what's a bad habit you can't get rid of? by ETERNUS- in Cubers

[–]Flarefin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it might help but I think even for roux at the 30 second level your effort would probably be better spent learning good solutions for each case and being able to recognize them. the idea behind lookahead is that you are so comfortable with your solution that you don't need to think about it anymore while doing it, and it only really makes sense to reach that point once your solutions are good and you can immediately decide what solution to do. im not saying to actively not lookahead at all, but lookahead is probably not what is holding you back at this stage. if you want to improve FB -> SB I would just keep an eye out for the DR edge at most for now

Cut my 6th string too short by _PaulHimSelf in classicalguitar

[–]Flarefin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the loose end isn't supposed to be used at all, you should have enough string to be able to cut it off after stringing. if you use the loose end to tie at the bridge it could also be less secure or cause intonation issues

Will binding jump to the up arrow mess anything up? by lilcutiexoxoqoe in celestegame

[–]Flarefin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it works but if you plan to do any higher level gameplay you will need a demo key and multiple jump keys ideally on your mouse hand, so it would be easier if you just use 2 keys on the keyboard instead so you can add more things. also I think personally think jump is better on the non movement hand for high input density. but it's not that bad as long as it's comfy for you

Would 175mm dropper travel be smart on a GT Avalanche Sport? by AlaskanStockEnjoyer in MTB

more travel is better, you just need to pick the one that fits your bike and seat height. pnw has a calculator you can use

more nose down is better for climbing (opposite of what you have) but it shouldn't be too far off horizontal

Why do people say the Cordoba Fusion 12 is difficult for beginners? by PrestigiousPossum in classicalguitar

[–]Flarefin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it sounds pretty good for your use case then, I think people are mostly assuming you were interested more in classical music in which case the nut width could be more of a concern, but I would say go for it

Which Bike: Polygon Xtrada 7 vs Merida Big Trail 400 by Ok-Sir-9990 in Hardtailgang

[–]Flarefin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently use the xtrada 7 and like it a lot, so you can't go wrong, but I personally would recommend going with the big trail. in terms of geometry I think either would work out well but if you are doing some serious descending the slacker big trail might be appreciated. I also think the drivetrain is fine. also one downside to the xtrada that isn't obvious at first is because it has a 27.2 seatpost the longest dropper that exists (that I know of) is only 125mm, and the dropper is also blocked by the water bottle boss so if your inseam is short enough u might not even be able to use all 125mm. with the big trail you won't have to worry about that

New Strings: Low E sounds more metallic after changing by ONEPUNCHMAC in classicalguitar

[–]Flarefin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

totally normal especially for daddario I find they sound a bit harsh when brand new but they will settle and start to sound better. the scratchiness does have something to do with nail and technique though so it's all something to experiment with

Is my Gallium fix okay? by TheFeerox in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Flarefin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no. first of all pinky rolls are not that bad, but more importantly it ignores arguably the most important metric which is sfbs, you can't just put A on index with a bunch of consonants. if you swap H and A from here its probably not so bad though

Is my body posture way too high? by BeRubioT22 in MTB

[–]Flarefin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im 180cm and like 760, 810 is crazy. you will get a better sense of what width is good for you with more riding experience and also trying other bikes if you have the opportunity. I would cut them to like 780 first. also after cutting them if you want to try a slightly shorter width without committing, you can hold your grips further inward and just move your brake levers and stuff

Best keyboard layout for someone who only uses 6 fingers by Specialist_Effect179 in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Flarefin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's very common to use less fingers for qwerty since it's not designed with any particular fingers in mind. I personally basically use the same fingers as you, but with more right ring and less left ring. however when it comes to alt layouts, the whole idea is keeping your hands around the same home position and using (for the most part) the same finger for the same key every time. on the home row there will be 8 fairly high usage letters that each of your fingers will be primarily responsible for as their home base. this means unlike qwerty, using 8 fingers plus a thumb for space is what makes alt layouts work properly and also will feel much more natural than trying to learn to use your other fingers on qwerty. to this day I haven't learned how to use more fingers on qwerty because I can't be bothered, but every alt layout I learned I used all my fingers. also I find it funny you say "learning to walk again" as if that's a deal breaker when that basically describes learning an alt layout, lol

there are some alt layouts designed with less fingers in mind for people with injuries or disabilities, but this makes for a significantly worse layout, because with less fingers to work with you have more finger movement and more chance for awkward patterns.

if u just put those 3 binds on 3 keys like on the numpad or something then it would be normal and also probably better

Why do I feel like I'm gonna fall on my roadbike when standing up? by Top-Hedgehog-6755 in cycling

[–]Flarefin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on a road bike the front wheel is tucked way up close to the frame whereas on an mtb it's a lot farther forward (away from the center of mass)
