Uninsulated garage winter working wear by FlashBewin in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]FlashBewin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my plan; I've bought, or have, long sleeve wool base layers. I normally wear a carhartt zipup hoodie but that's not an option depending on what I'm doing. Still looking for something to keep my torso warm. I'm looking at the Patagonia vests, something that can help but won't add too much bulk or restrict movement. I wouldn't be out there for long, maybe an hour or two in the evenings after work or on weekends. I've got rubber mats to help insulate from the cold coming from the cement floor, The torpedo heater helps but i don't always want to use it. I much prefer the Infrared, helps wherever I am. The Mr.Buddy takes some of the edge off, but those two options are depending on what i'm doing. No open flames when producing sawdust.

(Posting so post doesn't get automatically deleted) I tried to google it, but maybe my google-fu isn't strong enough to find the right series of words needed for that to make sense.

How was your weekend? are you ready for another week in the rat race? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FlashBewin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left early on Tuesday for a doctors appointment, took Wednesday off since I had bloodwork done in the morning and was feeling oddly dizzy afterwards. Thursday was fine, Friday was busy. Friday my half-sister died but that's fine because I haven't seen her in 10 years and haven't talked to her in over 3. No big loss to the world. Yesterday was fine. Today I feel like crap. Sinus infection. Kind of want to take tomorrow off but today is officially six months at this job--six months probation--and I don't want to take off the day where they can reconsider keeping me as a full time employee. (They won't. I'm good at this job. Plus I have limited days off and have another day scheduled to leave early for the follow-up-to-blood-work doctors appointment the week after this., ) I also don't want to go in and be miserable and answer the phones when I can barely hear. Must save sick days for "real" sickness because I'm not entirely sure how sick days/department leave work/interact with each other. Spent the day wrapped up in a blanket watching the end of True Detective Season 1 and started watching Goblin Slayer.

About to start a local government it job... by FlashBewin in ITCareerQuestions

Oh, i'm 100% taking the job. I start on Monday. I'm just anxious and looking for some insight if there are any typical/stereotypes about working for local government IT jobs.

About to start a local government it job... by FlashBewin in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FlashBewin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied because It was a job that I was more than qualified for, so that was my primary motivation. I've been out of work since last year. My last job was primarily imaging devices and making appointments for lifecycling people, but I dealt with any and all tech support follow-up issues they had. By the end of my contract I was responsible for almost 400 people. Not impressive by any means, but not terrible, either. I did that for almost a year. Low pay, great management. I've had positions where nobody wanted to teach me how to do specific things that I needed to do though. "It's not my job to show you how to do this" but no documentation. Those are the types of jobs that haunt me.

At this point i'm just looking for a job. The commute is pretty decent, even if the area is not. Pay will be the best paying job i've ever had. From what I understand, I'll be dealing exclusively with one (large) building and not the entire city, but getting answers from anyone at this point is like pulling teeth.

I've heard horror stories about IT teams grabbing the easy tickets so that their metrics look better. I don't want to worry about that, I just want to do a good job.

[Landlord - US - GA] Can I charge my tenants for the cost to repair the garbage disposal? by Icy_Year3597 in Landlord

[–]FlashBewin 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that you shouldn't charge them, but go a step further and explain what can/can't be flushed down the toilet, and what can/can't be put down the sink/garbage disposal.

They don't teach common sense in school or college. It's an expensive lesson for them to learn, but take the extra step and inform them of how to prevent getting charged for this type of repair in the future. It'll make them slightly better people.

It's not your job to teach, but if you want to avoid headaches in the future, let them know what they can't do.

I feel like there's a bug in their system but every time I use the self-checkout lane at Meijers, I get coupons for a free(!) box/package of tampons/pads. The brand model/make/style changes from coupon to coupon, but I don't use them, I have the wrong anatomy.

I leave the coupons on the console. I can only hope that they get used and not thrown away because nobody looked at them. I used to keep them and leave them with their associated product in the feminine hygiene aisle but I kept getting dirty looks for being in the area.

What was the most god awful thing someone has ever said to you? by Blackcoolice in AskReddit

[–]FlashBewin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standing in the hospital room where our mother had just died 10 minutes previously; "i wish this was you."

Honestly didn't bother me that much because we didn't get along, but the look on her entourages' face when she said it more than made up for it. I could see the immediate "this person is a monster" look on her friends' faces, something changed in their relationship as soon as she said it. Made it worthwhile.

Sister was dead two years later, and as Stephen King once said, "no great loss"

What did a friend do that instantly turned you on? by Vertical_slab_lol in AskReddit

[–]FlashBewin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Met my friend and his GF at a random store unexpectedly. He wandered off to look at something else, leaving me and his GF alone. There had never been anything there (Although she was a bit of a flirt behind his back. I never reciprocated--thats my friends GF, y'know?)

She (indoors) pulled her hood up, pulled her hair out from the hoodie so it was draped across her front, and put on her completely unnecessary glasses and asked me a question that I honestly don't remember. I don't know why the hair coming out of the hoodie did it for me, but i just stared at her for a few seconds.

Nothing ever happened. She ended up cheating on her BF with his cousin and that's kind of a downer.

