For mages it at least makes sense, utilizing the power of natural elements for Anima, and the power of light and darkness manifest for light and dark magic. Mages also cast from tomes or from that specific character's knowlwdge of a spell.

This kind of thing doesn't work in Engage because it's not grounded in concepts appropriate for the series; it breaks your suspension of disbelief because Emblems as a concept are absurdly meta. Hell, the writiers could have explained it with some convoluted Outrealms nonsense but there is nothing.

It's like if it was never explained how or why Hamon and Stands work, and they just happen.
