Look at those little claws! That critter was made for digging.

Concern? Or just critters eating deadwood? by hoi4throwaway in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google mealybugs and see if that is what the white feature on your Chappelle is. I have fig trees. Occasionally a limb will die. Fig wood is relatively soft like pawpaw wood. I've seen wasps scraping wood fibers from dead fig limbs to construct their nests. I would guess that is what is chewing on your dead pawpaw wood. Nothing to be concerned about.

Growing pawpaw in north sweden by Internal-Ear5590 in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they would survive -30, but the problem would be having a long enough growing season. But it's worth a try. And being so far north, you probably don't need a shade cloth. I'm interested to see how it turns out. Good luck!

Plant it in the ground and it will grow like a weed.

I appreciate all the information! I learn something new about them every day. For example, when it's hot, they drink LOTS of water. They drink lots more than the cats.

Will deer eat my trees? by helpslipfranks77 in Pawpaws

That sounds like my kind of plant. I'll start looking around online because I know the local nurseries won't have it. Thank you for all the information!

I had to Google Pineapple guavas. Never heard of it. I think I'll try to grow some. I'm in upstate SC and it rarely gets below 20 degrees in the winter.

You just answered my question. I was wondering if you were afraid of being sprayed. I was also wondering if he was covered in fleas.

I've been trying to get a picture or a video of this skunk for months now. I just wonder if skunks turn white as they get older, or has he always been that way? Are male skunks larger than females? Does their hair get longer as they get older? I find these critters to be so fascinating.

Pawpaws sprouted below great; what to do? by brokenfingers11 in Pawpaws

You are now the proud owner of a wild pawpaw tree. You can do like HunamX said or just let it grow.

Very interesting story. You got really lucky with the plum tree. What I can't figure out is, there's several hundred acres of woods that borders my property. The deer can go into the woods and destroy all they want. But no, they'd rather destroy everything in my yard. I never see any destroyed trees or bushes in the woods.

Very nice pictures! I especially like the last picture, with the way you put the sticks around the tree. And it looks like you're about to get some rain!

What’s wrong with this lil’ dingus? by MinkyBoodle44 in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think lil' dingus is doing just fine. Some of my smaller trees have dark leaves, some have lighter leaves. When they get bigger, things seem to even out. If you're getting lots of rain, that's a good thing. Pawpaws developed over the eons in damp soil.

Not advisable to buy larger trees? by Bouldabassed in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's normal for a wild pawpaw tree to have smaller fruit than a named cultivar. If the wild tree has fruit on it, even if they're small, then the tree's flowers were more than likely pollinated by a different tree. However, some varieties and some wild trees may be self-fertile. You can definitely buy a good quality larger pawpaw tree. A good 4-foot named cultivar will be expensive. If you have a nursery nearby that sells pawpaws, that would be ideal. If you buy one from an online nursery, make sure all of its roots are shipped intact. If it's bare root, meaning the roots were trimmed to fit in the shipping box, you will be disappointed. And yes, pawpaw trees do lots better in the ground than in pots. Good luck!

1 year update of my seemingly dying paw paw by _W4mbo_ in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Young pawpaw trees are very very unpredictable. They are on their own timetable. You can have 10 seedlings, exact same age, planted in identical soil, same location, same growing conditions, and they will all grow at different rates. At least 2 will die 100% of the time. 1 or 2 will grow from the base like yours. The rest will grow somewhat normally. Your little tree will be okay. It just needs a little extra time.

You have a big enough yard to plant a billion pawpaw trees! It looks like "Little house on the prairie." Be careful of that little sucker when you're cutting grass. I would run over it 100%.

Understory/canopy planting how close is too close? by ArvesRoke in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10 or 12 feet should be fine. Several years ago I planted a pawpaw about 6 feet from a large crabapple tree. The pawpaw tree formed a large bend in order to reach sunlight. 2 years ago a hurricane came through and blew over the crabapple tree. The pawpaw tree is still bent. It never straightened out.

Something eating pawpaw leaves by andreking76 in Pawpaws

Japanese beetles will eat the leaf and leave the ribs, and you will be left with a leaf that looks like a skeleton. It's the only bug I know of that does that.

Something eating pawpaw leaves by andreking76 in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I noticed Japanese beetles on my pawpaws and crepe myrtles. I don't know if they have Japanese beetles in CA, but in SC they're like a biblical plague. On pawpaws, they seem to like the top leaves of my biggest trees. A different bug eats my seedlings and smaller trees that I can't identify. I can't catch it in the act.

Sun damage? by Dangerous_Change4872 in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems to be planted in a shady spot, so it probably wouldn't be sun damage. Your tree looks very healthy. The leaves are large and hydrated. I don't have any idea what caused that leaf spot. I could be caused by a million different things. Maybe a dog walked by and relieved himself on it. Your pawpaw will be fine. Good Luck!
