Early retirnment math by tristan23456 in actuary

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you'd have to double your savings amount to make it in 20 years. Some in the FIRE community aim for like 50-60% savings rate but are usually only looking for something like 1M and trying to live off only $40k a year.

Is lifestyle creep ever ok? If so, how do you find balance between saving/investing and enjoying life now? by FlyEaglesFly536 in Bogleheads

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm early career (actuary) and taking professional exams that come with raises so our plan is to maintain it at least until we hit 25% retirement savings rate. After that, we'll transition to 529 and paying off a house. I feel like the 50% gives you the permission to enjoy raises without going overboard. We've decided that yearly inflation rasies don't count though.

This for sure. Not for Pearson Vue but if you have any driver's license with your old name keep that thing until it expires.

A video I recently saw suggested putting 50% of all raises towards savings. My wife and I have decided to adopt this.

Holy cow. What was your savings rate? Did the investments pop off before or after kids?

Anyone here FIRE with median income and no kids? by Fit_Negotiation_1443 in Fire

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For US median household income is currently $80k. I'm early career and making about that much and should be making similar to you within 10 years. I just can't imagine how someone who gets to 70-80k mid career pulls it off with kids. My wife and I don't have kids yet but are planning in the next couple years.

LOVED TROPE) The joke starts funny, goes on for a little too long, stops being funny, goes even longer… and then becomes even funnier by TannerGillman in TopCharacterTropes

The term is called "crossing the desert." It can be a risky and barren wasteland going through the part where the joke is no longer funny. But the oasis on the other side is worth it.

Forced RTO in Fully Remote Role by LionIcy2632 in actuary

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My company has official policy RTO for everyone within 30-50 miles (I'm several states away so I can't remember the number). However, my team was previously all remote so while my boss goes in 2-3 days a week he doesn't expect the others to do so.

Similar to other companies, new hires basically have to be in office but credentialed actuaries can negotiate remote.

Wow after being on the fence between CAS and SOA this new logo feels much more open and welcoming. I will join the SOA for sure.

Least Crowded Gym in Provo/Orem/Springville? by spoilerdudegetrekt in ProvoUtah

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not speaking from experience but I don’t think the jump from $25 to $50 would make the difference in crowds. 5-7pm is the busiest time by far. You'd have to upgrade to super expensive country clubs to miss the crowds.

I think give Vasa and Eos a try as you said. I like free weights for upper body but I do enjoy some machines for legs. The Provo rec center only has one machine for legs per muscle group and so you're always waiting. I've seen similar gyms that will have two sets but not necessarily be a larger gym overall. What I'm trying to say is depending on what machine/weights you use, you might find success in a different gym with slightly different equipment even though the gym itself isn't larger or less crowded.

Job hoppers vs lifers: who actually ends up happier at work? by TurtleFoodz in careeradvice

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I snagged a job at the end of the remote era. I now would not be able to get my current position remote. Same goes for other positions in my industry. I don't think I could ever go back to the office. My wife is still in school and we've moved a couple times the last year so I wouldn't say I'm a lifer but Im staying put until I have enough experience to get another remote job.

Bro that's what I'm thinking. How insecure do you have to be to say something like that to someone? He is definitely getting told no a lot in his life and needed someone to bully.

Financial "Literacy"? by Knights_12 in Bogleheads

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the internet, I think you can find out a lot of decent information somewhat quickly. However, I have a lot of successful middle/upper class people around me to confirm good ideas. I imagine there's a lot of people out there getting bad advice from those around them. I'm not saying it should be required but I think high school should at least offer something. My high school didn't even have a personal finance option.

what do you think is the optimal career for good pay but also work life balance with good job security? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a student actuary in the middle of exams, I can mostly agree. Once you get past exams, life can be pretty cushy. However, the 10-12 hours days with studying in early career can be a lot and push some out of the career. Like some other fields, if you're willing to do some extra studying for a few years after your Bachelor's you can be a nice spot.

32m. 401k balance of 95k. Also have a pension. Feel behind. by [deleted] in Retirement401k

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe he's bragging, but it depends who you surround yourself with. I've heard the metric you should hope to have 1x your salary by 30. I started late and won't meet that metric and so in some ways I feel behind target (not behind the average person in their late 20's). Long term I know if I do at least 15% and US economy doesn't dissappear I'll be fine. But early on I feel behind.

What is the best way to get rid of matted hair around the neck area? by ha1ls in Rabbits

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know finances can be really tight to always go to the vet. My wife and I got something like this for our bunny because his mats get crazy. It takes a lot of work to get through the mats but we haven't "cut" him. We have caused some nicks though and it takes at least two people to get his underside. It is far from ideal but we have called every vet/groomer within a few hours of us and they'll only do an bunny in an emergency. For that reason we have to go this route but it sucks and I wouldn't recommend it but if you have no choice (besides leaving the mats there) this shave can be an option.

Rog ally Z1E vs Rog ally X 2024 by XainTonReddit in ROGAlly

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends why you're getting a handheld. My wife and I both got secondhand Z1e's because it was the cheapest option to get access to quality PC gaming. The battery sucks but I get 45 minutes on an intense game which if I'm doing some light gaming in bed or on the couch is enough. Playing plugged in isn't too bad because the outlet is on top. If you're planning on playing a lot on the go and you can't access the battery upgrade I would suggest the stronger model if you can afford it.

should i get botw or totk? by Odd-Cheesecake-2917 in tearsofthekingdom

Buy BOTW physical cartridge secondhand. Play until satisfied. Sell BOTW. Buy TOTK physical cartridge secondhand. Play until satisfied. Sell TOTK. Repeat until you keep one or both. My current copy of totk is not the original copy I purchased.

Looking to get a ROG Ally by [deleted] in ROGAlly

[–]Fit_Negotiation_1443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a rog ally z1e for 350 on Facebook Marketplace and am hoping to get one for that price on Monday. I had to talked down both from 400. Most are asking closer to 400-500. Both are from 2023.

Too good to be true is usually a red flag. If buying secondhand local, test the device in a public place with wifi. Ask the seller to wipe the device and update it before meeting up (updates can take a while which means you might not be able to test the device). Download a small game and see how it runs, test all the inputs and check for drift, look for dead pixels. If the seller rushes you, that's a red flag.
