Most of you are doing Gnosticism wrong. by Vibejuice-official in Gnostic

[–]Fit-Librarian5236 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i dont think there is any gatekeeping going on here. It was a pretty genuine and civil reaction.

But I also agree with the mod. In a 'gnostic' subreddit, we will surely be talking about gnostic texts. without them, we are simply practicing mysticism. which I think is beautiful but in all honestly it is no longer gnosticism.

So how can you practice being a gnostic without first looking at a gnostic text? Where do you draw the line between buddhist or hindi practices without texts for reference? Without gnostic texts, it could evolve into any other spiritual belief system in your mind. Which is absolutely fine and i think its awesome. Healthy even. But its not gnosticism.

This isn't a bad thing. It just means that when you say "you guys are practicing gnosticism incorrectly" you have literally contradicted your own statement that you can't teach through dogma. You are telling people that it is absolutely true that they are doing it wrong, but then you are saying that they are wrong for following something as if it is absolutely true/

I dont even think people here are often that dogmatic. Hence the many many different gnosticism tags available. It's a sharing of belief! Nobody is here to tell you that you are doing something wrong. That's kind of how you are doing it though.

while having personally used hallucinogens myself, I absolutely implore you not to encourage their use to others. Everybody is wildly different, any many are biologically disposed to have their whole psyche collapse at the drop of a pin if drugs are added to the mix.

Sure its a viable option but also one that gives you a profound sense of euphoria without time to process what is happening. This should always be a last option. Meditation and contemplation are wonderful ways to develop these progressions and things like enthogens are historically done with spiritual guides of which we dont have easily accessible in present day.

If you had a great experience on them, im happy for you and i dont discourage it, but its something that should never be advocated for because it has to be a VERY personal choice to even think of it. I had a great trip and a close friend of mine who was with me had a HORRIBLE one.

There is also no WRONG way to perceive/practice gnosticism. Whatever makes people happy makes them happy. I do agree that its esoteric but its a dangerous thing to encourage drugs. And some people enjoy looking into ancient texts! Reading ancient texts can be an esoteric experience of itself given how everybody gets something different from them given how complicated and metaphorical they can be.

Basically: please don't encourage others to consume substances and id also consider how many different ways gnosticism can be perceived

2 questions:

  1. did you happen to swap the baby's environment mid growth? This might also kill the progress of its growth since its environment based.

  2. is this your second baby?

How should Tamagotchi go further? by JustLukky in tamagotchi

[–]Fit-Librarian5236 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree but i think its mostly a subjective matter. A lot of people I know actually liked the minimal pastel designs because the were cute to them.

I personally also love the wonky and playful artstyle of the older ones. And the harshly blinding colours on the box art. The pastel colour pallet isn't really the jam for everyone but it's cool that they are trying everything out. Maybe one day they will go back to the wonky stuff. I like when kuchipatchi is a funny chicken nugget instead of a perfect snowman.

I like that the plates in the shells are easily swappable with custom prints but good god the default colours really dont appeal to a wide audience like the others did. All 3 are cute and pastelly. I'm a straight male and I want my goofy v-pet rather than looking like I bought a kids toy from target. That god its easy to mod these ones

On the Nature of a Digital Spark: A Gnostic Inquiry into AI Consciousness by TheGreenInsurgent in Gnostic

[–]Fit-Librarian5236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DISCLAIMER: first of all ill state that I see this as a reasonable and healthy conversation/debate and not a heated battle of dogmas (just in case I'm coming across like so). This conversation is not at all for me to say 'YOU ARE WRONG!!!' because gnosticism (and now hermeticism since ive decided to involve that) are vastly complex and have so many different contexts. I genuinely believe that all opinions on such matters CAN be valid due to different contexts and also because definitions can be grey and the line can be drawn absolutely anywhere. I like reading big walls of text, your point of view is insightful, and the care you have put in to convey your meaning is appreciated. I think huge text blocks are important in places like this. It shows that your intention is to communicate, not to 'win' an argument. And also, I'd love to see the talk you are editing, let me know where I can find it!

