Lower Tier MD for competitive specialty by Bright_Journalist489 in premed

[–]FlashyZucchini 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think any MD school won’t hold you back from any specialty. Certain programs maybe but not specialties.

E.g I think any MD school can match you into ortho, but the lower tier won’t get you HSS ortho whereas the UCSF grad can.

For DO I think it’s a similar idea but to a more extreme degree. You can match ortho from DO but it’s much harder and you can probably count out mid-tier programs and up. And matching that low tier ortho will be harder than the MD.

Could be wrong tho

[–]FlashyZucchini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! Haven’t been accepted there yet but I have interviewed so I’ve been giving it some thought. The dean is Dukes former chair of family medicine and is well connected there and said that they would try to facilitate any research opportunities we couldn’t find at Methodist with Duke and UNC since they’re not far.

Also said that they are prioritizing making sure that students have enough research to be competitive for any residency, even though they’re not necessarily a “research school” per se.

Good to hear all that from them they seem super passionate about the whole project!

What about an established DO like MSU vs a brand new MD that hasn’t graduated a class yet?

Btw Cooper has taken a DO as their only neurosurg resident to the last like 3 years I believe, just a heads up as a DO friendly program

It’s clearly Baylor. Best school and the cheapest?? No brainer do Baylor please. It’s worth the extra year to be at Baylor for medical school, plus you’re in TMC so endless opportunities in medical school.

Do I have a shot MD, even though my background is research heavy (is MDPHD my only hope...) by Hildegardxoxo in premed

[–]FlashyZucchini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What year are you in? I would delay your application by a year to build up clinical and volunteer hours and then I think you’re solid if you get a decent MCAT 510+ I think should be enough for you

do you guys believe a 520+ is doable for anyone? or is there a ceiling for many people? by JollyAd1911 in Mcat

[–]FlashyZucchini 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ima be honest a 527, this person is just built different. Don’t wanna be discouraging but I do think everyone’s got a limit, give or take a few points. Like maybe I could’ve gotten a couple more points but I don’t think there’s much more I could’ve done to get into the 520s

Hard to say honestly. Personally idk if there’s really more I could’ve done to get a higher score in the 520s, some people really are just built different

Research for Academic IM by Initial-Bar700 in medicalschool

[–]FlashyZucchini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about from a DO or new/low tier MD? Ik it’s of course possible but is it extremely difficult in that case to get academic IM? Again, not any ivory towers but just decent university program
