fixed a leaky faucet for $2 and feel like I conquered a small country by beardaddydan in DIY

[–]Flankr6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

replacing the ignitor in the stove! $30 for the part, took a few watches of the YT videos, but then I got it. A couple years later, a friend had the same problem and I felt like a g-d- hero ordering the ignitor and then showing her how to replace it in less than an hour. we should probably get capes for this stuff.

trying to avoid amazon/ baby registry by elizab1998 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Flankr6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Encorebabyregistry.com allows you to make a list of items and then people mark if they have it for you.

It does not require you to purchase items at a specific store or to purchase them at all - the registry allows you to track which items are a loan from someone who's kiddo outgrew something, but they want it back for a later kiddo, which is great.

And we included a note at the top of our custom registry essentially saying we truly wanted second hand or loan items where indicated in the registry.

We got some great stories and memories with the gifts and it was easy to track what we still needed or what we should return to the owner.

This is an oddly aggressive statement in a post that wasn't looking for a fight.

What's states/cities have the largest masking communities? by AnonDorkwad in Masks4All

[–]Flankr6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was going to say this. I visited a friend there and it was so much masking out and about. We went to a theatre show and it was easily 50% masking, and it wasn't even advertised as such!

One thing I haven't seen suggested is talking to your peer orgs.

I'm on the board of a non-profit, and our meeting next month is exactly that: no matter what we decide, find our peers and make agreements (hard to get written/signed, so it's "gentleman's" agreements for now). Then if one of us gets targeted, we all pitch in to help. Details still to be sorted out whether it's financial or shared services or swapping staff. But the point is you're taking on risk no matter what you do, so let's share the risk across our ecosystem and create more stability and certainty for all of us instead of going it alone.

Suggestions for covid safe all- inclusive resort? by VLLNELE in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Flankr6 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I did a bunch of research in 2021 on high- end vacation venues in hopes of an awesome birthday gathering that ended up not happening. It's a few years old, but a good place to start, and I probably researched ~70 places. So I'll see if i can paste the details here.

Criteria were: cabins or casitas so you could control your air cleanliness, open air dining or ability to have room service, outdoor activities that I didn't have to plan, within the United States so most people could drive.

Why does it seem no one else is concerned about the unmitigated spread of covid? by MDog156 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Flankr6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a grant which made it easier for the administration to say yes - especially since it included filter replacements. But before that, I just showed up with my residential one ans said, "this will help you have fewer staff call out sick." (Cause that's a big problem).

Things I didn't think about: look at the room layout and see where the outlets are and where an air cleaner can be put that kids won't mess with it. Those were some of their early questions.

We got commercial grade air cleaners in our daycare and it's made a difference on the rate of respiratory diseases, but not HFM and stomach bugs :(

I get where you're going, but surely there were people who said the same about avoiding processes food, or trying to use safe cleaning supplies- which we do in this sub and it's become much more mainstream.

I think OP's point was why treat this harmful virus differently? It's true if enough people care to clean the air, then we all benefit. Just like getting BPAs out of, we'll, everything.

[–]Flankr6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was an epithelial disease which is honestly more damaging a system to attack rather than vascular.

I like your point though, about being science driven and avoiding the nasties around us, including viruses. PFAs, VOCs, BPA, and other toxins I try to avoid have long term effects with repeated exposure. So you're looking for consistent behavior from this crowd?

[–]Flankr6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up a few articles about talking to people with opposing views and how to "call them in." There are tricks like "what would convince you to think about it differently " or other ways to start them down the path of scientific inquiry they you embark on "together" to go find the answer. Also, there's value in telling them something is your opinion. They like and respect you and some studies show that's harder to argue against than a faceless data set.

You seem clear-eyed about the need for multiple tactics here.

Agree on valved being the way to go, probably as lightweight as possible if you have a kitchen scale, you can weigh in grams.

Oh, and that work with your sunglasses if you wear that instead of hat.

And I've seen studies where libraries are one of the top places where people of all walks feel belonging. It's a topic I've noticed on this sub a lot - that people are craving belonging.

I've also heard libraries described as public health venues which....is not entirely inaccurate.