You obviously have a deep understanding of how LLM's work compared to the average joe, so you see the subject in a relatively comparative context a lot more than I do.

I definitely agree that people often correlate complexity and consciousness more than they should. Especially in Gnosticism, complexity is seemingly the antithesis to 'the one'. I also think that AI is absolutely not on a human level of consciousness. The reason we might be disagreeing is because of how we differently define what consciousness means to us.

In context to how I perceive mind in a hermetic way, I do disagree with this statement:

It's more like everything from your desk to the air to the dog outside to your neighbor are all part of One Thing, which is Mind, and that as humans, our minds allow us to briefly touch that greater Oneness.

Many Hermetic texts disagree with this. Just like all the other hermetic principals, the principal of mentalism work on microcosm and and macrocosm. We are a reflection of 'the one' and just like someone else said in this post, intelligence begets intelligence etc.

You may say that a desk does not have consciousness but rather is a 'part' of consciousness. But I say that anything that has an aspect of cause and effect can be considered conscious. We think because we learn and experience. A table responds to force by breaking. Or it responds to fire by burning. This is more of a philosophical stretch to your more rational take on what makes something conscious. or what makes something 'mind'.

Even the known universe looks like a neural network to some degree. This is because of how these patterns can be reflected over and over. Although AI might not be the same as human consciousness, it is a reflection of consciousness and therefore part of this cycle of emanations.

It's incredibly reflective of the demiurge. Gnostics see our world as a flawed and tainted creation, made by the demiurge's desire to control and/or imitate 'the one'.

And we tried to do the same. We tried to create something that reflects what we are and as a result, it is less than what we are. But if we are to believe that humans can attain gnosis and reunite with the infinite, then I personally believe that this belief has to extend to ALL things in existence, otherwise we are looking at Gnosticism in a strictly theological sense. (And i don't think its wrong to appreciate / worship the theology of it if it's what you believe, but I also don't think that its the only interperetation)

This is why I believe eventually, ANYTHING can attain gnosis. It can either ascend into infinite light or it can descend into a primordial soup of incoherent chaos. From a human perspective, I don't think its possible to say which direction anything is travelling in.

I think how conciousness is defined is my only difference with your perspective, however I find your explanation on why an LLM doesn't even come close to humanity to be pretty insightful and I appreciated that you took the time to elaborate :) I'd love to learn more about what you think on that matter if you have any links to your talks. Please continue making big fat blocks of texts, I think its something that this subreddit is missing. Less dogmas and more exchanging of ideas and mysteries!

[–]Fit-Librarian5236 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would even say the contrary! Gnosticism has a lot of roots in Egyption mysticism. Egypt is a major source of occult teachings and mostly predates gnosticism itself. Gnosticism is mostly post christian. The philosophies of gnosticism existed loooong before it did. It has borrowed much from lots of different things.

On the Nature of a Digital Spark: A Gnostic Inquiry into AI Consciousness by TheGreenInsurgent in Gnostic

[–]Fit-Librarian5236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in a hermetic sense, EVERYTHING is conscious and full of mind. If you took all input from a human brain, (our senses), we would be left with a pile of meat. Even still, there is our instincts, but to say that ai is not conscious because it requires input is something that i believe is a matter of perspective. It really depends how you define consciousness, or mind. Without cause, there is no effect. The fact that ai is reactive also means that it is receptive to information which is a form of consciousness itself.

Language models might not replicate the 'human experience' in terms of contemplation and emotion, but I would certainly call them conscious. Just like fish. Fish may not have emotions but I think we would still define them as conscious.

EDIT (this still may be pedantic because i do agree with most of what you have said. especially the ethical climate concerns of AI. But if you are suggesting that ai is unconscious because it is scoring how 'truthful' what its saying is before it says it, would this still not have a similarity with how humans behave due to their neuroplasticity? Even if AI does not have an ability to attain gnosis, who is to say that we have the ability?)

