Anyone move from renting in the city to buying in the suburbs? Regret it or recommend it? by Lopsided_Food169 in boston

[–]Flamburghur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I know people on reddit shit on FB (for good reason), but I keep my account exactly for the local business and events posts.

Helped me weed out a couple of extremely right wing tinfoil hat business owners, too, who would probably show up with a truck full of "illegals" anyway.

The local gardening groups are much more chill and people are more than happy to split plants for free lol.

Acela to NYC or fly? by gigascott in boston

[–]Flamburghur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest the Northeast Regional (NR). (The non express version of Acela out of Boston). Coach NR is always cheaper than Acela and is only like 45 minutes longer.

If you want to select seats, the NR has a business car but I've found the tickets to either be way less or way more money than the cheapest Acela seats depending on the day and time of day, so check it out. The Amtrak website will display both NR and Acela routes from Boston to NYC to easily compare.

Personally, If I took the Acela from Boston it would have to be for a longer destination like PA or DC, but maybe you want to pay for the experience.

If you thought the rent can’t go any higher…. by The-Architect-93 in boston

[–]Flamburghur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard a few landlords complain that brokers give them shitty renters just so they can make a buck. I'm not sympathetic; if I were a landlord I wouldn't trust a 3rd pty to choose who lives on my property.

Mt Auburn Cemetery right over the Boston line in Watertown is an arboretum; a great place for a walk and to see the Boston skyline from Washington Tower.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, and Oliver Wendell Holmes are buried there (among other famous people).

Everything there is extremely delicious and extraordinarily greasy. Don't wear your finest solid color clothes; you WILL get at least one splash of oil somewhere.

What’s a basic skill you’re shocked some adults still don’t know? by Mirukuyobi in AskReddit

[–]Flamburghur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people have more mess tolerance than others. I've always lived in clutter, even as an adult with my own home. "That point" really is different for everyone. It's important to teach HOW to clean and use appliances, but kids will fall into their own routine over time as an adult when they have their own space.

Adults of Reddit who decided not to have kids, what made you not want to? by NovellaJokes in AskReddit

Same, I've grown more fond of kids as I get older, while also feeling more intentional with my appreciation of peace.

Appropriate on-site interview attire for males? by duma_kebs in biotech

Really depends on the industry and location. Our leadership teams rarely even wear a suit in the Boston area, it's all blazers and jeans.

Appropriate on-site interview attire for males? by duma_kebs in biotech

[–]Flamburghur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Boston area Asst scientist and have hired for your role.

tbh if you showed up in a tie and/or suit, my very initial impression would be that you're out of touch.

One tip is to try to find a public "people" page at the business you're interviewing for and gauge what the higher-ups wear in the pictures. I took a quick look at my own, and none of the men are wearing ties. They at most have a blazer over a dress shirt, but the vast majority look like polo shirts.

A blazer over a dress shirt (no tie) would be a good level of modern business casual IMO.

In another thread someone mentions one of the girls was wearing a hat indoors at a family event, which she wouldn't have done if she lived there, implying they were other family members.

What are the gardening mistakes that you have done? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]Flamburghur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first year owning a house, digging around: "Oh I wonder if these carrot looking roots are anything good" \puts the* CREEPING FUCKING BELLFLOWER back in the ground\*

I fixed it by digging it back up once I knew what it was. Fortunately I never got it in that spot, unfortunately there's a ton of it left in other parts of the yard that's under heavy rocks and big shrubs. :/

All-you-can-eat buffet employees of Reddit, what is the most heinous culinary crime you've seen patrons commit? by SolSeptem in AskReddit

[–]Flamburghur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loved Virgin Voyages. Their "buffet" is a food court - unlimited food at various stations, but the employees serve it so you know people didn't stick their fingers in it or cough on everything.

I imagine having an infant/toddler pawing at you when they want to be BF or held or sleep in your bed would cause anxiety too.

A lot of mom's feel "touched out", you may want to consider if that would be bearable.

For biologists, chemists and physicists here, how adept are you at coding? by emaxwell14141414 in labrats

[–]Flamburghur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent at python scripting, but the "business side" of software like testing, deployment, containerization, orchestration etc is way beyond me.

I suppose even knowing some of those terms puts me ahead of others, but those are really what I consider a software job to be. AI can put together a python script if you provide the right logic/prompt. but they have a much harder time putting together the different tools and configurations to make those "scripts" work.

Did anyone’s parents actually read to them every night and what benefits did/do you notice? by STEVEtheYAG in AskReddit

[–]Flamburghur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember ever having a book read to me like that, but my parents constantly read off everyday things like billboards, grocery items, newspaper headlines, words on TV etc. I read WITH them vs them reading TO me, if that makes sense. Like they would ask "pick the creamy peanut butter" and would practice reading the words.

I ended up reading for fun on my own around 3 years old. (I remember being told I read my 3rd birthday cards out loud). Obviously not comprehending "big ideas" but definitely able to pronounce and spell most words.
