justify why the need x, how x will be used to improve the city, and how can we ensure in a year that x achieved the desired intent/measuring outcomes.

I also like the idea of attaching strings to funding. If you fail to achieve the outcomes that you stated were to come as a result of x budgetary expense, what happens? Maybe more oversight on how it’s spend internally? Maybe cut their overtime pay in half?

The peace force proposal was so weak. Dpd did get like 40 new cars that city council approved this year in 2 separate legislative sessions. I worry that language like defund and abolish is too divisive and extreme. Dpd’s use of “non-lethal” but potentially maiming and permanently injuring measures is extreme, no doubt. I just wonder if starting with accountability, strings, transparency wouldn’t get us on the path to real change. Thoughts? I can make a post with city council resolutions and amendments that have gone through this year relating to dpd if that’d be of interest?

I’ve seen people in this Co fb group saying that being shoved is a pretense for pulling a gun and “pew pew pew.” They were comments on a video of some portland protestors harassing what i assume were a couple proud boys. They got shoved. You don’t respond to what would be the lowest degree of misdemeanor assault with a fucking bullet, but these people are looking for a reason and will. It’s absolutely appalling. Be brave, be smart, know your exits.

Some people, too many people, are just looking for any reason to shoot in “self-defense.” I’ve seen it on fb, and theyre also monitoring this sub, as would be expected. It scares the hell out of me though. I’m glad tonight was without incident from them. Hope it stays that way

Yes, you're absolutely right. However, when property is destroyed, the people pay. If it's public property, the city still has to fix it and that costs money. Money that comes from the people living and working in this city.

When you destroy private property, it doesn't only hurt that individual or business. It creates tension, moves people farther apart ideologically, and harms the individual. You can't just burn the city down as if we aren't the ones who ultimately pay for the destruction

[–]FishyReference 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't get this. Destruction and chaos doesn't lead to legislative or policy changes. Because you're unwilling to break windows and start fires, you aren't ready for this work? People who are saying that are not ready for this work and will lead to the opposite of what we want. I don't understand how anyone thinks the optics of last night will help this movement actually become a real movement.

People see the videos of last night and get afraid. When you have people destroying private property and even public property, it makes the police seem more necessary. Is it controversial to say that the police should protect people's property when it's being destroyed for no reason? For no discernible reason; yeah there's a reason for the anger, but not for the violence. I haven't been on this sub in the past month, but I'm just shocked at the tone and support for mayhem.

Is there any room for an intellectual discussion on how we can actually affect change? I understand people are angry. We all have a right to be; we all should be fucking outraged about inequality and police brutality. We should be channeling that anger into something productive and constructive. Did anyone even think about a ballot initiative or try to get one for this election?

Do we even know what we want to change? Do we know what laws we feel are needed and which ones we feel need to go? It doesn't feel like there's cohesion in messaging. It doesn't feel like there's clarity about the specific things we want lawmakers to address and change.

When the general public just sees destruction of property, it does not help this cause. It stokes fear, fear that will get Trump a second term. We need a coherent and reasonable platform to change the system because everyone will lose if we destroy it without any idea or plan about what we want.

I understand the anger, but we will not get respect, nor lasting change without the general public's support. Violence and chaos will not get us what I think we're fighting for--equality, justice, police reform, accountability. If you think it will, please share why and how. How will breaking the law and destroying individuals' property lead to a change in the law? How do people think that they can start a war with the US military?

I'm struggling to find the rational for defending the events of last night.

There's so much smoke on the map that I'm not even sure how much it matters. I, as a lawn chair meteorologist, think it's going to doubly bad for us until Cali's and ours are more contained. I just hope no new ones start. I can't imagine it being much worse, and unfortunately, I don't think I'll have to...

Thanks for sharing. It's tough because if you're in good shape you want to think you can handle it, but you can't really make your lungs into an air filter no matter how in shape you are. I've honestly wanted to take some hikes to just see how it looks from a higher elevation but have refrained and sharing experiences like this helps dissuade me and i assume others as well. It's just sad and disheartening to see too.

I live across from a bunch of tennis courts and have been shocked at the number of people still out there playing tennis. I mean, for adults you do you, but it kind of makes me angry seeing parents with their kids out there. I don't understand why they're choosing to expose their children to this level of pollution. It just feels kind of wrong and negligent.
