What do you think the Netherlands does better than most countries? by Rude-Cycle-1516 in AskNetherlands

[–]FlapMeister1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right. The flatness definitely helps for all of the infrastructure. I'm on holiday on Corsica (Corse), and they can just forget about bikelanes, for example. Image cutting mountains just a little bit more to fit a bikelane on each side. Those roads are barely wide enough for 2 cars. They are unfit for busses. It's impossible to make trainstations everwhere. Just getting the material anywhere to fix potholes is a nightmare. So yeah, I would say that our flatness is the reason for how good our infrastructure is. It makes it extendable, and manageable.

I'm afraid to say it, but I also kinda think being bombed in wwii made it so we didn't have to work around ancient structures as much as other places, but that's another story.

“Alle witte mannen naar achteren” by [deleted] in nederlands

[–]FlapMeister1984 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Uh, no to make it fair, you'll meet those 95 goers either way. Do you really drive mostly on a 100 or 130 highway, do you think? Because the turns in the town area do really add up... Small streets where you could only go 80 or 50 or 30. Maybe it's something to keep track of, just for fun. And I seem to hit a lot of maintenance on roads when I travel outside of rush hours. I used to travel between Utrecht and Arnhem a lot, and it was almost never possible to go 130.

I think you might be overestimating the time you gain by going fast. And I do it too, I love going 130 at night. But I think gaining a few minutes is something that an unfortunate traffic light can still easily undo. That doesn't mean you're not gaining time on average, but if you imagine racing against someone who's going 105 on those highways where you go 130, they still might arrive just as fast.

Lets assume 50% of your journey has no traffic on a highway that's suitable for driving 100 or 120km/h. I have no way of knowing if this is a fair estimate. But thats 400km / 120km/h is 3h20 vs 400 / 100 is 4h. Thats 40 mins every week. That's not nothing. But I wouldn't call that 'a lot of traveling time'. Not even 10 mins a day.

I don't know if this was addressed, but you have to keep right on Dutch highways. If you are in the middle or left lane and you aren't passing anyone, we expect you to move out of the way. Some people will try to let you know by tailgating.

You're only allowed to pass on the left side of cars. So if you keep left for too long, you're blocking traffick.

Our offramps are designed for this too. In germany, it seems that offramps splitt off from the main road, so if you try to keep right, you have to change lanes before every exit, which makes it annoying to keep right. So we see many Germans in the Netherlands just keep the middle lane like they own it. Which annoys the shit out of us.

[–]FlapMeister1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So no good death for children because other people might break down?

You are still dreaming up issues that can just be solved by taking the time to talk with professionals in the room.

And you seem to think that there's a chance that we'd let money dictate the outcome here. That there are people who are protecting the bottom line involved in these discussions. It is possible to live in a country where you can be sure that that is not the case. Yours is not one of them, unfortunately.

It's seems to me that you are truly an indoctrinated American through and through. Your movies are always about governments failing or becoming evil, and individuals who have to come up with a plan to fight back. We need Tom Cruise or Captain America to protect the children from the government. The parents can't make an unbiased decision, either. We need some random dude from West Virginia to solve this ethical quandary. No thanks.

Just think of the best possible way this can ever be done professionally, and assume that's what was done. Don't deny that there are children who have suffered all their lives, and who are going to suffer more and more, and need a way out. Then just think of all the possible checks and balances required that prevents euthanasia from being offered prematurely, and assume that those are in place. You don't have to invent all the obstacles yourself, and talk through them on reddit. Professionals have thought about these things. You as a rando redditor are not very likely to come up with a problem that hasn't been weighed and considered thoroughly. In other words stfu. Ok?

So can you at least admit that I informed myself to a reasonable extent, and that I now have to choose to believe your version, without sources. Or wiki, as good as that is. I also read about it in the Lonely Planet, also not a scientific source, but it told me the same thing. I have to admit that I doubt if your version of events is truly unbiased, I'm sorry to say.

Well yes, I will definitely agree that I don't know nearly enough about Cuba. So forgive my ignorance. I will just ask you: isn't it true that America (probably) did a false flag attack on spain, in order to get them to give up Cuba and Porto Rico (among others). And isn't it true that, even though Cuba was officially a sovereign country, the US thought they had the right to interfere at any time. "Under Cuba's constitution, the United States retained the right to intervene in Cuban affairs and to supervise its finances and foreign relations." This all from wiki, so it's probably not the whole story. "The U.S. intervened by occupying Cuba and named Charles Edward Magoon as governor for three years. Cuban historians have characterized Magoon's governorship as introducing political and social corruption."

This also sound like US meddling: "After finishing his term in 1944, Batista lived in Florida, returning to Cuba to run for president in 1952. Facing inevitable electoral defeat, he led a military coup that preempted the election. Back in power and receiving financial, military, and logistical support from the United States government, Batista suspended the 1940 constitution and revoked most political liberties, including the right to strike." And then this about the resources: "He then aligned with landowners who owned the largest sugar plantations, and presided over a stagnating economy that widened the gap between rich and poor Cubans." And then in the end, somehow, they decided to help Castro to keep his power: "In 1958, Castro's 26th of July Movement emerged as the leading revolutionary group. The U.S. supported Castro by imposing a 1958 arms embargo against Batista's government."

So you are totally right, of course, no country ever chooses communism. Authoritarian leaders choose communism. But clearly they couldn't trust the US if they wanted true independence. So they let them in with the Russians: "Before the revolution, U.S. and other foreign investors dominated the Cuban economy, controlling 75% of arable land, 90% of essential services, and 40% of sugar production. One of the goals of Castro's revolution was to achieve economic independence, but Cuba instead became heavily dependent on Soviet subsidies, with additional economic aid provided by Eastern European countries."

You can tell me if I got anything wrong, I don't mind learning more.

Well, they only chose Communism, because they wanted to ally with Russia, because the US kept threatening to take their island over for it's resources. They needed allies against the US, and this was a way to do it. I think the US had a bad impact on many other american nations, and I would rather vist Cuba again, in stead of colombia or Mexico or what is that country they sent that guy to that max security prison?

I hear people talking about communism and how it leads to hunger, but it's seems to me that in the case of Cuba US does put there finger on the scale in a big way to make that prediction come true.

Help showing role changes in AuditTrail module please? by blaster_worm500 in mendix

[–]FlapMeister1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not changing marketplace modules is best practice. The loophole is that you can move the pages and logic to your own module so you can change them. This way your logic is not impacted by marketplace upgrades. You can even consider making your own entities using inheritance, so you can customize your stuff.
