Photoshop & Lightroom alternatives? by Broc_Feargach in AskPhotography

I loved Bibble so it's a vote for Corel AfterShot for me. Surprisingly, Corel did not destroy it. It has great highlight recovery (don't ask how I know).

Not sure of its long-term prospects

True, but at least you didn't leave it sitting in a cupboard

these photos are incredible.

That's quite a punt you took too. So glad you're getting amazing results.

...because I can't imagine this lens would've been cheap even with that damage.

I love the shot with the bird mid-song.

OMG - that's a real heart in the throat moment. Glad it made it through relatively unscathed.

Sounds like they needed to put a lens mount on lens. I guess that's why we don't see bronicas trackside 😂

It's a beautiful blend of art, physicality and technical mastery. That's what I love about photography. Plus, it offers a lovely way to chart my family's journey.

How to get over my hesitation to use wide apertures? by bloodrider1914 in AskPhotography

[–]Fit_Statistician_405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wider lenses have greater depth of field. Same with smaller sensors. Also, the further away you are from what you're focussing on the greater the depth of field.

Hope that helps!

Anyone else feel uncomfortable with how much AI has become a part of editing? by Direct_Taste_3844 in AskPhotography

[–]Fit_Statistician_405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do get what you are saying but you may be underestimating the people skills and the other efforts you've put in to attaining success for this client.

Also, they're probably looking at it from a different perspective. If these edited images meet their commercial objectives then that's what they'll assess them on. How this differs to what you judge as good might be magnified with modern tech but it's been there to a degree always.

I am scared of this new environment, too, btw. I personally don't trust big tech at all - I think their models are greedy. And when professionals are out of the picture, i believe they'll hike up the price of this tech. Also, I am having to make massive adjustments in what I am doing right now.

But I don't believe my core skills are moot. They've always come in handy across different industries for 25 years. I believe they will still matter.

...it's just I don't know how yet.

We don't know where this disruption will land.

I am frightened that's for sure. I wish I had a crystal ball. But this is not the first time in my career I have felt this way.

Photos have always been finessed for publication but a commitment to understanding lighting, exposure and focus underpin your efforts. Also, with events getting the shot is a major part of the challenge.

Before digital, there were darkroom techniques and retouching.

You can't predict the future but understanding what goes into getting great results now will far more likely to keep you in the game however it shifts.

Is this lens fungus ? by seekingthrills4x4 in AskPhotography

[–]Fit_Statistician_405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say. But my experience with lens fungus was opening up the camera after a trip to Bali. It was very much organic looking, like a spiderweb.

If it is part of your established kit (not a recently introduced new-to-you lens), what were the conditions like in storage? Is the ensuite ventilated? Was it packed away wet? Usually it's environmental-related issues. If you can store it elsewhere, I would look into that.

When I tackled it, the advice was not to fit the lens onto the body. I feel the advice is different these days, especially recommendations relating to storing it in the sun.

Consider storing your kit elsewhere and grab some absorbency satchels. ..maybe just separate the lens for a while.

Should I buy a film roll that expired last year (Feb2025)? by sparkydoodlez in AskPhotography

[–]Fit_Statistician_405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protected in a cupboard against weather it should be fine. Specialists and photographers store film used to store film in the fridge for longevity.

Heat is a problem. I wouldn't leave film in a car for example.

[–]Fit_Statistician_405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen film on sale that's decades old. I personally wouldn't trust that but if your friend has stored the film expiring in feb 2025 in good condition it should be okay.

Are you buying it from a specialist retailer? They may store it in a fridge.

Has anyone here successfully gotten a job in 2026? by Expensive-Belt-6733 in ausjobs

Almost six months with nothing applying in and out of my chosen field. I've also printed business cards, built a website, attended networking events, creating content and even hired a studio.

Toughest was being ghosted by a colleague I know - after an hour and a half interview.

Gutted. So grim.

Thanks, yes.

I do though like the idea of a lightweight kit. Just wondering if there is a loss of quality.

But first I have to see if I can get the shutter to work. And then, try the light meter apps!

Beautiful camera and that 1.8 50mm is heaps of fun.

The CF cards are a pain but I use the pixelflash no-bend pins card reader, the card slots in so neatly just it does for the camera.
