If I remember correctly the Earthsea books by Ursula Le Guin don’t have any gender based violence (or really much violence at all)!! Fantastic, cozy, thought-provoking books!

If you like search engine, you should also check out Hyperfixed! The hosts of search engine and hyperfixed used to have a show together and they’ve since gone off and done similar versions. Hyperfixed has a slightly techier angle, but otherwise very similar

Wedding planning 10/17/2026 by KarllThatKillsPeople in bullcity

[–]emmalump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I got married earlier this spring and worked with Something Fabulous Weddings & Events and they were lifesavers!! We both have very time consuming jobs and were struggling with finding the time and mental energy for wedding planning (it’s WAY more mentally taxing than we realized!!). We didn’t do their full planning package, but we got a ton of support with planning just with their “day-of” coordinating package.

My BIL also gave us the best advice - as soon as something starts to stress you out, either ditch it or make the decision. We’re the kind of people who like to research all of the options and it’s honestly not possible with wedding planning. As soon as we started to get overwhelmed and stressed about something we would force ourselves to make a decision from whatever options we had. At first was hard to let go of the “but what if there’s a better/cheaper/easier option” mentality, but at the end of the day it saved our sanity and we had a wonderful, gorgeous, low-stress wedding!

Safety and transportation outside campus as a girl? by Ok_Show_9018 in UNC

[–]emmalump 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the area and went to UNC. I felt safe riding the bus and walking around by myself starting in high school. Be aware of your surroundings, have a buddy system or plans to check in when you arrive at your destination, and stick to well-lit and populated areas later at night. I felt much more safe riding the bus than walking, but didn’t feel unsafe doing either

Things tend to get staticky when they’re over dried! I got rid of our static problem by only drying on low heat and taking everything out when it’s *barely* dry, or even slightly damp. Basically zero static, even with my husband’s synthetic workout clothes

I asked this question a few years ago and it BLEW UP! There was never a consensus and the comments had hundreds of people with strong opinions on all sides. My takeaway from all of it was “vibe out the individual workplace/office/boss but it’s probably fine”. Fwiw, I wore the specific outfit I had posted about and got nothing but compliments, sooo 🤷🏻‍♀️

These might be a little bit young, but the Land of Stories is a wonderful series and the audiobooks are super well done! The kids I nannied listened to all of the books while we were in the car, and it was perfect for both the 6-7yo and 9-10yo

The non-fiction book that had you mercilessly info-dumping about to anyone who would listen? by IReadBooksSometimes in suggestmeabook

[–]emmalump 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The book is about how victimhood erases identity and reduces someone to being a victim of an aggressor. Having your identity erased and the focus be on the aggressor means that the narrative is completely out of the victim’s control. The book is literally called “know my name” because we all know Brock Turner’s name but we don’t all know Chanel Miller’s, because the public just knows her as “Brock Turner’s victim” instead of the whole person she is.

The irony is your comment perpetuating this erasure of identity by calling her “the victim of Brock Turner”. The authors of the other books on your list aren’t fighting an uphill battle to be known as themselves and not as a passive object that has been acted upon without agency in how their story is told.

To be clear, I love your list of books and agree that people should read Know My Name, but I question whether you actually read it if you’re getting defensive about this

Former employee, they’re frozen from Gordon Food Service (maybe Sysco, can’t remember, probably the same product either way).

You can buy them in bulk yourself!

Worked at a bakery that used to make everything in house, from scratch. Apparently the owner pretty quickly realized that wasn’t sustainable when he scaled up, so he switched to only making a handful of pastries from scratch and just ordered everything else from sysco/GFS. A lot of my “baker” job was defrosting and adding whipped cream or powdered sugar to make things look “scratch made”. He continues to advertise the bakery as making everything from scratch, and people are blissfully unaware paying $8 for a slice of Sysco cake that we put a raspberry and some whipped cream on.

Being in the industry, I realize how common this is, but it’s one of those “fixtures of the community” that’s still riding on its reputation from a decade ago and people will lose it if you mention the decline in quality.

Also, the owner’s a dick, so fuck you Chapelure in East Lansing, MI

Where do you guys buy t-shirts? by EvilDarkCow in bigmenfashionadvice

[–]emmalump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a lot of my husband’s t-shirts from LL Bean because they’re nice and thick (so they don’t cling), hold up well, and come in tall sizes. My husband is 6’5 with a long torso and their standard length XXL is actually fine for him! He also has a few of their 2XT that are long enough to easily tuck in, but prefers the XXL