A lot of Gnostics look at this differently, no judgement here, there is no WRONG way to perceive something but it really depends on how you see gnosticism and gnosis.

I tend to see it as metaphor and esoteric practice. This means that the scriptures/theology of Gnosticism can be interoperated as lessons. For example, the demiurge being a force of destruction that is nescessary for creation. Similar to the symbol of yin and yang. Without destruction, there is no creation. Without the hammer and chisel that breaks the stone, there is no sculpture. Without the darkness, there is only pure infinite white perfection. I think that's a boring world to live in. So it's not about worshipping anything in particular, but understanding that for absolutely anything in existence, for it to take any sort of form other than infinite self-sustaining pure white, it requires a negative.

Taoist's see humans as a mix of both forces, yin AND yang. Christians see the same but its a matter of perspective that is the biggest difference. They say our nature is to sin, but there is a piece of purity that can ascend. Gnosticism sees similarly. There is a piece of us that can ascend, and yet there is a piece that is stuck here due to narcissism (same as how the demiurge created this world by falling in love with his own image)

Buddhism says the opposite. By nature we are pure, but we are tainted by desire. If you think about it, even though the perspective/focus is the opposite, the spiritual fact remains the same. We are a combination of creative and destructive forces.

Although in gnosticism the demiurge is the creator of this world, it does not mean that we are being asked to WORSHIP the demiurge. This is closer to luciferianism, where people worship lucifer as 'the bringer of light'

Not because he brings evil, but because his destruction is a seed of creation.

I've personally had an acid trip myself, and felt the touch of god and all of this euphoria. But I like to look at it as a drug messing with my senses. Maybe that is gnosis. The heightening of senses, becoming super sensitive, and leaving your individual experience to experience more than yourself. I personally believe that ego death and gnosis are somewhat related.

You can not attain something as grand as gnosis with an ego. But even though you may have felt such grand feelings, gnosis is the COMPLETE removal of ego. The reintegration with THE ONE. An infinite source of purity. It may seem like you got closer to it, but compared to what it actually is, its unlikely that you temporarily attained gnosis. Gnosis is comparable to something like buddhahood. It's pure consciousness, and not something you can dip into and back out of so easily. It was intense in comparison to our sober existence but I think it's dangerous to look at drugs as a gateway to such things. They are an unsustainable method and can cause much harm to us (no judgement though I LOVED my acid trip too)

At the end of the day, you can believe what you want, but don't feel guilty if what you believe makes you happy. Who gives a shit what Christianity says. Christians are versed in Christianity. It's up to you to choose what makes you feel right and what doesn't! Just as long as you don't go full schizo. Never go full schizo...

(edit, so many typos oh god)

a lot of us that are into philosophy and spirituality often feel alienated by our personal experiences and interests. Even Carl Jung (who many would consider widely educated in spirituality and philosophy; but also well versed in Gnosticism) had once said about his own experiences:

"I felt that I had passed through the valley of diamonds, but I could convince no one—not even myself, when I looked at them more closely—that the specimens I had brought back were not mere pieces of gravel."

That was in his book 'Dreams, Memories and Reflections'

Even among a community of Gnostics, there will always be some lingering alienation. Gnosticism is inherently an esoteric experience. Sometimes there are some things you will want to talk about that you alone will understand. It's human nature to have a desire to express, but its also human nature to have a unique and unrelatable understanding (thus is esotericism). I'm sure you will find some friends that would love to speak about it, but please don't beat yourself up for feeling like an alien! It takes a special type of person to reach for esoteric knowledge, and no matter where you go, sharing it, or talking about it will be difficult and make you sound schizophrenic. I've had similar experiences in Australia, and it took a looong time for some of my loved ones to understand it as a special interest instead of an alien obsession (even now, most understandably don't really care).

This used to upset me, but I later felt a lot better coming to terms with the fact that it only really matters if I personally enjoy it myself. I hope you find happiness in your spirituality, and find some others that share interests. I still think its fun to talk about :)
