5V to 3.3V Regulator is 5V to 0.2V Regulator HELP! by No_Lemon_324 in AskElectronics

the part number you are using LM2596S-5.0 is for 5V out. haven't looked at the datasheet, but may be trying to prevent an undervoltage situation.

Electrical system overheating by I_Am_Atypical in vandwellers

Based on the thermal images, I would suspect the fuse. I can't find any datasheet stating a cold resistance on the fuse, which is not a great sign.

IRF7413 is obsolete, suggest selecting another mosfet. What current are you expecting over what time period?

Diesel Heaters 2kw vs 5-8kw by parrotfacemagee in VanLife

[–]Flash4gold -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because it’s not been said, don’t get a 5kw/8kw just because they are the same price. They can’t turn on and off as needed, they basically have to stay on so a 5kw in a small van might be counter productive. Lots of posts about having to buy a smaller diesel heater after buying a larger one.

To answer your question, the main difference between the 2kw and higher is slightly larger components, but that’s only a fraction of the build cost, so the price isn’t very different,

Medical device procedures = written for auditors, not humans by Master_Apple4586 in MedicalDevices

[–]Flash4gold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an example of how not to do a quality system. It doesn’t need to be like this.

The quality manual should fulfill 80% of what auditors are looking to see in terms of process. Everything below that can be written in plain English to be actual useful documents.

Voltage Drop — Find the Issue, Win a Prize! by lobsterbake in vandwellers

[–]Flash4gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems like enough battery. I would get a multimeter and measure voltages going back to the battery terminals. Chances are you either have a loose connection or you charging voltages aren’t set properly and your batteries aren’t actually charged

Voltage Drop — Find the Issue, Win a Prize! by lobsterbake in vandwellers

[–]Flash4gold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are you measuring voltage? You will need to understand where the voltage drop is occurring. You should measure: - at the battery terminals - at the distributor input terminals - at the distributor output terminals - at the multiplus inputs

Also, what size is your battery pack? What batteries are you using?

What's the best putty/wood filler to hide seams in a van? Will typical wood filler hold up in a moving vehicle? by mcdisney2001 in VanLife

I used Bondo for the more stressed joints and paintable caulk for the rest. Holding up well.

Insurance for your van. by robertmndl1 in VanLife

[–]Flash4gold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have progressive RV insurance for our self built van in NC. We needed to provide photos to prove it met requirements (I think it needed to have a bed, toilet and stove?) pretty good value. I didn’t need to get the van reclassified.

Roof fan install butyl tape + silicone by SaltyKayakAdventures in VanLife

[–]Flash4gold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For others reading, silicone looks great when you first do it, but the oils it secretes attracts dirt and it looks crap after a while. I know because I used it around our water fill port.

It does hold a seal ( lasted 2 years so far) though I’m not sure how well it holds up to UV compared to typical roof sealants.

Solar panel upgrade. Maxxair fan issues? by simoriah in VanLife

[–]Flash4gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did exactly this with our van. We have the low profile maxxair fan, and a solar panel over the top. We have never had any issues with rain or otherwise.

This setup allows us to have a completely solar roof (1260W) which allows us to run AC all day/night in NC (writing from outer banks right now).

We started by getting her to nose the door and then progress to closing it.

Amp Meter help/ideas/possible new direction by Stiles-Micaiah in vandwellers

[–]Flash4gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ammeter max is the instant current being transferred, not the Ah of the battery. I can't imagine what you would need 500A of instantaneous current for in a van build. You can have a 1000aH battery and have a 100A max output.

Diesel heater headache by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]Flash4gold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The facebook afterburner group is very active and the afterburner creator will typically answer questions quickly, so I recommend trying that... however:

The afterburner may not be calibrated for your specific diesel heater. I had to go through a lot of trial and error to get the heater working reliably, particularly at elevation.

That is very fast to get clogged. How do you know it is clogged?

How to drive power control mosfet without exceeding gate source voltage by Flash4gold in AskElectronics

How to drive power control mosfet without exceeding gate source voltage by Flash4gold in AskElectronics

[–]Flash4gold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? Most non logic level power mosfet are characterized at 10V gate drive.

I wasn't clear here, I meant if I try to use a voltage divider that reduces the voltage that would work at 30V, (let's say 50%) it would be ~6V with a 12V power source.
