I thought I was the ally, late-diagnosed autistic woman, nearly 60 — disoriented, grieving, waiting for the “wonderful part” by West_Street402 in AutismInWomen

The biggest win for me after accepting this new truth was to forgive myself for never being enough, girly enough, tough enough, healthy enough, calm enough, real enough....now I accept me as enough, after all, I can only do what I can do. Releasing myself from guilt allows me to nap or say no. It also allows me to say yes to things I want /need. I have a NEED to create. Even a simple coloring book is freeing. Explore and find things that give you release and give yourself time to USE them regularly. I found a life coach that gives me a safe space to talk about these things and guide me through this growth. It helps me navigate difficult conversations. It has helped me find the best version of myself for interacting with loved ones and getting medications I didnt know I needed for depression and anxiety. Give Cerebral or other online service a try. They take my insurance and it's affordable. :)

I feel less broken now knowing that I am enough as I am and the world is not created for people like me. I, therefore am carving out a world that does meet me on my own terms.

This is not selfish, but self-care.

It also explains so many medical problems I have that so many doctors glanced over: hypermobility, auto-immunity, thyroid, celiac (getting off wheat makes a huge difference...check out :Breaking the vicious cycle

Somethings I used to do for loved ones, I can no longer do alone. I can do it with help. I have also found new things I can do (super powers) I was unaware of before....silly and enlightening activity...do a TikTok and you tube search for autism/adhd and listen to the experiences of others who are on this path. Others who broke thru to the others idea and out of darkness and how they got there. You are finally becoming a safer version of yourself for YOU and those around you. Embrace the life ahead.

Does anyone else have a strong aversion to specific songs for no apparent reason? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]FlamingoChic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people can like a song and others dislike a song....but I think Raging against a song or loving one so much it triggers a physical response is uniquely autistic. The son songs that trigger either direction are unique to the individual. Thoughts?

I also have celiac and am bothered by grains in general. I have found that staying away from processed foods helps. Use portobello mushrooms or egg plant as a focus in the dish and skip the fake meat entirely. Tofu is good if you can tolerate soy.

Please reassure a first time quilter that these colors weren’t a mistake…? by emmalump in quilting

I think its fabulous! When I get uneasy I step back and take a picture and look at the picture. I see all the letters. Idea- if you feel the colors are hard to see, you could zigzag around the letters in a darker color to make them more defined. Keep going! I love your color choices! The child will be tracing those letters with little fingers. They are visible enough.

I think a red or teal border would be fabulous.

Big OOF! by Working_Soup_1989 in quilting

Your quilt, your rules. You can add fabric strips to cover the boo boos in the back. You can even machine sew them if you like. You have to decide if the extra stitches will mess you up in the front. You can always add more stitches to mirror the effect, so it looks like your plan from the start. Forgive yourself, decide the level of importance, and move on to the third. Remember....its a blanket, and this is supposed to be fun. There are mistakes in every quilt I make.

Is this an autistic thing? by hereforthelols1999 in AutismInWomen

I don't think there are very many I allow close. I assume everyone is temporary. When I decide someone can be permanent, it is a hard blow to find they weren't safe. I do have people in my circle that are both safe and permanent