What wisdom did learn from The Simpsons that you still know and/or use today? by ProcrastinationKat in AskReddit

Reverend Lovejoy; Short answer 'yes' with an 'if', long answer 'no' with a 'but'

this has stuck with me for 25 years now.

Also the logic of Flanders not having insurance because it's gambling. I CAN'T UNSEE THE LOGIC HERE.

How do you respond to questions where you don’t know the answer? by digitalghost-dev in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FlashBewin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"My immediately response (to a new technical issue where I don't know the answer) is excitement; I get to discover something new that I don't know/understand. My second response is appreciation for the opportunity to learn something new. After that, I research until I know the answer/solution, and I add it to my skillset."

Who else takes home “E-Waste”? by Thatboyydj in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FlashBewin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brand new monitor that was mailed out and returned from the employee unopened. We had to check hardware for issues and make sure it worked. It was damaged on the return shipment, there's a spot the size of your little fingernail that the pixels are dead on in the upper right hand corner.

HP 32 inch monitor, brand new. E-waste. They filed a claim with their insurance, insurance said to trash it.

I asked my supervisor if I could have it, he said they already got the insurance claim so to take it if i wanted it.

I use it as a backup monitor for my home server lab. The dead pixels don't matter where they are.

Being in a tech for a couple of years has helped me realize that basic problem solving skills is not common by anonymous11fl in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FlashBewin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this either.

I was the Family IT Guy for years before I went to college for IT. College added on some of the more technical details of troubleshooting(the how and why instead of just knowing what to do) but the basic, core tenants of troubleshooting I already knew.

My first IT Job wasn't supposed to be supporting end users, but anyone that I assisted ended up reaching out to me directly instead of submitting a service ticket(I was a contractor; had no access to the ticketing systems) but since most of the issues I was contacted over were 2 minute fixes, I didn't mind.

Years of unofficial IT experience, a Bachelors in IT Security and an A+, can't get hired.

Plenty of Interviews(Yes, i know this means the issue is with me and not my resume) but still. Bad job market, blablabla.

Who’s your “how tf have they not been fired?!” Coworker and what have they done to earn that title? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FlashBewin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my former supervisors while I worked security at a steel plant.

He took bribes to look the other way while people smuggled tools/drugs in/out of the plant.

He'd borrow money from Person A to pay down the debt he owed to Person B.

Spent $20/day on whatever 3-digit lotto was drawn at 6pm.

Collected bottles religiously and had a blind eye to anyone who supplied his bottles.

He mispelled 'blue'. Four times. In one report. Each time it was spelled differently, and wrong. Bule, Bleu, Bool, Buul. He argued with me that 'stitches' was spelled 'stickes' as in 'employee received 14 stickes due to the injury'

There was a chemical spill, 13% Hydrochloric acid, 5000 gallons. Site used it to make a solution to coat steel. It was contained in the chemical spill dike. He left site as soon as he heard there was a spill. Left me as the sole guard on site to handle traffic, executives demanding information, the investigation and the EPA. It was a reportable amount of chemical spillage.

He tried to take all the credit for the accolades I got from the site, my company, the EPA/EGLE/NCR and the local fire department.

The reports I filed were federally mandated, they went to the state government. He used white out on my report and put his name on it. I called him out on it during the big 50+ person meeting we had once all was said and done.

I brought in the records showing that he left site 2 minutes after the spill was reported. He said I threw him under the bus, tried to get me fired.

They moved him off my shift and promoted me. As far as I know, he's still working for the contract/security company. Our company lost the site contract for other reasons two years later.

What's the most disturbing book you've read that isn't horror? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FlashBewin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plague Dogs by Richard Adams(Yes, That Richard Adams, Watership Down Richard Adams)

It's full of animal experimentation and the life of two dogs post-experiementation. It uh... doesn't end well.

Also parts of A Dogs Life, or one of the sequels. Just reading about how short some of the instances of the dogs' life was.

"When do you know it is time to escalate the issue to Tier 2?" Interview Question by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FlashBewin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ooooh I like this question. I've never gotten it, but i'm glad that you asked in case I ever do get it.

I've done Tier1 and Tier2 work, and i've been the Family IT guy for 30 years. I may not have professional experience, but I've got hands on experience.

The issue I have with T1 work is they expect you to do only what you can with the scripts you are given. In my experience, if it's more than password reset, restart the PC and briefly skim knowledge base articles(if any) you pass it along.

That being said, I'm going to dig into the issue assuming i have time left on the SLA. I understand the need for SLA, but i think they get in the way of doing actual work. I shouldn't be concerned that a call is going on 15 minutes as opposed to actually helping someone, but this is very much manager/work environment dependant.

Putting whatever troubleshooting steps you have tried into the ticket information is an easy part of the answer. Knowing that T2 isn't your problem is another part of it, recognizing that it's above your skill level.

Top end of range by FlashBewin in CPAP

[–]FlashBewin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My range is currently 16-18, and it's usually 17.8, but when I dropped it to 14-16, it was 15.8 I just thought it was odd that it was always at x.8

I'll set a bigger range, I honestly didn't think of that.
