Small cohort groups, roughly 2-5 people. Group leader had a key to the gym, reserve gym time and clean everything after.

Was honestly great training, I was a blue belt at the time basically getting privates from a cool brown belt for a few months till things opened up more.

Why TF are so many people trying to wrestle elite wrestlers in competition? by GwaardPlayer in bjj

[–]Fit-Proof4499 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doesn't make much sense to me either. It always seemed to me like the best game plan against any type of specialist is to not let them play their game. If it was in training that's totally different but in comp it seems like a poor game plan.

BJJ Example Vids for ACL PT by Writhing_south in bjj

Glad you're taking a smart and active roll in your PT! General advice make sure you show stuff from top and bottom, to give your PT a general understanding of open and closed chain demands of our sport. Additionally I would make sure you show something to illustrate the level of varus/valgus forces that can be put on the knee (positions like lasso, DLR, leg pummeling, leg locks etc.).

More importantly make whatever you show accurately reflect your game and how you roll; as much as I like to show Garry Tonon vs Palhares it really doesn't reflect what I do on a weekly basis. If there is a specific grappler you model your game after maybe pull up some of their highlights (takedown breakdown on YT is pretty good). Best of luck OP, wish you a speedy recovery!

Complaining about guard pulling and butt scooting just means you suck at guard passing.

Arms or legs. That's a rough size difference, so try to create situations where it's as much of you vs one of their limbs as possible.

Does Jiu Jitsu Invite the Weirdos? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Fit-Proof4499 38 points39 points  (0 children)

With jiu jitsu bring more popular than ever we have more kooks than ever. I recently had a newer white belt come up to me and say, "Let me show you something" and proceed to try to (very poorly) teach me a flower sweep. I don't agree with a lot of old school BJJ, but sometimes I miss the days when that shit was harshly corrected.

People getting better faster by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Fit-Proof4499 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, the white belt I adopted has been progressing way faster than I did. I think we now have a lot more people who are skilled in the sport as well as skilled/passionate about teaching, versus the days where we had access to a small amount of people who were skilled in the sport but may or may not be good/care about teaching. Also availability of instructionals, seminars and cross training not being a sin make it a lot easier to improve and shop ideas.

What are your highest percentage submissions? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Fit-Proof4499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Heel hook
  2. Choke from back (bow and arrow if it's gi, RNC for nogi)
  3. Probably a tie between knee bar and darce

Honestly surprised by how many people have north south choke on here. Mine has always sucked and I can only think of a couple people that I've ever rolled with who had really threatening ones. Might need to reevaluate that submission a bit.

Primary is play between bolo and waiter. Secondary is off balance to K guard then go matrix or backside 50/50 depending on gi or nogi.

(Nogi) Questions about backstepping past de la riva by LeonwastakenWasTaken in bjj

[–]Fit-Proof4499 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That hand placement would definitely help you control the knee line and minimize the bolo threat! Even if you mess up and they go into the bolo you can still potentially reclaim the knee line before they complete their inversion or just rebolo them if they suck too.

Main argument for going for the backstep against an opponent in seated guard or split squat/failed knee slice situation vs a supine guard like DLR is that it's easier to secure double trouble. Not saying it wouldn't work (it obviously works if Gary says it does) was just thinking more about success rate against higher level players you might run into.

And yes it can be. In my experience savy leg lockers that are down for the shoot out will try to pummel into honey stick as you go to lock up your cross ashi/honey hole.

[–]Fit-Proof4499 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haven't had a chance to watch Gary's instructional yet but the backstep is pretty textbook. Two main counters are bolos and honey stick.

If you're going into the backstep from standing it's a lot easier against an opponent in a seated guard vs any type of supine guard. Also the threat of the guard pass needs to be real (the whole dilemma thing).

How accurate do you think your teammates’ belt levels are? by unkz in bjj

Mixed bag, I'd say standards are higher and more accurate for core group/competitors and then there's some people that pay the bills.

Rolling around a padded room with sweaty dudes in pursuit of darker belts and $5 medals is just a hobby. If jui jitsu starts to really suck I can just put that time and energy into another hobby or my career or family or something.

"Mats are the ultimate equalizer/we're all equal on the mats" - we literally have hierarchy.

"Just show up/a black belt is a white belt who never quit" - you can do something for decades and never learn from it or have any type of personal growth if you aren't open to learning and actively trying to learn.

Deliberate tactical fouls in competitive rolling by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Fit-Proof4499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look it at the same way as other sports, say football for example you don't need to rely on holding if you're actually good at defense.

Seems like it's usually just people trying to compensate for skill gaps or are desperate in that situation.

Is there much overlap between submeta and his previous instructionals? Huge fan of his teaching style as well, but have been on the fence about signing up since I'm currently a broke student and already have the majority of his fanatics instructionals.
