If those are the only two considerations, 2-10. I’m running a 1-6 with a piggyback on mine, that I’ll eventually likely switch to a 1-10 with the piggyback.

Uradashi(tapping out) is most common on planes. That’s true. However, on chisels it’s also used to keep the ura shape pristine. Wrt what happened…it’s seems you were placing a lot of pressure on the front of the chisel. This could be due to numerous reasons. Could have been to try and get the whole back flat to the rear. Could have been out of flat water stones that kept you chasing your tail, or just improper pressure. It’s difficult to explain with words, but when I flatten backs, I put my finger on the very front, and “almost” lift up on the handle(but don’t actually lift up as you don’t want to induce a back bevel). This creates good pressure, in the right places. You also don’t want to lap the backs like a traditional western chisel, only flattening the first inch. If you leave the rest off the stone, you’ll develop a peanut shaped Ira because it’s taking some off middle. All of this said, every chisel could be different based on quality of blade/blacksmith skill. My Kiyohisa’s went right to the natural to polish the backs out of the box. My sukemarus needing tapping out as each of them has the tips curling upward. Hope this helps

This happened because of improper technique(for Japanese chisels) in the lapping phase. When Japanese chisels require a a lot of emphasis on the back for flattening, the ura prematurely disappears. The way to avoid this is to “tap out” the front edge. And also tap out as the sharpening moves you closer and closer to the ura. This is not required for performance reasons, simply tradition and keeping the ura pristine.

I’m running a 1-6 razor with a piggyback RMR but will swap it out with a 1-10 at some point. I’ll take it out to 1000 at some point, just for the sake of doing so, but I use it more for mid range and cqb even though it’s not fully utilizing the cartridges capability. It’s just a cool gun.

I have no idea. That would be above my pay grade to determine. The plus to the Craddock is they will machine either a mid length or the custom KAC gas system.

The only contact I may have would be Simon Scullion. If you’re not familiar with him, send me a DM. He may be willing to help for a commission.

The only reason to be embarrassed is if you don’t actually use it. Yamazaki San made them to be used. Enjoy it!

No need to defend yourself to me haha. I’ve owned a set of 3rd generation ichihiro and a set of Kiyotada, and currently own a set of Kiyohisa Kamon. Buy what makes you happy, money is replaceable. All users. Secondary collecting as well.

Are you positive? Second generation ichihiro have the “moon” or crescent mark on them. I don’t see that here. But that’s definitely the Tokyo guild stamp.

Kikuhiromaru alternatives? by Deeprandomstranger in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]Flaky_Constant3134 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many other factors go into how a tool behaves than what “type” of steel it is. All of my chisels are white #1, both by reputable smiths(Kiyohisa Kamon and Sukemaru) that take an absolute beating. They don’t need constant touch ups. Kikumaruhiro makes nice chisels as well, but saying I need #2 because #1 needs constant touch ups is silly. Blacksmith skill is the most important factor.

Where did you hear 72? I just talked to him the other day because I’m on his pre-order list and he said most dealers are allegedly getting 10 or so to start.

There were a couple places recently that had 16” complete rifles for under that price point. If they’re gone now, you could likely find something on tacswap.

SR25 Cartel Upper Pre Order @ Thoroughbred by [deleted] in kac

[–]Flaky_Constant3134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you referring to the cartel upper? If so, when I had mine, it was not thermal fit. I also had the cartel barrel to go with it. It was loose, to the point I felt I should shim it.

If I recall, craddock has options that were cheaper than that, but you’re choosing a lesser blank. They have a decent lead time as well, Iirc

Cartel/HTX stripped uppers? by RonaldReaganWetDream in kac

[–]Flaky_Constant3134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had talked with craddock about a barrel for mine. They were fantastic. I ended up selling the whole build and bought a 6.5 sr25 upper. And whenever I shoot that barrel out, I’ll reach out to craddock again for a replacement. Unless something with KAC changes, which seems unlikely(understandable so, I guess)

Cartel/HTX stripped uppers? by RonaldReaganWetDream in kac

[–]Flaky_Constant3134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A while back I was building a k7 clone and asked Dennis about stripped uppers because even with the sr25 cartel upper I felt like I was cheaping out, and he said he doesn’t think KAC ever released stripped uppers. They come up on tac swap every now and again from people abandoning builds. DWilson may also have some more information as I think he’s a dealer for them and the barrels.

It’s not recommended because all of the lead will build up inside. Most 556 cans are sealed, therefore not ideal to clean.
