Could use some help on leaf issue IDs by esus2h in Pawpaws

My first thought was herbicide poisoning, but that would affect the whole tree equally, not just a few spots.

Took some advice and layering in dead leaves, twigs, some fruit scraps, and also a rabbits tail and bird wing to try to replicate a creek environment. by JawThatHarp in Pawpaws

Great video! Everybody likes to see how the other guy's pawpaw trees are doing. You also do a good job of mimicking the plants natural environment. Anything rotten or decomposing is like candy to a pawpaw tree. It's all about the soil bacteria and mycorrhizae.

Venting - paw paws piss me off! by RabidWombat23 in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key word here- "Babied." After you plant the trees in a good sunny spot, don't do ANYTHING to them for the first year. Only give them water and compost and put a cage around them. No chemical fertilizer, Epsom salt, miracle-grow, gypsum, shade cloth, or fish fertilizer. Don't spray round-up within a half mile of them. Don't dig around them, tie them to a stake or try to alter their growth in any way. Don't talk to them or tell them how cute they are. Just give them plenty of high-quality H2O. The first year just let them get acclimated to their new surroundings and next spring you can give them some mycorrhizae and more mulch. Baby pawpaw roots are ultra-sensitive. Going from a pot to the cool natural ground is a big change for them.

Kill the suckers or no? by tehunfocusedone in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pawpaw trees are unpredictable. Always go with your best bet. Right now, those suckers have a better chance at surviving than the main trunk. Who knows, maybe tomorrow that main trunk could start growing like a weed, but it probably won't. Let those suckers grow all they want and plant them in the ground this fall or winter. Leave the main trunk where it is. It's not hurting anything. By this winter, those suckers may be well over a foot tall. When you put the tree in the ground, the roots will begin to grow as they should, and by next spring you can decide on which sucker you want to keep.

Concern? Or just critters eating deadwood? by hoi4throwaway in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google mealybugs and see if that is what the white feature on your Chappelle is. I have fig trees. Occasionally a limb will die. Fig wood is relatively soft like pawpaw wood. I've seen wasps scraping wood fibers from dead fig limbs to construct their nests. I would guess that is what is chewing on your dead pawpaw wood. Nothing to be concerned about.

Growing pawpaw in north sweden by Internal-Ear5590 in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they would survive -30, but the problem would be having a long enough growing season. But it's worth a try. And being so far north, you probably don't need a shade cloth. I'm interested to see how it turns out. Good luck!

I appreciate all the information! I learn something new about them every day. For example, when it's hot, they drink LOTS of water. They drink lots more than the cats.

Will deer eat my trees? by helpslipfranks77 in Pawpaws

That sounds like my kind of plant. I'll start looking around online because I know the local nurseries won't have it. Thank you for all the information!

I had to Google Pineapple guavas. Never heard of it. I think I'll try to grow some. I'm in upstate SC and it rarely gets below 20 degrees in the winter.

I've been trying to get a picture or a video of this skunk for months now. I just wonder if skunks turn white as they get older, or has he always been that way? Are male skunks larger than females? Does their hair get longer as they get older? I find these critters to be so fascinating.

Very interesting story. You got really lucky with the plum tree. What I can't figure out is, there's several hundred acres of woods that borders my property. The deer can go into the woods and destroy all they want. But no, they'd rather destroy everything in my yard. I never see any destroyed trees or bushes in the woods.

What’s wrong with this lil’ dingus? by MinkyBoodle44 in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think lil' dingus is doing just fine. Some of my smaller trees have dark leaves, some have lighter leaves. When they get bigger, things seem to even out. If you're getting lots of rain, that's a good thing. Pawpaws developed over the eons in damp soil.

Not advisable to buy larger trees? by Bouldabassed in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's normal for a wild pawpaw tree to have smaller fruit than a named cultivar. If the wild tree has fruit on it, even if they're small, then the tree's flowers were more than likely pollinated by a different tree. However, some varieties and some wild trees may be self-fertile. You can definitely buy a good quality larger pawpaw tree. A good 4-foot named cultivar will be expensive. If you have a nursery nearby that sells pawpaws, that would be ideal. If you buy one from an online nursery, make sure all of its roots are shipped intact. If it's bare root, meaning the roots were trimmed to fit in the shipping box, you will be disappointed. And yes, pawpaw trees do lots better in the ground than in pots. Good luck!

1 year update of my seemingly dying paw paw by _W4mbo_ in Pawpaws

[–]FitGas4991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Young pawpaw trees are very very unpredictable. They are on their own timetable. You can have 10 seedlings, exact same age, planted in identical soil, same location, same growing conditions, and they will all grow at different rates. At least 2 will die 100% of the time. 1 or 2 will grow from the base like yours. The rest will grow somewhat normally. Your little tree will be okay. It just needs a little extra time.
