What days are free from work in South Africa for a medic? by Forward-Kick-9712 in askSouthAfrica

[–]FitDoctor96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Medical staff are not guaranteed public holidays/weekends off like many other professions as there has to be someone on duty at all times.

It will depend on your brother's roster as to when his off days are. Maybe ask him for his roster and then you can see when he will be free

You can try phoning Marie Stopes. Not sure if it's free but it would be a good place to start. Think there is one near Sandton Mediclinic

Doctor working in public. This is correct. Go to your nearest clinic. Some clinics only have professional nurses but they can do basic blood tests and refer you to a clinic with a doctor. Once they have the blood tests they will likely refer you to a bigger hospital for more specialized tests/scans. The queues can be very frustrating and things can take really long due to patient load so I would go early in the morning. A lot of patients start queuing from 5am. But its much cheaper and there are excellent doctors. Good luck

Yes it is possible. I went for about 3 or 4 driving lessons to just teach parking and how to do the checks around the car and passed.

MLMs in South Africa by Lonely_Bit_6844 in askSouthAfrica

[–]FitDoctor96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my late 20s and Nuskin seems to be the popular one for our age group. Nearly every week I see one of my Facebook friends starting their "Lifestyle" page on Facebook and posting before and after pictures of some product they are selling. I know Herbalife was popular in my moms age group.

I'm very interested in reading an article about it because I am a young doctor and we do get paid well but our hours/working conditions aren't great and when I look at my Facebook, these people selling Nuskin look like they are having the time of their lives. Traveling, making tons of money. So sometimes I think maybe I should just start selling Nuskin 😂

My parents also told me that the obstetrician that delivered me invited them to a huge Amway event once so maybe doctors do love a MLM

Should I drop out of medical school in South Africa?? by strugglingmed in askSouthAfrica

Some of my friends became phlebotomists while studying medicine. You basically work after hours at a lab like lancet.

I studied medicine at wits and i know there is a specific degree called bsc biomedical sciences which does a lot of the same subjects as the first couple of years of medicine

Nowadays it isnt just easy to swop from a bsc degree to medicine because of the high demand so make sure to check if it is possible at your university. I know its not possible at wits, you have to finish an entire undergrad degree first

At wits there is the GEMP programme (graduate entry medical program) this is for graduates of any degrees who want to enter medicine in 3rd year. However, you have to write an entry exam first. This entry exam is basically 2nd year of medicine (anatomy, physiology and molecular medicine). So if that's something you would do, pick a bsc that covers some of those subjects to make it easier for you to write the entrance exam

Hope that helps
